I didn't watch that but I did come across it, and it looks like a light fluffy romance comedy. I think the version of pirate in there is meant to be adorable and cute rather than the dashing and swashbuckling classic pirate lol It's really amusing what producers come up with these days xD
Reading about the actual woman, her story would've made for a very good drama but it unfortunately wasn't to be…
Thank you for sharing beautiful music :) Yes, that's the beauty of C-dramas particularly wuxia and xianxia dramas, some of the OSTs are hauntingly enchanting and really fits the poignant scenes. Sa Ding Ding is an outstanding singer and has a great voice.

Looks like we share a common love for tales of adventure! I had a similar childhood experience - reading all these classics with books borrowed from the library and then watching them on tv as matinees. All these have been reproduced and remade countless times that there are so many reincarnations but I'll always remember the 70s and 80s versions. There is a simplicity to how these movies were made, without all the elaborate technology employed then. But I do appreciate some of the newer remakes as well. Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne were particular favourites as well, along with Jack London, Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Arthur Conan Doyle, and many others. Come to think of it, it's been a while since I last read a book lol The same goes for classic wuxia tales. Jin Yong and Gu Long are up there in the list. There's just so many wonderful classic stories that can be remade countless times (provided they do justice to the material). You're right, I hope such classic tales in both written and adaptation formats can be made more accessible to a wider audience. Good stuff!

OMG. Now that you mentioned it. The ONE thing that I loved about Bloody Romance (I didn't really enjoy the story, tbh, but I loved the setting and the world-building) is the opening theme. It was just.....DAMN GOOD! I consider it and the ending theme for Song of Glory to be among the best OST in C-dramas. Waiting for You - Tia Ray (OST Bloody Romance) Hidden Heart - Bibi Zhou (OST Song of GLory) I think I'm just gonna go listen to them now. Thanks for the reminder!
Finished 5 eps this evening! It's my kind of Historical drama. You should watch this!
I watch everything that's historical and fantasy lol Tbh, I find the story on the Liao Dynasty quite refreshing because most historicals are generally about the Han dynasties and not a lot about the so-called "invaders" eg Liao and Jin (with the exception of the Qing which already has tonnes of dramas). The settings, politics, way of life and yes, the wonderful costumes (and braided hair). This drama is definitely big budget, judging from the entire cast and from what we have seen of the cinematography and everything. I really think this show is THE EPIC HISTORICAL of 2020. The closest thing to compare is The Promise of Chang'an and even that pales in comparison. Let's enjoy this drama together! :)

You have such great passion for this genre, I like it! Sometimes (actually all the time), I truly miss the classics. They just don't make them like they used to anymore. I hope new talent comes up with modern masterpieces sooner rather than later. As for this show, will have to patiently see what transpires...

Yes, definitely agree. The biography provides enough content for an epic tale to be adapted directly into drama format. There must be a commercial element to the contrived romance plot, probably to entice more viewers into watching a historical drama. Depicting empowerment and independence as part of female emancipation apparently isn't sufficient for the producers, they need ROMANCE and LOVE to complete the story. And then end it all tragically (hopefully not in this show).
I love the Song dynasty and all its heroes and heroines too, but it's good to have a balanced view of both sides to the conflict and, for a change, let's have some scenery and grassland instead of the usual stuffy settings :D

That's true, they share similar themes. Interestingly the FL in TPoC started brightly as well, riding horses in the open fields and such.... then we ended up hating her! Hopefully this one ends less tragically and with an FL that we can all root for. Come check back in a couple of weeks' time and see how the mood is here - if it's sombre, probably best not to ever start lol
Xiao Yanyan's life story would have been interesting enough without a made-up lovestory. When did the Chinese…
This sounds great! A strong and powerful FL with a great outcome. And, for a change, we see the perspective of the Liao Dynasty, because the Song Dynasty (and their famous Yang clan, inclusive of their well-known daughters and Yang family spear) has been glorified countless times. The only uncertainty now is how the screenwriters will incorporate this romance angle into the story.

This was such a great drama to review!
Take care there. Hope you recover soon :)
