As a CZY fan myself, thank you so much for complimenting him. However, even though I have been his fan for a long time, based on my own standards from growing up watching Western series, Hong Kong dramas, K-dramas, and now C-dramas, I still think he needs to improve his acting further if he truly wants to become a genuinely good actor rather than just a traffic star.
People often say that he is not suitable for costume dramas. Well, sometimes I can understand why, because his facial features may not fit the traditional costume-drama beauty standard, and he is not always very photogenic. However, since I have invested so much time in supporting him as an actor, I appreciate that he does not keep accepting the same type of role. He seems willing to step outside his comfort zone and challenge himself.
When he cut his hair short for a role in a suspense mini-drama and appeared with very little to almost no makeup in the reuters to make the character look more realistic, some Reddit users even created a thread just to insult his appearance. They posted photos calling him ugly and questioned why he was so popular. It felt like they were attacking an actor simply because he chose not to remain conventionally attractive on screen and was genuinely trying to improve his craft instead. 🥲
Just like you, one thing I dislike about C-ent is how hard they try to make actors and actresses look like perfect dolls by using excessive filters. Sometimes, actors cannot even make strong facial expressions because Chinese audiences may call them ugly. In my opinion, society has created this problem for itself by expecting actors to look like models in every scene instead of allowing them to actually act.
You know, whenever I scroll through Weibo, the most common compliments I see about dramas are things like, “The ML is handsome” or “The FL is beautiful” and that is it! They barely talk about the plot, the story or the acting. Sadly, I do not think Chinese entertainment will improve much if it continues prioritizing beauty over strong plots, good storytelling and real acting.

But why can’t the female lead be naive or make mistakes sometimes? No human being is perfect. What makes a good story is seeing her learn, grow and develop as a character.

The rating will probably fluctuate a lot at the beginning because of biased votes from both sides, fans giving it very high ratings and trolls or haters rating it extremely low. A more reliable rating will likely emerge later, toward the end of the drama.
Still, ratings shouldn’t determine whether someone likes or dislikes a show. Just enjoy watching it!
