Yes..that’s what I felt from the start too. To be fair, CZY still looks quite young and doesn’t have that very mature presence, Sometimes he honestly looks like he’s in his early 20s rather than almost 30 😅 so I can understand why some people felt that they didn’t visually match based on the reuters content alone, especially since WCR also looks more mature despite actually being younger than him while SML gives off a more mature appearance even though they’re both considered 95-line actors, so I think a lot of the early judgment was really based on appearance rather than their actual acting chemistry or how the characters would work together on screen.

I think that kind of mindset is one of the reasons the overall quality of the industry keeps going downhill, because popularity and short-term results end up becoming more important than good scripts, strong production, or an actor’s long-term development. It’s honestly quite unhealthy.
So at least I’m happy that many CZY fans, both Chinese and international, seem willing to support his choices even when the project isn’t a typical idol romance drama. I think that gives him more freedom to try different roles and build himself as an actor instead of being trapped in only one type of genre.

I’m 💯 with you. However, to survive in such a competitive entertainment industry, he probably still needs to take on romance dramas from time to time. Romance is still one of the most mainstream genres in China, and it’s quite rare for a drama with little or no romance to gain huge online popularity.
TV dramas seem to be a bit more varied, though. From what I’ve seen, dramas that perform better in TV ratings are often more serious dramas, family or slice-of-life stories. TV audiences don’t seem to care as much about online popularity or hype, while costume dramas generally don’t perform as strongly on television.
So I think the best strategy for surviving in this industry is to find a balance: take some romance dramas to maintain popularity and exposure, while also trying different genres to improve his acting skills and broaden his range.
For CZY, I actually think his choices have been pretty good if we judge them mainly by the characters he chooses. He doesn’t seem to stick to exactly the same type of role every time, and I like that he keeps trying different character settings instead of staying in one safe zone.
The bigger problem is that finding a genuinely good production team and a well-written script in C-ent, especially for romance dramas seems much harder. And because his agency is super weak, they don’t have strong connections with major capital or powerful production companies either. If it were another actor, I honestly think he might have been buried a long time ago under those circumstances, or ended up mostly taking supporting roles in more mainstream productions.

For CZY, I actually think his choices have been pretty good if we judge them mainly by the characters he chooses. He doesn’t seem to stick to exactly the same type of role every time, and I like that he keeps trying different character settings instead of staying in one safe zone.
The bigger problem is that finding a genuinely good production team and a well-written script in C-ent, especially for romance dramas seems much harder.
And because his agency is super weak, they don’t have strong connections with major capital or powerful production companies either. If it were another actor, I honestly think he might have been buried a long time ago under those circumstances, or ended up mostly taking supporting roles in more mainstream productions.
You can kind of see it from the agency itself too. Apart from CZY, there are barely any actors under them who are well-known enough to have a strong presence in the industry. So the fact that he has managed to build his career this far despite having such limited agency support proves how much he has had to rely on his own work, choices and ability to carry the opportunities he does get.
Honestly, if it were someone else, they might have left already because this agency doesn’t seem to provide much of what an artist really needs to survive and compete in this industry. Quite a few artists have left the agency over the years even those who weren’t as well-known as CZY.
But somehow, CZY is still there 😅 He really seems like the type who just keeps his head down, does his work and focuses on acting rather than constantly trying to manufacture attention for himself.
