I heard end of the year costume drama are not as popular. Maybe it's seasonal on China? But if they're avoiding rivals, this May is the best time. There's a bunch of upcoming BL next year. Remember Winner is King that was moved to 2022? Then there's Heaven Official's Blessing, Story of Bat, Guardians of the Land etc. Case in point, if they didn't make it this April or May, the momentum of the hype will drop.

Ah true, I'm just trying to look at it on a businessman's perspective who would like to milk as much profit as much as they can from this drama. Like they did with WOH actually? Since it's currently tending, they're milking it for all it's worth.

Airing a month earlier, WOH manage to steal the attention because of unexpected popularity. That's just my speculation though. Maybe they'll wait until WOH's popularity die down a bit. If they wait until next year, there will be EVEN MORE competition waiting.

That's my first thought too. I wasn't disappointed last April 9 because there's a postponement announcement from Caibao. I ended up looking browsing Youtube. I saw WOH in passing and played episode 1, I have no intention whatsoever on watching it because in my heart, Immortality will always be number one. But then I got engrossed and ended up watching 7 episodes in one sitting. Now here I am, days later, I'm quite satisfied.

First, what you said about the founding anniversary of China is definitely true. Around June or July, no costume drama is allowed. This is confirmed to me by one of the active HYX fan on youtube and twitter.
2nd, HYX already passed censorship last February. That's a confirmed fact. But there are rumors that they went through another one this April, hence the postponement. It's just a rumor though. But given all the not so subtle HYX advertisement the Chen Feiyu and Luo Yunxi had this month, you can guess that everything is pre planned. Like the RanWan themed commercials. It means the drama is really planned to air this April 15, but for some reason, they were forced to postpone it and we the fans are not sure if it really because of another censorship review.
3rd, a lot of people told me on Twitter and YouTube that you're no allowed to blatantly advertise BL drama (hence the subtle advertisements and no direct promotions) all BL trailers dropped the same day the first episode will air like The Untamed and Word of Honor. I heard WOH dropped trailed and aired 2 hours later.
4th, Winner is King is the one that didn't pass censorship and it's not due to the inappropriate scenes or anything. They said it's because the politics heavy plot of WIK is the thing that didn't pass censorship (I don't know how reliable this is though, but it's true that the Douban changed the airing date of Winner Is King to 2022, I saw the picture circulating on Twitter)
