I felt like it went downhill more and more in the second half. At one point I didn't even care about anyone anymore, just wanted it to be over 🤣😭 We do have a happy ending for the leads and some of the other characters.

I read this a long time ago, but it's a happy ending in the novel, the ML is gone for 8 years I think, to get cured from the poison. During that time the FL is taking the role of the Empress and also raises their son

They start as enemies, then become friends with a very ride-or-die dynamic. The FL is sincere early on, but the ML betrays her trust (for solid reasons), then spends several episodes trying to win her back while she refuses to forgive easily—but he stays loyal throughout.
They’re not officially together yet as of episode 18, so I can’t judge the couple dynamic. So far it feels more balanced than NES —they both care about, protect, and support each other.
Not a perfect 50/50 though: the ML falls first and gradually gets more focused on her, while the FL is still on her own growth path, so their emotional pacing is different. Still, it doesn’t feel like he’s doing all the chasing - she genuinely cares about him, stands by him, and puts effort into their friendship.
I literally started this yesterday and somehow I'm already caught up. 😭 It's actually so good! The beginning had me raising an eyebrow because it was random as hell, but once it gets going? It gets going. I'm fully invested now. 😅 The episode cuts are definitely noticeable (RIP smooth transitions 💀), but honestly not enough to pull me out of the story. I'm seated, your honor. 👏

I honestly think it's just a generalized preference. Most of the target audience for romance dramas is on the younger side, and for some reason the "ML falls first, falls harder, and does 99% of the heavy lifting" formula has become the default. Probably because it's about as far from reality as you can get. 😂
Personally, I prefer a middle ground. I'm not a fan of an overly simping ML, but I also don't enjoy the cold, stoic guy who's basically a grunting statue for 95% of the drama. It all comes down to the writing. And I completely agree that a strong, independent FL and an affectionate, devoted one are not mutually exclusive—they can absolutely coexist if the writers put more thought into writing female characters as actual people.
What frustrated me the most with this drama, though, wasn't even the romance dynamic—it was the conflicts. Most of them barely made sense, and the way the leads handled them was equally baffling. Sure, they're 18 for about two-thirds of the story, but the constant misunderstandings and lack of trust made it hard for me to root for them.
The biggest example is the breakup. The FL leaves because the ML got stabbed protecting her and she's terrified he'll keep getting hurt. Fine. But instead of simply leaving, she tells him she never loved him. Then the ML just... believes her without really questioning what happened, yet spends the next 10 years unable to move on. That whole sequence was incredibly frustrating to watch.
At the end of the day, I watched it for the leads. They have fantastic chemistry, looked great together, and both gave really solid performances. I just wish the writing had matched their potential. And the Mango subtitles definitely didn't do the drama any favors either.
