No. The manga has a happy ending. I have read it myself. From what i read, the production team of the drama has…
I forget to mention that usually all japanese BL adaptations from mangas or novels are adapted to be really faithful adaptations of the source material, in the sense that the story remains the same, including the ending. This extends to japanese dramas and movies overall, as a lot of japanese movies and dramas are adapted from mangas, since after all the manga and novel industry is huge in Japan.
The cornered mouse dreams of cheese is the only exception, the only BL where the ending was changed a bit. All the other suggestions i made are very close to the story from the manga and has a similar ending.
Japan prefer to adapt the content to be really close to the source material if they use a source material, like a manga or a novel, because of the respect they have towards the original content, towards the creators, who they want to be content with the adaptation, and because of the big following of fans the source material has, who will check the adaptation and support it, so they want to cater to those fans too, who of course will want the story to be kept similar.
I read that the director of the movie The cornered mouse dreams of cheese has consulted with the mangaka of the source material so the mangaka was aware of the changes, but the director has still apologized a lot to the mangaka because of the changes made in the adaptation.

Almost all japanese BLs, being dramas or movies areadapted from BL mangas, rarely BL novels. I will only suggest the ones that are more recently released, because they are better.

DRAMAS
- Utsukushii kare- is the only BL Japanese drama adapted from a BL novel.
- Cheery magic/30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Nareru rashii- from manga
- Life: senjou no bokura- from manga
- Pornographer, Moon Indigo, Pornographer- spring life, the movie Pornographer playback and Pornographer- : Continued Spring Life are adapted from a manga. This is the order in which they should be watched
- Given- from manga, it has two animes too- a series and a movie animation.
- Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai - from manga
-Kieta Hatsukoi- from manga

MOVIES
- Restart after come back home- from a manga
- Dangerous Drugs of Sex- from a manga
- Seven Days: Monday - Thursday and Seven Days: Friday - Sunday ( they are two part movies), from a manga
- No Touching At All - from a manga

If you will search for all japanese BLs released over the years that are adapted from a BL manga you will find more, but the ones i mentioned are more balanced in acting, production quality, writing and execution overall, this is why i limited to only suggesting those. If you need more suggestions you can message me in private.

Glad that we are having this discussion!! I respect everyone's personal opinions and I can also see how this show…
Oh. I see. Maybe a person like Hira being in this kind of relationship with someone doesn't end up well for some people, but this doesn't mean this won't work for Hira and Kiyoi. This drama is short, it only presented the journey of the characters until they get together, which is also shown in the first novel in which this drama is adapted from. There are other two novels in which both Kira and Kiyoi learn more of each of them as a person, learn from their mistakes, which makes their relationship stronger. People who liked this drama most likely has understood that this is until the drama has chosen to tell Hira and Kiyoi story or have knowledge/ have searched the continuation of their journey by informing themselves of what happens in the novels or audio dramas. There are also fans of the source material who watch the drama to see how the story is told, which will have a different perspective of what happens in the story, in comparation to other people. Because the drama is popular and they have material left to cover, we do hope they will make a second season at least.
And it was my pleasure, i hope you will see the drama from another perspective the next time you rewatch it.

I see why you will think like this.
I just want to add that Hira lack of self respect comes from his low self- esteem which originates from him experiencing being an outsider, looked down and probably bullied for a lot of years. This is hinted in the first episodes when Hira says that he only wants for a peaceful year, that he don`t mind being an invisible person. The conversation with Kiyoi in the classroom when he says that he is grateful for Kiyoi being late in class, because it has diverted other people attentions from him ( he was him saying nonsense, but it does has some true in it) also hints to this. Hira being mistreated by his collegues/classmates in school for a long time because of his stuttering, before him meeting Kiyoi, is clearly hinted. I mean is obvious Hira is used with all that happens to him, to people treating him badly. It`s not that he likes it, but he is definitely used to it.
Hira low self-esteem was the result of a lot of years, it wouldn`t get better in a short time and this lack of confidence/self-esteem doesn`t allow him to think that Kiyoi and him will ever be able to be together, so he has chosen the easy alternative, for him to idolize/worship, see Kiyoi as a king ( this is from where the obsessive element of Hira like for Kiyoi comes, but he is a good "fan"/servant, he respects Kiyoi boundaries if he decides to get away from him , he wouldn`t ever hurt him) that can only be seen from afar, from distance, because this way he wouldn`t get hurt, he wouldn`t get his hopes up. Hira is wrong, but at least he has realised in the end that he was wrong for seeing Kiyoi like this, he needs to humanize Kiyoi, but it will happens slowly most likely, and it will happen because both of their efforts. I am sure Kiyoi is able to keep him in check.

While Hira is meant to be seen as an introvert, insecure character, what distinguish him from other similar characters is his low self-esteem, his negative view of himself and the world around him and he is totally different from Adachi from Cheery magic. Adachi don`t have as many insecurities as Hira has, he didn`t have to grow up seeing others looking down on him, he doesn`t have such as low self-esteem as Hira ( he is older too, so Adachi had plenty of time to know his strengths and build more confidence), they can`t be compared in any way.
Because Adachi doesn`t have as many issues as Hira, i don`t feel the need to sympathize with him and root as much for his happines as i did with Hira. It`s because Hira struggles are much more bigger than Adachi that i find this drama better, the character of Hira is much more complex than Adachi.
I like Cheery magic as much as i like Utsukushii kare, is my second favorite japanese BL, but is not fair to compare someone who has so little issues as Adachi with someone as Hira. Honestly, i didn`t encountered until now a character as unique and hard to define as Hira, maybe Imagase in The cornered mouse dreams of cheese come close, because his love for Kyoichi is also a bit obssesive.

Maybe you will never be able to see or you weren`t able to see the things i noticed while i watched the drama and i mentioned in this post, i just wanted to add some things that maybe will make you understand more Hira character. This don`t means that your understanding of Hira is wrong, i just wanted to offer my perspective and take on Hira character.

It's quite distracting but I believe it was intentional (creative choice of the director) to emphasize how chaotic…
Yes. Initially i didn`t noticed the scenes filmed being shaky, maybe because i am used to this, (the camera being this way can be found in a lot of japanese dramas and movies), but as i keep rewatching the ep, i could see what everyone is talking about.
I also think it was definitely intentional. They have done brilliant with the camera work for the other scenes, so it was definitely like you said, a creative choice to highlight the intense emotions the characters has at that moment.

I hate characters like Hira..they are pushovers with no sense of self respect when it comes to loving someone…
Like Ginger Ale has said, every person favorite and which drama they consider the best is to a certain degree subjective and is only a matter of taste or preference.
To me, Utsukushii kare is definitely better than Cheery magic and Kieta Hatsukoi because of how quickly and concise the story is told, which was possible because of how short the drama is. Because of this, the drama can also be easily rewatched multiple times. I also tend to always like more dramas/movies which are more realistic, psychological, with complex, flawed, imperfect characters.
In my opinion, i think because the story is definitely more complex and fleshed out more than Cheery magic and Kieta Hatsukoi , and the acting is on par with the one in Cheery magic, i think this drama is better than Cheery magic, but this is only my opinion.

Title My Beautiful Man Spoiler
I'm curious, what do u mean by that *you know* part 😆
Yes. This scene is in the Utsukushii kare audio drama (with the difference that it wasn`t done on a photo he took, but a fashion magazine in which Kiyoi was in as a model) , which is a faithfully adaptation of the novel, so i am pretty sure is in the novel too.

My thoughts on some of the things revealed in the interview.A. Yagi Yusei being chosen as Kiyoi because he is…
Some of the actors that i really consider handsome are Furukawa Yuki, Yamazaki Kento, Mackenyu, Sakaguchi Kentaro, Ayano Go, Fukushi Sota ( i don t really like him as an actor, but he is handsome, and it has helped him while it has lasted). Yes, considering someone as beautiful is definitely subjective to a certain degree. For exemple my favorite actors which i also consider to be really attractive are Satoh Takeru, Masaki Suda, Yuki Furukawa, Ayano Go, Kamiki Ryounosuke, Kitamura Takumi, Yoshizawa Ryo, Kamio Fuju ( a brilliant actor)

HhHAHAHHA. I know a lot of japanese actors that are really really handsome/beautiful and attractive ( i am not new or unfamiliar with the japanese acting industry), which Yusei don`t come close, this is why i said that.
But Yusei is still very attractive and beautiful and definitely more handsome than some popular actors.
He can get at the top quickly if he chooses to also go into acting.

Holy shit, this has to be one of the best Japanese BL I have ever seen in my entire life. The story, the cast,…
Same. I have watched a lot of japanese BLs over the years and i think this drama is the best japanese BL made until now, and i include japanese BL movies too. There are some japanese BL movies that i think are close in execution, but this drama still tops them by being very well balanced, and i guess the synchronicity of the characters and actors is hard to beat. The writing and acting goes hand in hand in this drama, which is not easy to find, even on japanese BLs.

I got the feeling you are joking, this is why i didn`t said anything until now.

Yeah, I kind of agree. And we've seen only two episodes so far and their chemistry is already so strong. Also…
Yes. Agree with this. This is the decisive factor that makes them BL. Whatever a drama/movie has characters with good chemistry doesn`t matter.
I have made a reply recently when i explained that they are some rarely situations when i am torn deciding if a drama/movie should be considered by me as BL or bromance because of the source material being BL, but those are very rare situations, and it only applies to me.
Most of the time, based on the definition you and Kino san has writed, is easy to distinguish between BL and bromance.
Replying to Kino San Jan 27, 2022
Huh? I don't want to sound rude but BL means Boys Love it means the two males have to confess their love to each…
No. BL dramas/movies has or should have rules that classify them as BL, otherwise we wouldn`t be able to distinguish BL from bromance, and i agree with Kino san definition of BL and bromance, because i also use it to make the difference between BL and bromance. Like Kino san said, Cheery magic and Kieta Hatsukoi are two BL dramas, even through they don`t have kisses, because the characters are shown to be in a romantic relationship at the end of the drama, and they are confessions involved.
The only situation when i am torn between defining a movie/drama as BL or not, is when the respective dramas/movies are adaptations from a source material that is BL, in which i personally consider the movie/drama as BL, but i always mention that this is my personal opinion, because i am familiar with the source material and i see more things that people are not seeing. People shouldn`t think i am labelling the respective drama/movie wrong or trying to say things that are not accurate, is just a personal subjective opinion. Me being torn over this don`t happen often, it only happens when it comes to the bromance censored adaptations from China, this drama and the movie The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window.
The movie The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window is in a really similar situation with this drama, the manga is classified as shounen ai, but in my opinion the manga is bromance with heavy hints of BL because the characters don`t confess, and don`t get in a romantic relationship at the end of the manga, and the movie has toned down even more the BL elements.
The manga Kei x Yaku is adapted from is the same, is an ongoing manga, which until the last volume released the characters aren`t together, and we have to wait to see if the mangaka will decide if those two characters end together, but the revealing will most likely happen in the future, after the drama ends, so the source material in this case isn`t an indication on how the drama will end up being.
Because i know how the manga has ended and i watched the movie, i consider The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window to be bromance.
In Kei x Yaku case, i have to watch until the end of the drama to see how it ends, and to see how the source material ends, for me to make a definite opinion on this.
There are a lot of dramas with strong bromance, in which the characters have chemistry, but they never go beyond the bromance. One exemple is Sherlock: Untold stories. I mentioned this drama for you to see an exemple of what a consider a purely bromance relationship.

Exactly, this is how i differentiate between bromance and BL too, and this is the most accurate definition that people should take notice of.
I agree, people should wait until the drama ends to see if it will be bromance or BL, if they are so bothered by this.
