Title When the Phone Rings Spoiler
I think it's also a function of the number of episodes the show was. This show would have benefited from having…
True. However, the screenwriter knew there were twelve episodes. If she didn't have time to develop the Argan plot then she should have changed the ending. I personally think that Baek Sa-eon and Hong Hee-joo should have left the country together. It would have been great to use In-a as the bridge between the two of them.

The complexity of Baek Sa Eon was never explored in the show, we never got to see what his inner feelings were.…
I think it's also a function of the number of episodes the show was. This show would have benefited from having 14 episodes in my opinion. 16 would have given the writer way too much time to drag out the story, but 14 would have allowed them to add more monologues and dialogues that explained Baek Sa Eon's motivations better. All in all though, I think YYS's acting made up for the lack of time spent exploring Baek Sa Eon.

This show is meant to be an entertaining, guilty pleasure. It doesn't pretend to be anything but a wattpad/booktok coded style plot. What makes it so good is that it is a very well acted guilty pleasure show. Moreover, the tension between the leads and the longing they have for each other is what makes this work. If you are looking for profound plot points then you likely won't find it here. The last episode could have been executed better but otherwise, it's a good show within its genre. It will take a long time before the K-drama world is able to replicate what Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin created with the very little material they were given.

In terms of acting, I think it will be a very long time before another actor can create a tsundere character like Yoo Yeon Seok's Baek Sa-eon. Even though Baek Sa-eon's traits are typical in many K-drama leads, I think Yoo Yeon Seok's interpretation of the archetype and his charisma made it feel very fresh.

when did the rating get this low??? I thought it was rated at like 8.5-8.8???? was it because of the mistranslation…
Mostly because of the mistranslation from Netflix. A lot of people didn't like the ending and thought it was poorly executed

Ok good for you and your self righteousness. People can't have a lapse in judgement and must be judged solely…
The proof that he has changed is that he has never repeated the comment he made then in the ten years since even though he does more not less unscripted interviews. Moreover, female staff and his female costars all seem to be comfortable around him and there have never been rumors about his behavior towards female staff or his costars. He also seems to have a good relationship with many of the well respected female writers and directors who are known to respect women. I am more inclined to put stock on that than one ill judged comment he made years ago that he hasn't repeated.

People are just f***ing stupid haters.
The comments on Yoo Yeon Seok's acting page are also something else. There are multiple comments calling him ugly and undeserving of being the male lead in a romantic drama. I guess millions of female fans around the world are wrong :). The arrogance and cruelty people demonstrate towards celebrities in general is really unsettling. They seem to think that a mistake or a bad comment or joke justifies an entire hate train and don't realize that their own behaviors often reflect badly on themselves not the celebrity.
On When the Phone Rings Feb 2, 2025
Even after the correction of the subtitles, some accounts on Twitter (mainly Turkish accounts) are still arguing that Netflix's original translation was right. This tells me that people simply were looking for a way to hate the series and actors etc. This isn't actually about the issue they claimed to care about.

Oh please, he isn't that good. Won't be watching his dramas. Don't need to support a misogynist.
Ok good for you and your self righteousness. People can't have a lapse in judgement and must be judged solely on something they said ten years ago that doesn't align with his behavior since.

He kinda ugly to star in a romance drama made for girl gaze.Ruined the experience
Plenty of female gazes around the world loved his face and his acting enough lol. It's so weird how people are hell bent on starting a hate train against him and insulting his looks for something he said ten years ago. If you think he's ugly, go look in a mirror.

pr trained him well
So you think the PR people trained him so well he hasn't exhibited his misogyny for 10 years despite having more non-scripted appearances than he did prior to the incident in question.

It must be true that misogyny makes you ugly. He looked so sweaty in his recent drama. I’m not sure if it was…
Lots of people disagreed with your assessment.

#BoycotWhenThePhoneRings Is trend on twitter šŸ˜«ā¤ļø
I mean it seems to be in line with the organized campaign to bombard every ratings site with bad reviews. Oh well lol. I don't care anymore. It's achieving precisely nothing.

Yes, the fact that the it's an agency interview and the question was that direct is suspicious. There was no way he could not deny that question and the agency's priority is to protect them both from the international storm any dating news would cause. I will keep my delulu buried in the depths of my heart. Wish them all the best.

Yeah. I guess I will just support their individual projects and see who they marry if they marry at all but those two have had done things that are feeding the delulu lmao.

Omg you are right lmao. I don't want to ship but these two make it really hard.
Edit: He did an interview with King Kong By Starship and outright denied the possibility of a relationship being possible between them. Wow. Why do I still believe in them?

Just avoid the comments for now if it's too much to handle.
YYS and CSB will be fine. They have gained legions of fans. Look forward to their next projects.

The actors will be fine. They have nearly doubled their instagram followers since the show began. People aren't unfollowing them. You have to know that most of the people rating it 1/10 created new accounts in the past few days and are spamming it to drive the ratings down. I am looking forward to seeing the progression of CSB and YYS's career after this hit. They will definitely be getting more scripts to choose from and I am happy for them.

See lol. That's the thing. The disappointment is muted. Most of the people who say they won't watch the show were never going to watch it and Netflix will still recommend it to viewers. I see Netflix recommend all their popular dramas to viewers all the time (CLOY, Hometown Cha Cha Cha, Hospital Playlist etc)

Netflix won't care because they will still recommend it. Why would MBC care? The issue is about a very loud and vocal minority who want to turn everything into a test about a very complex conflict. I was of the opinion yesterday that MBC should respond but I don't think they should anymore. There's clearly no changing minds and the thousands of reviews by people who haven't actually seen the show will still be there.
