Thank you for this very funny article !!!
I don't believe in astrology at all, though.
For proof: you put in my sign the drama I hate the most, "Goblin".
:-D
Thank you, it made me laugh a lot!

Thank you for your recommendation. I will add "Giant" in my watchlist. There are really so many that I have not…
Both dramas have similarities in the way it's told, the style. Again the opening scene is a flashforward, and again the last scene is a very moving flashback.
They are both gigantic frescos. In "Giant" we feel the same thrill and the same epic emotion. The same strength in emotions in general.

"Giant" is slightly less accomplished. You can feel it when you look at "Empress Ki" which erases the flaws of "Giant". But the context is more serious to compensate. So someone might also tell you that he slightly prefers "Giant", but one thing is certain: if you like one of the two dramas, you like the other one!
Personally, I saw "Giant" after "Empress Ki" because of the writers, and because I wanted to relive something so strong. I wasn't disappointed.

If you like cinema, you may have seen Sergio Leone's great films, "Once upon a time in the West", "Once upon a time in America". The feeling you get in "Giant", it's like "Once upon a time in Korea".
There, the viewer's involvement in the story is deep. It's really the kind of work that has nothing to do with romcom and everything that's coming out today. The story stretches over 30 years, and this is the only drama I know of with "Sandglass", which is set in a background of years of dictatorship, political changes, until the arrival of the democratic republic.

Look at the casting on the drama sheet, you'll fall off your chair !!!

There's this fabulous supporting actor, Kim Jung Hyun. He can be seen in Sandglass, Empress Ki, Queen Seon Duk. In "Giant", it's also his best acting performance. A role radically different from the others.
Bonus: Nam Ji Hyun, Queen Seon Duk's child actress, about the same age.

"Giant" was written by the same writers as "Empress Ki", it's almost as good.
Lee Moon Shik often plays characters that are a bit comical, and this is more dramatic.
I had no idea how talented this actor could be when I've seen him in so many other dramas.
kdramahooked_lady28 Mar 20, 2020
Very good article, but it's a shame there are so many actors missing.
How can we not include Jeon Gook Hwan, Kim Hae Sook and many others?
If you like LEE MOON SHIK, I recommend the drama "Giant", his acting performance is sensational!

Nice article...haven't seen all the shows here but I definitely agree with the point about a damsel in distress…
This is how things happen in real life when you meet true love.
For both men and women.
In a majority of drama, the ML is exactly the same. He becomes obsessed with LF, disobeys his parents and wants to marry her, even though he is in danger of being fired from his position as director.
True love is so deep that it leads to violent changes. And you can't cheat on it, or pretend to be strong and proud. When someone goes through that, their whole life becomes dependent on the person they love. Otherwise, it would just be some kind of superficial relationship, just a distraction, or a little physical comfort.

I really like "damsel in distress" characters. Even when the character is stupid. To put herself in such a risky…
Oh, my note for kindom doesn't mean much. It's very well done, and original (zombies to Joseon). I rated it that way because it was low in emotion and looked more like a walking dead spin-off. So a western series rather than a drama. I am unable to rate this correctly. I'd rather not put any notes on it.

Depending on your current taste in drama, I can still recommend W, of course.
Love in sadness has zero comedy, which makes the story more dramatic. As for the romance story, I can't say anything because it's spoiler. As for the happier moments when there's a little more hope... A little more hope perhaps, but not quite joyful. And then hope, sometimes, it's a passing thing. :-D
The nervous tension never goes down, so it's tense. The moments when it's a little better are the moments when your heart is tighter at the same time. Even broken-hearted. AH AH!

As soon as I read the Title of this post, Secret Garden was the first name that cropped into my head as it's a…
I have no memory of the love triangle on Master Sun. I didn't even remember there was one!!!
What I do remember, however, is the progression of the story.
Soon the drama becomes a procedural show (like for Hotel Del Luna).
In approximation: the characters have an established situation, and 1 episode = 1 ghost story to solve.
I really hate that. I like a story that really progresses, plots that totally change the game. Not a static situation, and a few sprinkled events.
What saves the drama though, is that in a very short time, these ghost stories are moving. That's one of the qualities of screenwriters. Telling a new situation and quickly involving the viewer emotionally.
But even with this perfect execution, I find it hard to accept this kind of plot.

Spoiler alert: One thing I liked about Master Sun is the persistence of comedy scenes until the end. During the last episode, a cat ghost takes over LF. So she acts like a cat, and it was very funny.
If you don't want to see the rest of the drama: I think you're right! You've already seen the main part, the best part.

The Greatest Love : like you, I noticed that from a moment on, the drama turned into a rather classic romcom, and therefore boring.

I'm taking advantage of it quickly, since we're talking about Nine.
This drama contains the most vertiginous emotional scene I've seen so far.
Second last episode: the protagonist dies in the phone booth, a little girl looks at him, and there... zzzzZZZZZZaaaAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
The ending is really complicated and twisted. We understand that in fact, the younger hero had enough information to change his destiny later on. And so this sad ending should turn into a happy ending, but it's not shown. This screenwriter can't help but create hassles that force the brain to work!

I really like "damsel in distress" characters. Even when the character is stupid. To put herself in such a risky…
I think everyone will have their own way of hating this character, according to his different attitudes.

For me, what got me off my hinges was the way he acts in an unacceptable way, while he himself does not accept that people act the same way towards him. On the scale of the drama, it's not much, just a few scenes, but it triggered my red button.
He is of an inadmissible nerve, he thinks he can do anything he wants, and he do, even when he has no right to do so. I had a fucking urge to bump into him, to smash his face in, but shit!!! Ah ah ah ! I think I love reacting like that actually. I regret to have so much distance from the characters when I watch a drama, because living it, it's super cool.

The actor is really phenomenal, he deserves an Oscar!

Otherwise, what I liked overall about this drama is that it creates an unbreathable atmosphere. It's not fast paced, but there's constant tension, no way to breathe. That's mainly why I watched the episodes as fast as I could. I couldn't take it anymore, it had to stop.

Maybe you know the movie "Donnie Brasco". It's about a cop who goes undercover in the mafia. Most of the movie, you're squeezing your butt, because he's often on the verge of being discovered, in constant mortal danger.
It's that kind of filth, but for 20 episodes...

All I know is "Failing for innocence".
Even then, it's an awkward choice.
It's a drama that's nothing exceptional, or rather that reaches a point of boredom after a certain number of episodes.

I watched it mainly for the secondary character played by Lee Si Un.
However, I was very pleasantly surprised by several qualities of the drama.
The actors are very good.
And above all, the starting situation is remarkable.
The first thing I thought of: the writer introduced two characters who have every reason to hate each other. Under no circumstances can a love story be born between them.
So I was very curious how this could happen.

Just an abusive husband? Ah ah, you're far from the truth! In all my life as a drama spectator, this is the only character I ended up really hating in the first degree! I'm worried about the actor, because he's really at risk of being assaulted in the street. It's a 2019 drama, so it's already finished airing.

I admit, your taste in drama is not annoying, just impossible to satisfy. :-)
On the other hand, it's true that I'm often annoying with music, especially background music. I'm painful even for myself. I have to listen to hundreds of songs before I find a few I like. Sometimes I discover an artist who has a great density of good compositions. It's like finding a gold mine.

The actress does a performance like I love them. A lot of micro-expressions. With her, every second is a delight. In a scene, she's going to walk into a room. You only see her reaction for a second, and yet she plays her part even then. She has a very precise expression on her face. It's not exactly fear. More like apprehension. And she's not mistaken between the two emotions. It's so perfect.

I'm not sure we have such different tastes in drama. You may not like some of my favorites. But on the other hand, I might like some of the dramas on your list. The dramas I don't like are the ones that are artificial and cheesy, but you don't like those dramas either.

Anyway, I'm so used to different and conflicting tastes, I don't care. Look at the author of the article: she likes "Empress Ki" and "Death Note", but doesn't like "W". It's TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE. Even a very complicated lobotomy couldn't produce such a result, and yet she does... naturally!

My previous comment may not have been very understandable. There is an explanation why I say such things: I am old. T T

I fear coronavirus for my family, children, elderly parent with respiratory difficulties. As far as I'm concerned, I don't care, it's just a big flu. I've suffered through a lot worse at the hospital. Then I accept your drink with pleasure. I hope it's a strong alcohol that clears the throat. :-D

Thank you for your response.

Is she weak or not?
Her situation doesn't allow such a judgment, indeed (you have to see the drama to understand how horrible it is).
I use this word because that's certainly how the character would be perceived by the audience here, who like to judge female characters according to whether they are "strong and badass" or "weak".

In any case, in the drama, she is adorable, and any man would do the impossible to help her. She has the strength and courage to take one step, but not two. I love that drama so much. I thought that nothing would reach my heart in the 2019 dramas, and then I come across this little miracle that is missing from most reviews.

Here's the scene that made me want to see the drama, with a sublime background music (I'm less demanding than you are for dramas, but much more when it comes to music... everyone has his own way of being annoying!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_ALNsdnqHk
You may briefly recognize the actor from Queen In Hyun's man. And this sublime splendor from the realm of the goddesses and gifted actress of Dionysus is Park Ha Na.
She doesn't know it, but I love her. ^^

Yeah, maybe you'll never see the drama. So I can spoil you a little. And even if one day you see it, a spoiler never takes anything away from the quality of a work, if it's really a good work!

At the beginning of the drama, something really twisted happens, a little bit nasty.
The kind of thing I quite like actually, because it's always surprising and shocking. But as I'm a fan of makjang and sordid stories, it's hardly surprising. What I like about it is the nerve of the script.
BRIEF!
The ML's father has an accident and is in a coma, almost dead. His soul arrives in the FL hotel. He begs her for his life. LF agrees on one condition. When his son is 20 years old, he must hand over his son (who must be only 6 years old).
In other words, LF has organized the bondage of the ML since his childhood!
Ah ah! It pleases me to see such off-center scenarios!

The only certainty I have about the Hong sisters: the first episode of their dramas is phenomenal! When I took screenwriting classes at university, the teacher often gave us examples of very great films, as far as the first scenes are concerned.
The Hong sisters are capable of that, a perfect sequence of the first scenes of a drama, with a quality worthy of the greatest cinema classics.
Even if you don't intend to see the whole drama, watch the first 20 minutes of "Master Sun". The way the situations follow one another, and all the comedy that comes out of those situations. The first episode of the drama "Greatest Love" is also a highlight. Today, I detect this kind of thing, and I am sometimes surprised by unexpected dramas. The first episode of "Suspicious Partners" is also excellent in this regard. Or the first episode of "I hear your voice".

It gives a good hope that the drama will be good, even if it is not always the case. We can observe the case of "Nine Time Travel". It's a script designed like that of the old dramas. It doesn't have a catchy pilot episode. It's even the opposite, the first episode is deeply boring. From there, the scenario develops in power and reaches its cruising speed from episode 4 on, and it becomes such a good drama!
Some dramas are sadly disappointing, because the beginning is brilliantly done, but unlike "Nine Time Travel", the development is more and more boring.

Now I have a "pickup" mentality. There's a drama that I don't like on the whole, and for which I love certain passages, the great classic "starway to heavens". The first 3 episodes are magical. The opening scene of episode 17 completely beautiful and heartbreaking. Etc, I cut the drama. I have to do this, there are at least 5 whole episodes of this drama that are painful to the last degree. But if I analyze the way the famous scene in episode 17 was constructed, it's gold.

English is not my native language, and even I'm pretty bad at English. So everything goes through the machine translator.
"To miss" is a verb that means "to have not noticed something". Like "I missed the train".
But I forget that sometimes you say that too when you remember something you liked... What an idea to use the same verb to say two opposite things !

I'll take an interest in CodeGeass then.

In another article, you compare Empress Ki's mind-game to Death Note's, and you haven't even seen Death Note?!
You're killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, look at the anime Death-Note, it's a must see. If you like stories with mindgames, Liar Game (Japanese version of course) is even better. And the anime Kaiji, a little less cerebral, but more psychological.

Normally, when you like this kind of story, you should like W. But there's still a difference. In DN and LG, there are explanations that allow us to understand everything. In W, the characters are in ignorance and have to guess. The spectators are placed in the point of view of the characters. The spectators have less information, and also have to make their brain work. Which they are rarely given time to do. If everything was explained directly, there would not be an atmosphere of mystery; the characters would be surprised by the plot-twists, but not the spectators. Which is still less cool. In fact this drama is incomprehensible the first time you watch it. I love this kind of delirium, but it's a bit suicidal to offer it in a kdrama.

In the same genre, there's the movie "Primer". The last part of the film is really too complicated, I saw it 10 times, but I gave up. On youtube, there are nerds who make graphic diagrams to explain it. Even then, you don't understand anything. The movie was made by a former engineer. ^^

Speaking of Code Geass, I have no idea what it is.

When love strikes, it's not always the person you imagined. ^^

I did enjoy the Hotel Del Luna drama, though, to a certain extent. The actress was pretty funny at first and the writers are talented. The episodes became boring towards the end. And when I tried to finish it, everything seemed very artificial to me.
I gave that example but maybe it's not the right one. I've seen worse, in other dramas, but I can't remember which ones, and I certainly dropped the drama, for additional reasons.

The male lead may look like a child, but he has a lot of maturity. The principle is very reminiscent of the Goblin drama. An immature 1,000 year old girl, and a serious 20 year old guy.
The male lead is someone who has found inner peace, obviously, and he often makes ironic remarks to the female lead. He never gets angry when she's angry. He may be the only guy who could tolerate her! The couple is a good match for that. I don't know what level of inner peace I would need to achieve to put myself in his shoes. He's superhuman!

The attitude of the female lead: at the beginning of her life, she was already someone with a bad temper. I am trying to analyze this logically now, I should have done it before.
If she lives 1000 years, is the head of the hotel and has power, no one will be there to confront her. So effectively, her bad temper could continue and get worse.
On the other hand... If she lives to be 1000 years old, she should still have some time to do some soul-searching... Acquire wisdom on her own.
It's hard to tell if the character is badly written or not. Sometimes the finality prevails over coherence. It will be more fun to show a funny character with childish behaviour. There's a famous law about scriptwriting "If it's funny, do it".

Afterwards, and this is also a personal feeling: actress UI is one of the actresses who have a very low impact on me. That's what I call "a cute girl", and there are plenty of them. She opens her eyes wide and that makes her pretty. But I don't feel any real femininity or charm for that kind of actress. She's a former IDOL. And in this genre I prefer Suzy Bay, who has more charm, and often makes adorable faces. Although Suzy Bay is often criticized, she managed to convince me on two dramas. In "Moon Lovers", UI also lacked stature, and with Lee Song Gi as the lead actor, that doesn't help.

There are no subtitles, so I'll summarize the context:
The two main characters can't stand each other, but they have to team up. They spy on two other characters, but they have to keep a low profile. To do this, they act as if they were an ordinary couple, with a few loving gestures...

Human behaviour has its roots in hundreds of thousands of years. At the level of the reptilian brain itself, as well as the totality of psychic representations (archetypes), and of course the physical condition. It is not a fashionable, fleeting way of thinking that will change this, except to cause more disasters because it is ignorant of human nature. The only way to move towards more respect is individual, "Know yourself", as Socrates used to say, and this is valid for both sexes.
Korean society uses the philosophy of Confucius, which was conceived in difficult times with the pragmatic aim of establishing peace. In what name would a Westerner have a say in this? To destroy that? And replace it with what? Something with no historical validity?

Writers are responsible for their work. The producer is not going to write their screenplays. His main concern is the ratings. So the only thing the producer will ask (and provided it's not a pre-production) is that the writer changes the script to make it more exciting and get better ratings (typical makjang) for the next episodes. And when the screenwriter will do it, it will be to please the female audience more...

The reason why actresses are more criticized than men has already been said. The Oppa syndrome. Personally I think actresses are better than actors. And I'm probably wrong as a man too. It's just that when I see a cute actress like Park Min-Young, I'm basically satisfied. Plus, she doesn't overact. But she's not really expressive, apart from her eyes. She's certainly an actress who's not as good as I think she is, just because I fell under her spell.
