I have watched countless dramas that deal with heavy subjects. I’ve seen many dramas with sad storylines, but this one… this one, along with Sword and Beloved, left an especially heavy feeling in my heart.
It’s far from being the best drama I’ve watched, and it’s not even close to being my favorite. Yet every time I think about it, or even just see an edit, it brings me to tears.
Wangquan Hong Ye no matter how he treated his son, I can’t bring myself to hate him. I feel like his character is one of the most complex ones. And then there’s Wangquan Fu Gui. His relationship with Hong Ye is just… heavy.
omg episode 28 and 29 , I bawled my eyes out 🥹🥹🥹. That hug between JZ and the mom , they both needed it. I was frustrated with her at first but when she explained and reflected on it , it change my perspective. She was definitely one of the first adults who failed JZ but characters development it is.
On one side, you have a 19–20-year-old girl who is still discovering herself and learning how the world works. She was sheltered her entire life and only truly began to “see the world” when she went to find him. Slowly, everything in her life started revolving around him. Her studies, her decisions almost all of them were made with him in mind. Her world became him.
At 19 or 20, she was just stepping into real life. She was young, with so much left to discover and accomplish. Then everything collapsed at once: her mother, in another country, became seriously ill and might have been dying, and at the same time, Jin Zhao was in an accident and might not survive either. Jin Zhao didn’t know if he would ever walk again. JM’s mother was in a similar life-or-death situation.
Faced with that reality, Jin Zhao made a decision that was both selfish and selfless. JM’s world was already falling apart; any rational person would have told her to go be with her mother. Jin Zhao understood the possibility that he might be permanently disabled. Would it really be fair to place that burden on a 19–20-year-old girl who had her entire life ahead of her?
Yes, love matters but let’s be realistic. She would have dropped everything, put her life on pause, and sacrificed her future for him. He didn’t want that for her. As he said in episode 24, she was too young, and he couldn’t do that to her.
That said, it wasn’t his decision to make alone. He should have talked to her, explained his reasons, and been honest. Instead, he ignored her and let everyone lie to her about him. That was his mistake. He was wrong for handling it that way.
But letting her go? That part was right.
There’s also pride, ego, and dignity involved. He didn’t want her to see him in that state. He wanted to heal. He wanted to become the best version of himself for her. Unlike her, he didn’t grow up sheltered he had to figure things out on his own, and he carried his own pain and struggles. He wanted to prove that he was worthy of her, to the world and to her mother.
His lack of maturity made him hurt her deeply, and you can see that he carries guilt over it. He didn’t act perfectly but his intentions weren’t cruel. They were complicated, flawed, and human.
1- HOLY SH*t episode 20 , didn’t see that coming 2- XHA is more dangerous than I thought , the only thing that kept him sane is his vendetta. That’s why they say the quiet one are the most dangerous.
