I don’t think you are reading too much into it. I think that were the story might be going. I would go has far to say that I think Emperor want Ml to get rig of the evil prime minister . that’s why he pretty much let ml do what he want while still keeping appearances in court.

From my observation, I don’t think emperor is a bad person. He seem to keep his distance from Ml for a reason and with the snake( current empress) still around it’s risky, she already want to get rid of ML .
If she sees that Ml and emperor are close , we don’t know what she could do . Emperor knows that.

The way the Emperor is acting makes me think that He protecting not only Ml but Ml’s mom( late empress if she’s really alive ) . He want Ml to show his value and what his capable of so that he can be the heir aka crown prince. So far neither are crown prince just first prince and second prince.

what if ….. Ml mom aka late Empress is alive ???!!! and the emperor knows,she alive and at that place were they send NF . Maybe that’s why the emperor forbid everyone to talk about the late empress , because she was sent at that mysterious place so they can save her 🤔.
