This is quite normal I think. In a lot of things, not just media, the first of something , the breakthrough of something (which is largely what the TU is in many ways in this particular genre), will not always have the same impact on newer people who encounter it, especially since they would have watched newer releases of things in the same genre first. Curious though, were you disappointed by the story or production value?

I think some people tend to get confused at different points early in The Untamed. It's not about being dumb or anything, the story narrative isn't totally linear. If you're confused about something specific feel free to ask about it here. I can try to explain, or someone else here will answer for you.

Well, if there's one thing I can absolutely agree with you on, is that the manhua art is untouchable. It's impossibly stunning.

I think HC will be difficult to play too. It's not easy to just have the right demeanor of a nuanced non-expressive character. HC has a very distinct presence imo. The weight and details in his expressions and attitude are gold and important. I'll be really disappointed if the actor (however he looks) lets us down in terms of acting. As for the Asian aesthetic, I don't really have a preference. I like a handful of Chinese actors at best haha. If this was remade in a western version, I'd want someone who looks like this actor:

But as I mentioned before, I know it's an Asian BL drama and so I have accepted it's going to be a very 'pretty' cast all around. I don't mind it either way. But as a fan, we all have our concerns for our fave characters, right? hehe

But yeah, it's a complex project, a huge undertaking. I also have low enough expectations that I'll make it through the show in the end, by sheer will alone! 😆

I have heard that Weibo is a mess when it comes to fans and fandoms, but I can't understand anything on that site so I'm spared the drama 😆 As for the actors, I can't say anything about them being good looking or not, since that is also a matter of preference and taste, but for me, I feel like the actor rumored to be playing HC isn't severe or sharp enough. But maybe, hopefully, the makeup and acting will make up the intensity that the actor's soft, doe eyed appearance lacks. Same for XL, despite being Forever 17, after 800+ years of living the life he'd lived, the countenance of soft youthfullness would not be the same. So the rumored actor, also, young and baby-faced, as you mentioned, will just be bringing prettiness to the table? I can only hope the production and acting makes up for it. No one can really say at this point.

I've said before on here, before the rumored cast was even released, that it'd be nice to see more mature actors land these roles. Or at least, less baby face, regardless of the age they actually are, you know? But I also know these C-dramas are supposed to have unrealistically beautiful characters, so I have to put my westerner brain to rest and accept the shiny, pretty, flawless guys🤣

So yeah, at this point, I'm gonna watch it regardless and hope for the best.

Honestly, I don't have any ideas of who I'd prefer, I'm not familiar enough with all the Chinese actors to pick anyone. I just think visually the rumored main cast doesn't fit so far, based on googling and youtubing them. We are all entitled to our visual preferences after all. That said, I'm not saying the show will be awful, I truly hope it won't. I have every intention of watching and I want to enjoy it, too. I love the novel, I have high hopes for the show (albeit not for the appearance of the casting). Hopefully the acting and script will save the show for those of us who aren't happy with the casting. But still, over all, keen for this drama.

I think both of the rumored main leads are not a good match for the characters. Bad form.

Casting is the thing I also think might be a deal breaker for this story's depth.

Waiting for Heaven Official's Blessing, iffy about who'll be cast, but still super keen.

TU was my first Chinese drama ever, I'd watched other Asian stuff, mostly Japanese at first because manga=anime=live action=dramas, and then Korean historical and modern stuff, so I was similar to you coming into Chinese period drama. The first time I watched TU I found the directing in the action scenes to be odd. But I was already head over heels for Lan Wangji and co. by that point, so it didn't matter to me. But it could be because I came to TU after the Donghua and novel of MDZS, so I was already very attached to the characters and story. If you're a reader (I know not everyone is) and you like the premise and over all gist of TU, and if you want to try to make it to the end, you might want to read the novel or eve get started on the manhua first. It might be the 'hook' you're looking for.

Oh, nah, don't worry. I'm not a fan who's gonna get mad at you, nor am I going to try to talk you into keep watching. I'm just surprised you're still watching honestly, considering everything you've said you don't like so far. You're more resilient than I am. I've dropped shows for far less, and I certainly don't stick around for an actor/character. heh. If you're watching for WW though, he's in every ep, and he's a consistently likeable and great character. Maybe he'll keep you around until the end. As a fan of all MDZS media, I'm not unaware of the little flaws and budget shortfalls of this show, but it's incredible anyway for me. In the western world, TU could be considered a cult classic imo. Once it gets you, it's got you. There's no looking back, man ¯\_( ͠❛ ͜ʖ͠❛ )_/¯

I don't know if bisexual can even apply to him tbh, he literally had two different bodies. In his original body, I think he assumed he was het considering some of the things he'd say, but then, he was also unconsciously drawn to Lan Zhan as well, and then it all became background noise after he started his new cultivation. He died with everything being pretty vague. After he was resurrected, he questioned his developing attraction toward Lan Zhan once or twice, which again eludes to the idea that he always considered himself to be het in his past life, but he got over that pretty fast. And in Mo Xuanyu's body, technically he was gay, not necessarily because MX had been, but more because in the end, Lan Zhan was the only person he wanted and felt that way for.

I agree calling him bisexual is inaccurate though, I think we'll never know what he was in his first life. Aside from the author clarifying it, it'll always be something to speculate. However, in MX's body, he def wasn't bisexual imo. This is just how I see it.

Oh, yeah, I know some fans can get a little crazy for their favourites. I don't use Weibo though, couldn't understand it even if I tried ? I'm not sure why they panic anyway, we can't actually decide the cast in the end, we just have to accept whoever it is and decide whether we'll watch or not.
