I hope they don't make this engagement arc with Yuan in the drama.. It would be more touching if she waits for…
You wouldn't be saying that if you knew the gravity of his actions. He set aside his marriage & bright future to exact his revenge. He deceived her untill the last moment.
Just bcz you went through shit doesn't mean you put your partner through shit.
Waiting for a man that set you aside for his selfishness? After knowing everything you stand for & suffered through in life?
I am very happy she took the initiative to dump him. She finally got out of his shadow & built her own reputation.
If she'd waited for him it'd be harming herself. She deserved better than that. She was a loving, caring & supportive partner. She deserved to be respected enough to know about things that'd change the course of their life.
In the book the Empress is deposed bcz the Crown Prince is proven to be unfit to be future ruler. The most peaceful way to depose him is to depose his mother. (or they'd have to implicate him in crimes & then he'd get punished/executed)
Empress suggests this herself as she's tired of politics & unfulfilling married life. She gets deposed but not sent to the cold palace. She's just demoted. It's very non dramatic & peaceful. It's like separation in modern marriages. She still lives in the palace in another courtyard. SS thinks of her as pseudo mom so she takes care of her. But she's still very cordial with the new Empress.
There's no bitchy harem cat fight in the novel. The crown prince gets deposed & is granted a wangye title & lands & is sent there. He proves to be a good leader & manager when he only has to be responsible for lesser people & smaller area instead of the whole country & its politics.
In the novel FL & ML get close & their wedding is 3 days away when the ML enacts his revenge. He then gets punished for it. Bcz of his thoughtless actions the FL breaks her engagement with him but still asks the Emperor for leniency & helps him testify against murder charges.
After breaking her engagement & going through the whole traumatic ordeal the FL falls sick. Ling Buyi, now with restored identity leaves to bitter cold post to defend its borders in sort of exile. That's when Yuan gongzi runs to & fro to her house bcz she gets near death & her family was warned to prepare her coffin. She eventually wakes up & warms up to Yuan gongzi bcz they both have same ideology on love & get along fairly well after everything.
At some point during 5 years rumours about her start bothering niao niao, & so that her issues don't affect Chen family members she tries to propose to 2 other men but that doesn't work out. Eventually she establishes an engagement with Yuan gongzi at his behest.
That's when Ling Buyi returns accompanies by an old acquaintance of FL amidst rumours of new romance. FL gets awkward & tries to avoid him, and wants to get married even more quickly. But then she discovers ML only feigned new romance so that she wouldn't get pressured or blamed by the Emperor & so that she can live peacefully in high society.
She rethinks everything, breaks engagement with Yuan as a precautionary measure to protect Yuan Shen & his family from Ling Buyi's schemes.
Ultimately FL realizes she doesn't need a man to chase freedom & do what she wants bcz she's rich now. She then sets out to complete one last task before she fulfills her independent woman dreams.
During her journey Ling Buyi's latest rejected/scorned pretend love interest tries to take revenge on Niao Niao & that life attempt leads to another political incident. After resolving that the leads are shown to be sitting & chatting together in the last chapter when Shaoshang confronts ML to realize he loved her even back when she pulled out his arrow with the zither string. They make peace, he admits his wrongs again, they kiss, it ends. Not a very lovey end imo.
So yeah we don't see their marriage or kids in book ending. At least in the version I found online.
Honestly the last arc was completely unnecessary & I hope the drama rewrites some of that so it ends with Both leads getting together sooner, going on journey together, getting married & then defeating the evil ppl with their combined strengths instead of Shaoshang having to be DID in the end.
EDIT - apparently there are extras on the official jjwxc site where they mention/show the kids & that the couple moved away from capital after facing deaths of many loved ones. That FL never got to live like a free bird bcz her husband was always mired in politics for the greater good of the country. I dunno if this makes it any better, sounds more bleak to me.
I hope Taesan's Ceo son is shown to be a neurotypical teenage wastrel & not autistic, bcz I don't think I like the msg that autism is genetic. They've already shown the lady to have ocd tendencies. I hope her son is just a normal pc bang loving gamer who is poor at studies. Imo that enough to show contrast between him & WYW.
Like I think the impact would be bigger if the difference is between upbringing & tenacity and not genius autistic vs dummy autistic.
Spoiled rich brat boy that snaps back vs Caring, awkward at times but articulate when needed WYW
So I HATED, and I do mean HATED Something in the Rain. Since this is a remake, how close is it mirroring SITR?…
I've watched 14 episodes of this & except for 1 scene there was nothing else that was remotely similar. I didn't even realize this was a remake until I read your comment.
The parents, sibling/friend setup, job setup are all so different.
In SITR there was no actual taboo, just interfering parents. Here the leads are legally step siblings. This is taboo no matter how you look at it.
Honestly having seen it halfway through I'd say it's a loss less hateful & lot less passionate. More on the supportive, sweet side romance wise.
The acting is just passable here, as opposed to SITR that brought out a strong response to from viewers.
The ost isn't grand or too memorable but it serves the purpose & is sweet wherever its sprinkled. No atrocious grammar as such in English song. But again better than SITR that should be a classic case study of How Not To To Osts 101. The osts here won't detract from the drama & make you hate it.
The office issues feel less realistic & are more dramatized. They're also completely different from the ones in SITR.
You could reasonably watch this even if you hated SITR.
My goodness all these people need to get over that piece of lying cheating shit, it was 10 years ago!. The way SHK flatly delivers what are supposed to be moving dialogues just makes everything all the more cringe.
The way this drama paints women as obsessed with the men in their life, as if all their achievements & actions are meaningless. It's like we're watching a harem fight over a ghost.
I heard about the first two. Why do you think Angry Mom, I haven't watched it. You can spoil me ;D
There's violent bullying in school, a sexual predator as a teacher that kills students, fund corruption that leads to building collapse, other shenanigans that affect mental health of students etc.
Just bcz you went through shit doesn't mean you put your partner through shit.

The schools from White Christmas & Class of Lies would also fit the horrible humans section. Angry mom too, for various reasons.
