Tyvm - would love to hear what you think of the drama since its so dark... do ping me or do a review.
Hey! Yup, the release of this drama is such a big event in itself, so I have to watch it, but it's good that your review as well as this one helps me to prepare for what is to come :) Which shows are you watching currently? I'm enjoying Qin Dynasty Epic at the moment :)
For me i find littlefinger Lord Baelish to be a close matchup for Lv Buwei
Hey, good point. And, he's a businessman too. In some ways, this show does give me GoT vibes. The way this drama is presented gives us multiple POV characters rather than just focused on a few leads.
Thanks so much for this lovely article. Wonderful selection of OSTs and fantastic recommendations too! I enjoy music in dramas and usually pay extra attention to soundtracks, so I really do appreciate your efforts on this :)

Sure thing. I just discovered that it's showing on Astro so I'll be watching it on that platform but episodes are being released very slowly (only up to ep 6 now I think) so I'll binge it once more than half gets released. Which is just as well, since there's Qin Dynasty Epic and a few others I'm catching up on now. Tbh, when I first heard about The Wolf a couple years back, I thought it was going to be an epic fantasy/ wuxia that's straightforward and filled with uncomplicated romance. I didn't expect it to be epic in a melodramatic and tragic sense... But, will still watch it regardless, even though I already know the ending. Your review kind of helps me prepare mentally for what is to come.
Great review and poem at the end. For a moment, it sounded like a review for Zootopia lol Will start watching it later this month and appreciate each character's animal avatars xD
That's cannot be helped, the girl just a like puppy following jiang shuo everywhere. I thought she is gonna be…
Agree. His character is the strongest and most logical so far. The other two come across as impulsive, reckless and brainless at times. I expected more from them, tbh. If not for QYH, they wouldn't have accomplished so much. Initially I was indifferent about the romance, but now I feel like it's getting in the way of the story moving forward :/
The passive aggressive type. I've never seen this version of Lv Buwei before tbh.
That's a good point. I have trouble rooting for the brash and overconfident opportunistic types. But the subtle manipulator has so many layers and probably that's why this current version we're seeing feels refreshingly different and so far quite intriguing. Nie Yuan's portrayal was a bit OTT, I was a little annoyed actually. I'm curious to see more of this Lv Buwei.

I've watched the movie version, HK TVB version and the recent one that's still fresh on my mind is Nie Yuan version from Hao Lan. In all these versions, I recall Lv Buwei as being very assertive, scheming and gives con-man / car salesman vibes.
This version.... Duan Yihong is portraying him as mild mannered, soft spoken and very passive aggressive (how he "psychologically influences" people to do his bidding). It's almost like Jedi mind trick lol
I guess it's a refreshing change..? But need to see more of this version before deciding.
Check your Youtube, it may be faster - 5 or 6 are out already but you may get better quality on WeTV if you are…
Thanks, sis! Yup, 5 episodes are out but I've only managed to watch 1 ep during lunch, so will need to play catch up once I get home this evening lol Thanks for the link - it's always good to have back up options, especially for a show as good as this, so far xD
But yeah, this is the kind of blemish that requires Fu Rong-level makeover :/

Love a strong and courageous FL any time, it makes the drama even better.
The real MVP of the show, and his Jedi mind tricks are awesome to behold!
Zhang Yong Gang's version of the King of Chu gives me Xie Xun vibes lol
Wonderful selection of OSTs and fantastic recommendations too!
