On Jack & Joker: U Steal My Heart! Sep 17, 2024
There are so many plot holes in this it's wild lol but I think the saving grace for it is that it's not taking itself too seriously and the premise is interesting. Episode 2 was quite entertaining. The actor of Joke is also especially enjoyable to watch, his comedic moments are fun.

2. That's what I thought. I commented further down that it would have made 1% more sense for Neil to have been the one to initiate the kiss because the following sequence of events contradicted Sea being the one to kiss him.

Since Neil is the one who confessed and it seemed Sea was a little overwhelmed, it would have made 1% more sense for the kiss to have been initiated by Neil. But over all, that 1% was still top notch, just a bit at odds with the sequence of events that followed.
On First Note of Love Sep 16, 2024
This episode was actually perfectly done, the emotions, the reveal of feelings, the flow, the scene changes, the humor, the music practice sequence, the tension between them, all of it was on point! It was at 99% all the way. There is only one thing I would change in order to make it 100%.

Title The On1y One
Andy Chen shouldn't have been a side character, he should have been cast as Jiang Tian. He gives Gu Hai vibes…
I personally think Andy Chen is a far better visual serve than both MLs. I would like to see him a main role in something else though. I like the role he's playing in this, his character and scenes are entertaining, I haven't skipped any of his scenes so far.

Title Love Is a Poison Spoiler
It went from meet cute, to stalker, to con man in 19 min. LOL That escalated quickly.
I usually don't like when JPBLs do the whole 'anime' style adap thing, it's usually a big miss, but the actor of the ML Ryoma is nailing it. I also really like the cover picture for this show, it's very outstanding.

It's an average movie, but still an entertaining watch.

Ep 2:
Earn "It's true, I love you, and I will do everything to get you back."

....except communicate with human words lol. She literally just has to actually use her words and say there was a misunderstanding and that they need to talk about what happened, even if she wants to leave out the whole 'your mother threatened me' part of things, she could still say she found out about the engagement to Wisanu and felt betrayed so she reacted badly. Instead she's been weird and extra about it. I don't blame Lada for being so defensive, that break up was effed up. heh. Entertaining.

Title The On1y One
Nice relationship development and good acting in this show.
Ngl, personally I like Gao Tian Yang more than the ML's, I mean, in terms of the actor's looks and my personal aesthetic preferences for ML appearances, but also Gao Tian Yang's character is very likeable.

The only two drawbacks I have found that bother me so far is:
1. Sheng Wang's character personality is a hit and miss for me, when he acts like a spoiled brat it's very off putting. And he acts like a brat a lot.
2. There is music in scenes were silence would serve better, like when they were talking with their respective parents, the music was kind of blocking the emotional tones.

Still, really solid pacing, acting and build up happening here. Good stuff.

The only reason BL hires new actors is because established actors won't do it. I won't say I disagree with you…
Yes, I agree other JBLs could be classified that way. I suppose I've just paid more attention to this one because I enjoyed it more than other JBLs and I was hoping for the emotional BL hook, but it didn't happen, at least not for me. Also, there was nothing stupid about your comments or opinion, I appreciate a good discussion about a show!

The only reason BL hires new actors is because established actors won't do it. I won't say I disagree with you…
For me, I classify it as pre-BL because they did not actually move beyond being friends until the last few minutes of the show, not even through anything being implied or in subtext, as intended in Cn BLs. They were actually, genuinely just friends for 12 episodes then they confessed and it ended.

I think Star Struck is also an example of how casting popular or well known faces in a not-really-BL can backfire on them quite badly. Sunspot's saving grace is that the story itself, and the acting, are good, so it can stand without even calling it a BL.

Certainly not a fast track BL bandwagon. This is based on an 11 year old manga that is relatively well-known and…
The age of the BL original content is not the point, the popularity of the genre and casting of young, new actors to draw the substantially growing fanbase is the fast track. It's the same reasons production studios world are remaking so many old films and TV series ad nauseam, it's either a cash grab, or a chance to boost someone's career.
On I Hear the Sunspot Sep 11, 2024
The ending was okay. Another J (not really BL) that I can't give a 10 though, not even a 9 really, just an 8, but basically just because it was a good production, well written with an interesting story and good acting.

Side Note:
From my personal perspective a 'BL' like this -with no actual BL- is made for two reasons-
1. New actors need a show in which they can depict their acting range so they can get better and more main roles in the future
2. They need a show that will make them popular and well known, fast

A BL series these days is the fastest track to achieve that for young male actors, however the downside of this is usually that the actors don't want to do BL or be associated with it long term, so the show barely scrapes by being a BL at all, just toes the line, as it were, which is what has happened here. Another example of this was Star Struck (except that show was not well written at all). I could be wrong, but when I see a good production like this with 'BL' slapped on it when there is basically no BL in it at all, there is no other explanation I can think of. The people behind it are just trying to jump on the fast track BL band wagon. Which, blah.

Even so, as a standalone show it was entertaining and I am glad to have discovered Kobayashi as an actor, it's the first time I've found a Japanese actor likable, talented and attractive since Kenichi Matsuyama so many years ago. I will move on from this very quickly though. It failed to leave a lasting impression. They had one shot to have an emotional impact on the BL viewers in ep 12, but even the hug after the confession didn't land well at all.

8/10

I like the write up, it sounds interesting. I never used to expect much of the acting in JBLs but 2024 has so far been better for them in that department, so I would like to see what this one has to offer. Can I expect less make up, stiff hair and white washed faces? I'd appreciate that, it's getting harder to avoid in all BLs these days.

They're forced to sublimate, they legally have no choice, but they do what they can to make the non-platonic relationship known as much as they can, and they do it so very well imo. Their relationship development is usually fantastic, far exceeding standard BLs, and their acting standard is higher as well. But it certainly isn't to everyone's taste. Taiwan is beginning to step up recently. I look forward to more from them.
