1st, Most of people love romance 😍😍😍 If there is romance, more ppl will come and watch the dramas. Just look at the number of viewers among romance dramas. It's definitely larger and it's a fact.
2nd, the traffic popular actors and actresses also affected the number of viewers + rating here.
So, the cause of "low rating" is not because of serious heavy thriller story actually. If they can make traffic actors play the role as ML, the number of viewers will definitely increase. Shawn Duo is a well established actor, but not a traffic actor.
But I think 8.0/10 is still a decent rating, I think it will definitely increase after most of watchers here rate the completed drama.

I understand your post. Kill Me Love Me is a great drama. I have so many favorites chinese dramas. KMLM is definitely one of them. The chemistry is great, the story is good and fast paced + kissing scenes are hot 🤭 for me, there is no boring moments in 32 eps. KMLM had very intense eps with enemies to lovers theme. I really love it.
Don't listen to the negative reviews. It's just the novel fans that disappointed because the drama is not as darker as the novel. Murong Jinghe drama version is indeed the red flag, but not a black flag like in the novel. It's understandable though, if they follow the crazy tortures and how psycho the ML in the novel, they should make KMLM as short/mini dramas instead like Love & Bid Farewell. As full length drama, KMLM is already spicy with hot kisses, intense fighting, scheming, and fire chemistry between leads. As comparisons, Love & Bid Farewell is crazier because there is many forced kisses, manipulations, toxic relationships, rapes, pregnancy because of rapes, tortures, and FL lived as the hostage in ML residence.

Sometimes they used fake (property) horses for close up shots to actors face. But many chinese dramas nowadays still use real horses for close up shots especially if the actors are really good at riding horse.
If Tencent release the valentine materials tomorrow then the green light of this drama will be brighter than before.
This is a major drama. But it also suffers from scandals from important supporting role. Yes it's so sad but Tencent also need to play safe.

But as B+ level production, this drama is still very decent. The costumes, the sets, and the story are good and entertaining
