I think, from all the novels I read that are set in ancient China, if a crown prince dies before he is named emperor, then his heir cannot be considered an heir to the throne because he is not even considered an Imperial Prince, just an heir to the Crown Prince. Unless the previous Emperor wrote an edict naming the Crown Prince's heir to succeed the throne after him, the Crown Prince's heir's position would be considered super awkward. For this case, I will refer you to two novels:

1. Eight Treasures Trousseau.
2. Jin Wang Dotes on His Concubine.

If you ask me, Prince Liang has more legitimacy to the throne than the Crown Prince's heir, because he is, at least, an Imperial Prince, the late Emperor's son last living son.

Li Ni is an Imperial Grandson = Emperor's Grandson. Since the Emperor is dead, even the Crown Prince is dead, the only Imperial Prince alive is Li Ni's father. The Crown Prince's heir is, however, still alive. So, when General Pei wanted Li Ni to assume the role of the Crown Prince, with his father as the Emperor, Li Ni refuses.
The Crown Prince's heir is the Imperial Grandson they are all looking for now.
The current emperor is the General Sun who rebelled.

Xu Kai didn't have hot chemistry with FL in Ancient Love Poetry. It was also one of his best dramas, especially in terms of acting. There's also Lingjian Mountain...

Finally found someone who also does not connect with Ren Jialun, like me. I really want to watch his dramas, but something about him just turns me off.

Don't worry about the ratings on here. I remember Ancient Love Poetry also started very low on MDL, now look where the ratings are for that drama.

People recognize quality, and naturally, the ratings will change.

I've posted this comment below for someone who was asking the same question. I'm posting here again:

I read that since Xu Kai was born and raised in Shenzhen, he is very fluent in Cantonese. He is, however, not very fluent in Standard Chinese, but he is getting there as he is dubbing for his dramas in modern setting. It is understandable for Xu Kai to not dub for his historical setting dramas, since most Chinese actors and actresses, who are fluent in Standard Chinese, also find it hard to dub for their own historical setting dramas, much less Xu Kai, who is not that fluent.

Xu Kai did his own dubbing for Yang Hua in She and Her Perfect Husband. If you compare, Li Ni's voice does not match with Yang Hua's. It does, however, match with Lu Sicheng from Falling Into Your Smile. Xu Kai did not dub for Lu Sicheng.

I don't mind being spoiled lol. Of the few reviews I read, there weren't any spoilers that the drama hadn't spoiled us yet. And since only Part 1 was released, there is not much to spoil anyway.

Thank you for pointing out the right direction. I went through Douban and read the reviews for the novel -- It seems, as per the reviews, only part 1 of the novel was released. So, we don't know if it is a happy ending yet.

Lol, I don't get why people, who are clearly not interested in a drama, make an effort to search places online to write that they do not like the drama and that they are dropping it. What's the point?

It's hard to say if it is an original or an adaptation. The author of the novel is also the screenwriter. Not sure when she wrote the novel, but she started publishing the novel chapters after the drama completed the filming.
