Really enjoyed Dong Xuan's scenes. The emotional moments between Ruan Sheng Wen and Sun Jian with the dialogue and BGM in ep 13 - 14 are quite good. That brief sword vs blade duel and the freeze frame cinematography.... very nicely done. The face off between Li Ang and Liu Bo Xiao, and their exchange... The veterans are nailing it, plus the young guy too.
Xie Yun is playful and quick witted, I like that about him. And yes, Zhou Fei isn’t the type to stay dumb for…
Yes, totally with you on this one. It's picking up from the last few episodes and the dynamic between the both of them is refreshing to see. We need more female empowerment and strong characters - so far I count 3 here.
You give me hope... I am gonna watch 9 tonight. :)
Yes, good point. The editing feels a bit off in certain scene transitions, and I've had to figure out some parts that were either edited out or weren't included in. I hope this doesn't keep happening later on but this won't be the first drama this year to have massive cuts so I'm bracing myself.

Great analysis! I for one feel that the pace is not the issue, in fact too many things are happening that the scenes just seem to breeze through without letting them breathe, hence the lack of emotional connection. There are good moments here and there but like you mentioned, some scenes seem a bit bizarre (not just with Xie Yun but also scenes at the town and the inn...). But it's only 10 episodes in for me so let's see where this goes.
Interestingly, I find that the older supporting cast are doing a good job so far, perhaps due to experience and maybe they're having fun with their roles...

That's good to know, actually Li Sheng being capable of making people angry is a good sign of getting us viewers to feel some emotions, at least it makes us more invested. Thanks for your kind words, there are many other more outstanding reviewers here watching the show too and it's good that we can have these productive and fun discussions :)

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I haven't read the novel so it's good to gain some perspective of it from the readers. Looking forward to the story picking up. I'm hoping for more emotional connection and depth from the characters in their respective scenes, not only in terms of the martial arts action.
Just sharing my humble thoughts - the minimum of what I expected, I finally got it in episode 9. The sense of urgency and agency, that depth of despair and devastation. The sensation of coming alive (both drama and me) begins at that point.
(I'm not talking about romance or chemistry by the way, I'm more concerned with the story)
True, totally agree. This is the only drama page of a drama I'm watching that I don't really hang around at much, so far on MDL. I'll just keep my thoughts to myself and watch quietly. I have a few shows that are on my radar (mainly K-dramas) but only consistently watching this one (for now) and Qin, which I'm way behind. There are a few interesting contemporary C-dramas that I'll probably start next year eg Black Lighthouse, My Supernatural Power (with Kris Fan from QQZJ).
