You're right. Whenever they adapt a novel with a morally grey or unlikeable male lead, they usually whitewash…
100% agree with you! I think it's better for FLs to have some twisted and controversial sides to them rather than being overly kind, understanding, supportive, capable, and etc. At least it's more human-like than some ever-forgiving virtuous goddesses.
Should I go read the novel first to understand this story fully ? Is the adaptation is really worse as you say
I'm not sure... If you have time I recommend to read it. It was a cool story. 👏 Please enjoy the drama too. It may be a good show separate from the novel, if they changed the novel plot even more later in the drama. Let's see what comes in the next episodes
So far the drama shows it poorly... In my opinion, the novel is not about who is at fault and who is more justified to do cruel things. It's a story about two broken youths who met each other when at their lowest points of life. Still, they managed to fall in love with each other in their twisted ways, they loved and treated each other as much as they could at that time.
I actually like Zhou Wan from the novel. Yes, she did similar things towards ML but she's very complex character which earned my respect. Feel free to disagree with me. We all like what we like and have every right to dislike what we dislike.
I don't like this drama as adaptation of the novel. The novel is great but many significant parts are excluded in the drama. These parts are FL focused showing the drastic life she lived and in the novel her motives are not about money and not even revenge against bitch mother. It was helplessness and despair which blurred her mind when she made a choice to later regret it.
In this drama, they completely whitewashed ML while FL receives all the criticism because of these excluded parts of the novel which doesn't make it a coherent story for new viewers who didn't read the novel. It's actually some trend recently to whitewash ML and reducing FL pov in adaptations. I have noticed it in several dramas already. "Love in the clouds" crew did the same. They made ML a devastating victim of world's cruelty while showing FL as liar and traitor. He was shown as loyal protege and righteous warrior, and FL was shown just about her using him for personal gains. Completely different from the novel.
In my opinion, Zhou Wan is similar to Wen Yifan from First Frost drama. Family cruelty is on similar level. But the filming crew showed properly all the dark story behind FL youth time so when she abandoned ML (even if with better purpose) there was no criticism towards her. If someone knows the full story they will understand FL, while new viewers will only see negative sides of FL which I think seems intentional and unfair from producers. I don't like this trend...😕 I don't like such trend.
Lu jerk comes from very rich and prominent family. He used to date Jiang Yan's mom in college years, but Lu grandpa (ML grandpa) disapproved because he suspected she dated him only because of riches. Later, Lu father got to know ML's mom. She was from equally prominent family, business "perfect match". Lu grandpa insisted on this marriage since it was helpful for business, and he liked ML's mom as she was properly raised lady. Yet even when they got married Lu jerk continued meeting Jiang Yan's mom. Both women got pregnant several months apart only. Later when ML was a child she found out about this affair and demanded divorce but Lu jerk disagreed. He knew that this divorce would anger Lu grandpa and he couldn't lose his support since he's not confirmed heir of Lu conglomerate. (Even nowadays this jerk past 40 still needs to placate and humble before Lu grandpa since he's still not heir - hahahah, serves him right). That jerk even promised to abandon Jiang Yan and his mom, which astonished ML mom for such cruelty of abandoning even innocent child.
However, while discussing divorce and arguing ML's mom found out she was pregnant again, and everyone started dissuading her from divorce. She gave in but due to such stress and continuous betrayal (jerk was still meeting mistresses) she developed pregnancy and birth depression. Second child was born sickly and later died. ML's mom en*** her life...
First half of the novel is mainly focused on family affairs of FL. The second half is more for big scale politics…
I didn't read Blossom novel, sorry. Yes, I think similar to drama Blossom family affairs, but here's more politics. ML is great here too😉 I think it's more similar if we talk about family issues, like cruel elders and jealous youngsters. "Reborn of the rightful" is also not about revenge, but survival. But politics is closer to "Empress Reborn". FL doesn't consider avenging wrongdoings of those who hurt her family branch yet clearly understands court affairs and applies it to solve her family issues too.
Honestly I don't blame the fl for using him or something. Her circumstances are bad, also not just her grandmother's…
In the novel, he knew half through their relationship that she got close to him to punish her mother. Yet he still pretended not to know, even hinting that she can do whatever she wants as long as she loves him, he can forgive anything. What hurt him most when they broke up was that she still didn't trust him and his love enough to stay with him. Didn't trust enough that he would still choose her even if everyone else turns against her. "Everyone else may love you when you are brightest, I will love you even when you're in worst". Very beautiful line of ML. 😊 FL has significant trust issues due to her bitch mother and dire life she had, plus her grandma later died, which completely broke her and she left ML.
Well, they will figure every things out and be happy every after.
Well, ordinary modern setting drama, nothing novel there. Abandoned FL (she's good in every things - smart, kind, caring, etc), cheating/irresponsible ex. Constant bickering with ML followed by funny accidents. Then we can expect love and some angst. I like the actors so watching. But nothing special so far. Their acting is the only base of this drama.
Guo Meng is FL's mom, who abandoned her after her father died of illness. Recently, she got with ML's father. ML's father was cheating on his mom, and one of the mistresses was SML, Jiang Yan's mom.
So far, the drama is much softer and lighter than in the novel. There's a much more depressing and cruel atmosphere in the novel. ML's is also toned down, not as domineering and aggressive. At least not a delinquent womanizer... LXX is also brighter, smiling and laughing more easily than in the novel. And, yes, they cut quite a lot from their school dating. Enjoying:)
What's between SML and Xixiao? 💀Born first? They brothers. Xixiao's father maybe a terrible man
Right, they share the same father. ML's mom was his wife, but at the same time he had an affair with SML's mom. Both boys are several months apart only. Yeah, the father is huge jerk in the novel.
There was one line I vividly remember from the novel, which may bring a fountain of tears to me if they include that in the drama... But I still wish they would make it happen:( "I was desperately chasing after you, while you only thought about how to leave me behind"

Such a long story, but it's summarised version
