the last arc was supposed to be a contrasting the flipside of world in Linji where Rong family operates as a matriarch. the rest of the world was still patriarchal and in the duke’s mansion was the toxic version of the patriarchal household where all suffered. even the crown prince and LJL were bound to the rules and norms and were helpless. at the end, the duke was forced to see the reality that nobody loved him.
at the end of the day, RSB gave him the freedom to stay or to choose her. she also had fears that LJL managed to quell. it’s written well and the last arc featured veteran actors. despite being a few episodes long, it was really packed with details.

i understand your sentiment.. i also feel so sorry for him, but i guess if i was in RSB’s shoes i would similarly be guarded against LJL. she knows she’s being biased, with him, she breaks all the rules and she rebels. she lets him indulge and pays special attention to him, gives him food, special medicine beautiful clothes. she even gave him an attendant!! hahaha.. she herself has inner turmoil of trying to avoid her emotions to run her life, she tries to convince herself that they’re not meant to be together, she takes into account for his interests as well (also as a watcher i only realised this after following xmy’s logic) that if he marries her, his career will not be able to take off. but LJL himself feels that rsb is the one who can make him feel at home after losing his mom, adoptive father, his benefactor and his teacher. she knows that LJL is smart and crafty, so she also tests him and her own feelings. after rewatching a couple of times and trying to understand both views, i appreciate this couple’s push and pull more!!! it’s very well written

he’s not stupid. he investigates well. but RSB has years of experience with Linji government officials and lots of spies and informants, so naturally she knows more. LJL just came. RSB prepared this plan well. there’s a lot of hidden details like there is actually two factions, the emperor and empress dowager. LJL is emperor’s favored, but he’s still relatively a new official. and he justtt came to Linji. RSB’s character is written to be slightly older than him. you can say that RSB is a better strategist but LJL is a great tactician. both are highly intelligent, and realistically, LJL deals with problems as they come.

i just realized something funny.
10 mins after the black campaign started the studio posted that it’s fake. hmh was doing photoshoots so they posted a video of him laughing about 42 mins later and captioned “the boss said it’s kind of funny”
