I see so my concerns were right...its a propaganda thats unintentional but convenient to air to the masses especially to the modern women that shaoshang reflects. I strongly believe that if the time travel elements were incorporated in the story her character wouldnt be portrayed as annoying and naive but one that is legitimate and sensible in pursuing her liberties...

With that also being said, the responses underneath my comment excluding a responsible few makes me very worried at how passively a lot of people are consuming the content. They keep using the rhetoric of "it accurately depicts the time period" and insist on salvaging the show from any form of valid criticism. Clearly some people are going to internalize such a portrayal as many people of our time can heavily identify with shaoshang whether consciously or unconsciously. Ive said this once and ill say it again but you dont need transport a character from a different space and time to another in order to acknowledge problematic issues and critically assess whatever youre consuming...i apologize if this annoyed you but ty and have a nice day 😊

Man i didnt expect to get vulgar but you keep provoking me to make your nonsense sound legitimate and yet you speak like someone whos brain development is still at a stage below object permanence as you barely even address the argument and instead go for a straw man strategy lmao

Again the crux of the matter isnt a comparison but acknowledgement...you dont have to position a character in a different space and time to acknowledge that theyre right in pursuing their natural rights and liberty as a human being...the show doesnt acknowledge that and infact expects shaoshang to always compromise at most as a form of rebellion...she is an engineer for heavens sake which was even something that was praised during the song dynasty but this show purports that to be useless and wrong cause women have a designated role in society and she just casually accepts that cause shes expected to. The are forces continually oppressing her and constantly reinforce a patriarchal misogynistic view throughout the entire show

First off thank uou for giving a not brain dead comment

Now im not denying that it isnt historically accurate in fact im doing the opposite. Im trying to say that show needs to acknowledge how flawed society was back then and to depict as flawed and not try to use "realistic" depiction as a way to characterize Shaoshang as the way theyre doing currently... it promotes a conservative message as shaoshang is clearly a reflection of a modern woman (anyone with basic analytic skills can tell that). It is wrong and makes the show fundamentally flawed

The characterization of shaoshang and tone of the show says otherwise…..then again I doubt you possess the critical skills to see that

Dw that’s a good thing XD… I’m not hostile and you provided evidence that proved my point on why people should be careful and critical of this show

I feel sometimes watching dramas make it hard because we at times can forget we're also looking and examining…
That’s a bit of an overstatement….China is relatively more backwards than the west regarding women and their rights …this show promotes a message where being backwards becomes perpetual and that is wrong

That’s saying our modern lens is illegitimate when clearly our modern lens is us knowing better and knowing that women deserve better

Again and again I get it but your rhetoric is wrong…it’s equivalent to saying that since everyone owned slaves in the 1800’s and was okay with it a show in our modern times telling or depicting a story from that time should do the same and not acknowledge how wrong it is for the sake of “realism”…secondly even if the husbands are “beta” males it doesn’t salvage the show from my criticism. ultimately the women eventually either end up falling back on misogynistic and patriarchal mindset and ideals to resolve just about anything and continue to seek out compromises for the sake of “culture” and “society”

First of all she is smart and secondly even though you get my point you still insist on salvaging the show…so what if people can differentiate? The point is the show is flawed fundamentally and so it’s message and world

this Is set in ancient times😂
Y’all are starting to sound like a hive mind conditioned into believing that it alleviates it from any criticisms…PLEASE READ PREVIOUS COMMENTS BEFORE COMMENTING

Yes Ik that more than you probably do but again it isn’t simply there to depict something it’s there to impart a message as well…that’s fundamental to every piece of creation and art. The show is a message to those who are like shaoshang which is basically the modern woman..that they should prioritize society and culture which is still oppressive and patriarchal and compromise for a sliver of their natural/god given liberty

That's because the 'time setting' in historical dramas is the past, the era where conservative culture prevailed…
Again that isn’t okay cause the show has a lot of bias…clearly the purpose of it isn’t just to depict the era but to impart a message to its viewers …as I’ve explained in my previous comments

Which isn’t okay but the show purports that to be the case…shaoshangs rebllions are always shelved away with some illogical plot lines which h makes her character underwhelming and quite honestly disappointing

Ugh even if it is the show portrays a bias and is clearly meant deliver a message not simply depict something….that’s the point of art universally

I expected such a response and I’m sorry but what you’re saying is not legitimate and honestly doesn’t salvage the show from my criticisms…even if it was trying to be “realistic” it still has a lot of bias towards women like shaoshang. Shaoshangs character is reflective of the modern woman and the show purports that to be a bad thing cause “society” and “culture” demands that she occupies a space of being oppressed and should seek out compromises as that’s what she’ll should at most get…her liberty is infringed upon and her intelligence as engineer and an emotionally intelligent person is always belittled

Shaoshang always has to compromise to authority and even if it was it was only limited to those of the royal family I would’ve been like okay that’s fine but it’s mostly to an overtly patriarchal misogynistic society
