Oh of course, I also definitely agree with your points. I'm not an Arab so I wasn't offended by the misrepresentation, but even I could recognize that the character was quite stereotypical (which sadly happens very often and to a lot of cultures). I would've probably agreed if the majority of complaints were something along the lines of "this is not a fair representation of our culture, and we hope JTBC can do better research when including foreign cultures in the future" but to call it extremely offensive is I think taking it a step too far, especially considering that a lot of people on MDL admitted that the stereotype does carry some truth. I do also want to add a slight counterpoint, and that is that in a comedy show such as KTL, stereotyping can also serve as a form of humor (which is probably what the goal here was). Perhaps there was a more tasteful way to go about it, but people do need to have a thicker skin to enjoy comedy, and I think people have been lacking that more and more over the last few years. I think both sides could've done a lot better here.
The people who are saying "it's just fiction" yes but the culture they misrepresented is real. People have every…
Like the other person said, I think the issue at this point is Arabs have severely overreacted and created a huge mess over something that was, quite frankly, not even that harmful. All they did was present an Arab prince who liked to party and hang around women. But they also presented him as an understanding and charismatic person. Overall I found the character quite likable and the people who got offended blew the issue so out of proportion that people like me who initially thought "yikes, maybe a rather bland and stereotypical portrayal of an Arab prince but what else is new" stopped taking the whole issue seriously at all because of the extreme reaction from the "eternally online" users who created fake accounts just to downvote a freaking drama
Putting this out here in case I turn out to be right in the future, but I have a theory that CEO girl is not HaeSun's…
Woah that's a fun theory. My own theory was a Rooftop Prince type situation where she turns out to be not as kind of a person as the ML once thought, so he falls in love with FL instead.
How does it matter? The arabs are losing thats enough
I'm just bringing up a question about the website's rating system, not trying to present any sort of opinion on the matter (at least not in this comment)
Wow, Turks would kill themselves if they had the sensitivity of Arabs. In almost all American movies/shows mentioning…
Was gonna say the same thing about my own nationality. I'm Russian and I have never once seen a Russian character not be stereotyped by the media and turned into an alcoholic mafia lord or a weird "rough around the edges" secret agent. Never have I seen this much defensiveness from my own country every time a work of fiction depicts us as a caricature once again.
If you hover over the big rating "button" it shows that all but the verified ratings have absolutely tanked but for some reason the overall rating is pretty stable. I'm so confused about that
I don't care about sad or tragic endings (we have no idea what ending this drama will have), I find it annoying…
Yes! Tragic stories are some of my favorites and tend to stick with me for so much longer and become so much more impactful in my life. I hate every minute of it when I'm watching them and the raw pain after such an ending is absolutely horrendous, but for some reason it's like a drug I keep coming back to. Definitely not for the faint of heart though
People take offense to the silliest things... And this is coming from a person whose nationality has not once been portrayed positively by the media. Guys, it's really not a huge deal. Life goes on.
