not at all lol it is extremely dark and about patriarchy, male gaze, racism, and uh rape and murder. it starts bc a 12 yr old gets pregnant so a detective has to investigate because very obviously that is uhhhhhhhh bad. her name is tui, she's asian-indigenous i am p. sure and has white adopted family with only men around. actually i think ehr bio father is there? he is white and the mom got hurt idr. one day with some "delinquent" kids, many indigenous and non-white, she runs away. there's also an all-women commune on the flipside and if you ever watch it you'll get the gist.

it's a very very very VERY dark show but unfortunately a lot of the same themes pop up everywhere (comparable would be burning sun idk if you kept up but around that time tons of stuff came out about underage trafficking as well from like an SBS head or sth, tons of things about ugh i hate to even say it just children and adults in a group setting. jeffrey epstein as well in the US as they were happening around the same time. they are potentially scared of THAT type of thing.)

it takes place in australia and is directed by jane campion who i adore. but that show is EXTREMELY just draining but it's a work of art. i vowed to never watch it again (or the show about the central park 5 which i also adored sm) it rly triggered me. i can tell you that it is a constant assault on the system lmao and the ending is juuuuuust. phew. but it is amazing.

but i think a remake of it would be amazing too! to see the cultural differences and similarities, include ethnic minorities in SK too or a big one is filipina women being exported (we have it in the US too) it's a great mystery and is uh. well lol hm theres tons of taboos and just craziness. i think netflix like u said would be good i could see lee kyung mi doing this for sure. i recommend it though :)

also i would say a difference between selfish characters particularly women who want to climb up and their learning that it is bullshit can just be people being dicks it isnt necessarily ill /intent/ but it still hurts people. that's just being mean and a dick so the journey is to get them to relax and stop. but a lot of times kdramas do noooot like highlighting the journey and like to prolong how annoying a character can be then redeem them. very few do a good job of making us feel sth for this character. someone mentioned witch's court but i found her just so abhorrent i didnt give a shit about her pain. in special inspector jo i vascillated (oscillate? idk i didnt go to english language school ok i just am) between being SO ANGRY at the not-villain (and ultimately anti-anti hero lol or like...just a lost person) and actually caring about him and being conflcited.

like that switch is needed to appreciate the whole of a character. and i think subverting expectations of a character does A LOT in that shift. think of jesse from breaking bad and think of walt—the diff outcomes and how his trajectory was basically always going to be abusive (walt i mean) and this really fascinating monster he is and jesse being a fucking mess and introducing meth that isnt needed to the community and his body but we also understand the choices as having a toxic partner (as in drugs), his drug addiction, and his life growing up poor (i mean also the show starts bc walt cannot afford to get chemo which is a clear indictment on our system and that starts out as: wtf are ppl supposed to do???)

i like that sense of urgency but the understanding that there's no perfection but the diff is making it up to others and knowing you are not owed anything that other ppl cannot have. for "heros" they have to be willing to lose power so others can gain. an anti villain like @afibbles puts it may not necessarily have that well thought out and a villain won't care. HOWEVER i think anti-villains turn into the worst when they ally with extremely dangerous and scary methods that is JUST LIKE the oppressive forces and that's where i clash.

omg u spent sm time on this! woah i am not a fan of tbbt but i think maybe they could do the comedy aspects better (i really do not find it funny but my humor is so far left field. my dad rly likes it but he likes every sitcom ever and also, like to me, he's a big fan of "good" comedy too which is why i like what i like. i can understand why people do find it funny so no judgement i mean im judging my dad but that's his fault. his sister loves it too n she's cool)

i think korean humor is a lot more sight based. idk what i have found funny but in shows it's mostly like the situation? idk if it would work. one of my fav comedies of all time is arrested dev but i KNOW that would be impossible to do (i am super interested in how koreans interpret it tho if they get a chance to watch it.) i'm trying to think of the krn shows i find rly funny and it's mostly ensembles cos that's important for humor but i cannot pinpoint what about it i DID find funny? like i'm not a huge fan of variety shows but if there's a segment of the variety where it's just kinda based on ridiculous situations and trickery/stupidity it makes for good content. i personally dont find much of k-snl funny BUT to be fair regular SNL isn't really anymore (to me) so IDK ???? does this make sense?

aw thank you sm! i think it's an amazing show and i adore s2 as well (but s2 is totally diff to s1 and a lot of ppl didnt like it lol but im a STAN i guess.) i think it has extremely thoughtful things to say about women and patriarchy, an amazing arc, and characterization that isn't as deep as it could be but that really hits. i don't want to let you down though lol while it's personally one of my favorite shows period (like western, asian, whatever and what have u lol) and except for one problem i have with logistics it really made an impression on me.

i did have to watch it like 5 times to really get it though but i wasnt paying atn fully lmao i was in school. and also i should watch things more than once to get an idea of it fully but it takes me a while to get/process things. cso of my learning disorders and i like to sit with it. when i finished it the first time i felt kind of empty for this reason.

i just think it was so smart and it's a compelling piece of work for me and i think it was the first show where i was like oh this right here is what people mean when they look at antiheros and/or villains and go along with the show don't try to guess what will happen nex, who is what, etc just go along with it and it will be revealed. also forget the antihero aspects going into it because the show lays it out for you but you want to, like i said, let it take you there. if nothing else it is extremely well written with a story and it's a lot more scathing than i realized. some of my fav female characters and just simply characters of all time. a lot of ppl say ep 1 they didnt like or they may have found it boring but man lol I DUUNNO. I REALLY HOPE YOU ENJOY IF YOU WATCH IT. and if you decide to watch s2 i hope you enjoy that too bc idk lmaoi0jsoahigpjoap ok enough fangirling!

hey, no problem! thank you for entertaining it and trying to understand—not a lot of people do on this site (and it makes me feel kinda dumb lol.)

i also think there's a lot of selfishness or not selfishness (my therapist tells me to be specific with my words lol) but a sense of pride and they get a lot of their esteem from trying to help or are naturally leaders but that comes at a cost and a huge one is relationships and risking your life. that's why i love the struggle between a person who thinks the hero is self-righteous and the hero or "hero" just being incapable to finish their job. and most of the times this hero (or always tbh) has been traumatized which i think is important to how they approach things. they tend to be more empathetic but its' not like they're not fighting dark pain which is why there's a dilemma about destruction and killing (again, batman, spiderman, superman, capt america type deal) and it depends on how we interpret that. i think batman isn't helpful but i could be making up a lot of the lore lol

i think in terms of FoE i'm realizing with IOTNBO and other things like itaewon class that have an element of psychopathy, sociopathy, narcissism (or borderline interfering) forget that these are not things that don't majorly effect life. what's included for female characters (imo) is the entitlement but i think hyun-soo is more of a tragic figure. for me i cannot see this type as anything more than abusive really (if i was the wife i honest to god would not let him make it out of there alive.) that's where i get frustrated because it's the nature v. nurture conversation but i don't think that goes far enough. but like you said this comes from different perspectives. i would like to hear more about hyun soo but i think i need more in context of how his actions affected others and what he did to ultimately be better. i didn't finish the show so i don't know and i was frustrated. but from a production standpoint it did a good job too (like visually.) idk if this makes sense? i would have really enjoyed if he was more active or was forced to be even more of a certain way. idk lmao

yea u get me lol and yea that’s true i think for me as a viewer and a filmmaker i remember from school being told, “what happens after it ends?” but that’s what i’ve been interested in and i think for a lot of these shows we are supposed to be able oto look at the possibility afer but what you said is true AND they are still characters. so it is much more individual although the more ambitious shows (or not ambitious in nature just doing a broader scope) attack a system.

the entitlement aspect changes people and your motives can be blurred if you have a predisposition to it. i could see a JB like character who had to have done bad shit who got to the billions but his antihero stance would be he decides to infiltrate and implicate himself and then we could see that. what if he toppled his own business? stuff like that,. it doesn’t negate what he did but it puts it in a new light (which i think stranger did) but generally i feel like to many the idea of “greyness” gets clouded with simple questions of morality as opposed to the tactics to get what they want. i mention the word “terrorism” (or i thought i did) and that means completely different things in diff contexts—i could go on but you get it hahah so tbh idk what im saying lol usu i just think “ok i think ur motives r dumb” or “i think ur motives r justifiable” and the damage done but many times i dont think the characterization lands? idk! idk what im saying. hahahah ty again

i dont think i believe in anti-heros in the sense that we know it tbh i can only think of one that fits this and that's done well so what we classify as antiheros is a lot of the time just, to me, "heroism" in a sense and there's also a selfishness in heroism. that also means we(me lol) re-classify villains or put the villain-ness in context (IE magneto from x-men his mission is an allegory to the third reich and jewishness + aftermath of WWII in the US) and ultimately there's a lot of radical ties. in the beginning sense he really is not a villain and it can be said that he wanted to create a state—not one of supremacy—where people could live happily
