His voice was great after SM, but he definitely leapfrogged his vocal skills in the past couple of years!! SM training was only about 1.5 years long and it’s been 12 years from then. Since then, he’s been in the Beijing Arts academy, who knows he would’ve practiced with Shangwenjie (previous agency) even for a short while, and he definitely became more versatile ever since he practiced with GuoXiaoyu the past 5 years.
But what’s touching is that GuoXiaoyu said in the latest episode of TTV “You were never a crossover singer. You’ve always been the professional singer Hou Minghao”. Even with his vocal teacher advancing him, he’s always been a professional musician at heart!! He has so much love and passion for music and respects the stage so much he kept improving himself. He originally was already talented but a singer will only be able to survive if they can evolve with the times too! He’s so hardworking and dedicated, everyone can’t help but want him to succeed!! I wish great songs will come to him!

Then during his time at the dance competition variety show he did the same, he practiced so hard he was actually called out on stage for not having enough sleep the previous day.
He’s so humble, he mentioned in the dashing youth vs that “no one ever said he was good at dancing” but I’m sure it’s because his standards are so high he’s comparing himself to accomplished professional dancers.. although we know he’s actually at a level way past amateur level. He may not be the most flexible, the most fluid, nor strongest dancer, but his dancing skills are solid for an idol! And he performs with great reverence for the stage! He just needs the right choreographer and mentor. Hoping for a dance track single next!!!

His OSTs of "When We Were Young", his cover of Jimmy Lin's "17-year-old's rainy season", his cover of Aaron Kwok's "Dui ni ai bu wan", and then his "sui yue bu dai ren" in a CCTV program... He just needs a hit pop song!! I hope more pop song producers can notice him and invite him to collaborate!!

The setting of the drama is actually set so the characters are actually 16 and 24, then they have a 3 year jump and another 3 year skip. so they ended up being 22 and 30. details in the last episode showed white hair growing on the temples of the ML’s character; post cranial surgery. In terms of casting, they actually did well; since the FL was 16 and ML was 27 during filming; both are within the age range of the characters they’re portraying. The story does not have any problem with age gap at all. It’s just the actors’ real age, which I would (if I had a teen) tell her to distinguish between real life vs fictional setting. At the end of the day they are just professional actors at a professional setting; and reports show they have been very respectful with each other, and the then minor actress had her guardian and acting coach accompany them during the shoot. So liking this drama does not mean we endorse age gaps in real life. Hopefully it makes you feel better.

the grooming was done by the grand tutor, not by the ML. He had more of a “guiding lover” type of role, letting the FL figure things put by herself and grow up on her own terms. But yes, I believe that this drama does dwell in a lot of grey area that depicts the cruelty of war and troubled times. A lot of young people are too sheltered these days and may need to learn from even historical fictional works such as this one.
