I felt like it gave the character XWY a nice contrast. He was a ruthless and decisive general outside, but a gentleman and a novice in love. he gave her the “freedom to travel” like she wanted. she was doing errands for him, a really valid reason; she needed to find the minerals and ores needed to build the caltrop machine. and it was stated that he frequently visited too. In the olden days it’s quite normal for long distance relationships to be like that. They don’t have telephones and rapid transportation to meet up that often either. I agree this drama has some pacing issues that feels fast compared to other dramas and lots of context that are just briefly mentioned, the audience need to piece the information themselves instead of the usual “spoon feeding” that other popular dramas do. so it’s not for everyone. On the contrary, I feel like the lack of intimacy scenes elevates the drama to let the audience focus on grander themes. the “gruesome” scenes you mentioned are not gory anyways, so it is a very family friendly show that I feel I could watch together with my family and discuss many matters such as coming-of-age situations, personal growth, aspirations, puppy love vs mature love, politics, priorities in life, etc.

I feel like not everyone likes constant physical intimacy with their partner. some people like “acts of service”, being understood, given certain “freedom”. I think the tags are just too broad; i think they should’ve separated it to a spectrum of “spicy love” til “pure love” or something like that. I just felt like this drama became more elegant with the absence of spicy scenes. So yeah, to each their own really, this drama is not that type of drama, it explores much broader themes than just focusing on “romance”.
there’s only one forehead kiss. It’s very PG, it’s a great show to be watched together with family, full of political intrigue and grand themes with a fast pace, plenty of material to discuss and analyse. Features many characters’ including side characters’ personal growth arc. very fulfilling!
