Sorry for the late response.

Your first question: When did XL or XY start to not allow them to be in a relationship and why?
Answer: The novel is mainly told from XY's point of view but chapter 13 and chapter 31 give insight into that. Here are some excerpts from those two chapters:

Chapter 13:

[ XY continued pouting and XL coldly humphed, and then he suddenly asked, "Why?"

XY knew exactly what he was asking -- why did she refuse to kiss him and would rather die? She pretended to be clueless, "Why what?"

*** Fast forward to XY's answer ***

XL stared at her and XY said, "Because I'm scared."
"It's scarier than death?"

XY thought about it and finally put it into words, "My brother, CX, he said one night when we were talking that I was still a girl who dreams. So...so...I'm scared that if I'm not careful, you'll walk into my dreams. And you..." XY shook her head, " You're someone who is never ever suitable to show up in a young girl's dreams. That might actually be scarier than death." ]

In this passage, she is basically saying that because of his background and the way that he is, no girl should fall in love with him and if she is not careful she will really fall in love with him. At this point in both the novel and show, XY is not in love with anyone. She is starting to fall in love though.

Now for Chapter 31 excerpt:

["During the ensuing seven days, Xiao Yao really did reconsider and think carefully. Every day she sat on the jagged rocks outside of the Dragon Bone Prison and looked out over the deep blue ocean.
When Ah Nian went to get her, she could see the blue horizon, the red rocks on the cliffs, and Xiao Yao dressed all in white sitting barefoot on the black jagged rocks as the waves crested at her feet.

This image was impossible to describe other than Ah Nian felt a sense of utter desolation for her sister. Xiao Yao's image made her think of the legends of old, of a fisherman's wife sitting on the rocks waiting for her lover to come back, sitting and waiting for so long she turned into a rock.

*Ah Nian calls out to her sister and asks her what she's thinking about Xiao Yao says "Nothing". Ah Nian responds by talking about the day she pushed her from the rocks. Then she asked Xiao Yao what she was doing there that day. Xiao Yao says she came to see a friend. She then asked if XL harrassed continued to harass her and XY shook her head. Then Ah Nian says she thought XL was pretty fascinating. XY looks back over the blue ocean and says nothing.*

*Seven days later since XL doesn't come for her, her wedding announcement is made and XL hears about it while he's drinking and discussing things. He then stands up with a smile and bids farewell to the people he is drinking with. He walks a bit along the streets of the western riverbanks. He stands at the edge of the river and stares out. Misty raindrops fall into his palm creating an icy mist around an ice crystal ball. There's a description of what's in the ice crystal etc*

At a glance, it appeared that they were holding hands but in truth, the ice crystal separated them. They were from two completely different worlds, they could never truly be together.]

There are many other chapters that showcase them not being able to be together for example chapters 24 and 29 are some. In these chapters, her grandfather and dad tell her she can't be with XL and that "Her bloodline made the choice for her".

I hope this gives some insight. I'd add more but this is already an extremely long response.

Also, sorry about the attacks. I think a lot of people are just super passionate about this show which can be a good/bad thing.

I've been trying to post stuff from the novel in all the discussion threads to showcase XY's relationship to CX, XL, and Jing but I never ended up adding anything to the Jing one because people already beat me to it haha. So I've just been a silent viewer.

AH, mparthur, Ari_Lee, and a couple of other users have been doing a great job adding passages and context from the novel as well as things occurring in the drama that give insight into the relationship XY has with CX, Jing, and XL.

Ohhh so she had to marry him in her place in the show? I do feel bad for her but since I like the female lead, I'm hoping she won't cause too many problems.

Have you guys seen the trailer of ep 20 with MZH's crazy sister? I'm wondering when that issue will present itself...Cause from the other trailers it doesn't seem like that will become a problem immediately. Any guess as to when?

This is not true. Neither Jing nor Xiang Liu were XY's second choices.

It is entirely possible for someone to love more than one person.

This is part of what I was talking about weeks ago about people who solo ship because a lot of y'all, whether it be Xiang Liu solo shippers, CX solo shippers, or Jing solo shippers, choose to leave out things that were described in the novel or shown in the show that benefits whatever ship you don't like.

TH has done a great job showcasing how much Jing, XL, and CX all mean to XY.

I'm not trying to be rude...I honestly don't know how else to say this without coming off as rude...so I apologize in advance but..from this comment, I slightly feel that you don't understand XL's character or the motivation for his actions.

I do agree that he would not endure it but that's because he was/will never allow the two of them to be in a relationship in the first place due to his responsibilities.

Every time XL and XY get close, he purposely does something to push her away and that is intentional. He would most likely turn her test against her as another way to push her away.

I agree with this. CX would have found a way especially when his grandpa was always planning on giving him the throne anyways. He just wanted CX to prove that he could keep what was given to him.

I have read the novel also and while she does say that that does not mean that her closeness to CX changed. It does not. That's why his betrayal sent her over the edge and caused her to commit suicide. She describes what CX did to her as being more painful than any form of torture she experienced because she never thought he could or would do something like that to her.

So no, in my opinion, him being her most important person does not change. It's just in the end she has other people in her heart and values them as well.

My personal take, feel free to disagree 😀 :

XY's love for XL does not stem from logic or reason so it's harder for her to draw lines with him. What I mean by that is, no matter how much she tries to fight the affection she has for him, at least in the novel, she always ends up losing.

As for not drawing the line, she does. XL does something in the novel to finally force XY to draw a line...she attempts to kill him but can't bring herself to and in the end just cuts off all ties which she later regrets.

I bring this up to say that honestly even if XL had kissed XY, while some things would have changed, many other things would not because of their fate. Her ending would have been the same as her mother's, heartache and death.

I do think that CX wanting what's best for XY and not wanting to limit her is a part of it. I agree that he also does not feel like he has the right to stop her from being with someone she loves.

But I didn't emphasis this same point with CX the way I did with Jing simply because CX holds more importance to XY than Jing does and he always has.

The two of them in the novel have been described as being super close and "viewing everyone else as outsiders". Even in the show, XY herself says that she would give up on Jing if he ever became CX enemy.

Since they are so close, he should have taken the chance to lay all his cards on the table including telling her about not feeling like he "had the right to stop her".

In my initial response I wasn't saying that CX should do everything to stop her from getting married but that he should have been honest with her about his feelings and then let her make the decision from there. That way at least he can live without regrets and not make grave mistakes.

The Xiyan King in the novel is related to her by blood. That's her grandpa. Her mother was his daughter who he loved very much. When he sent her to war, he did not know that the events that occurred (her using the sun power which "killed" her) would happen. In the drama, although XY's mom isn't his daughter, she was a disciple of his wife who he loved a lot and he viewed her as his own.

With the Hoaling King, his love for XY's mom runs very deep. Also, he did a lot of really messed up things that led XY and Xuan to lose their parents and end up in the situation they were in. For instance, even though XY's mom cut off her finger to ask him to help her brothers in the war he refused and they died as a result. There's a couple of other things too. But yea, it's mainly guilt and loving XY's mom a lot which is turn lead him to love XY as if she were his own daughter.

I try to keep an open mind when it comes to all the characters as they are all flawed and all do things that annoy me to no end.

I think the reason why some might be struggling with liking Jing though is because many people think that the hardships he is suffering could be easily solved if he grew a backbone or was willing to make more sacrifices.

And while I get that feeling because sometimes I feel that way (I go back and forth a lot between which characters annoy me tbh 🤣), as DramaAjumma pointed out a while back, XY is never willing to do the same for either Jing or XL in terms of making certain sacrifices yet she demands they do so in order to be with her and it's a bit...hypocritical.

🤣I figured. I'm sure they'll address this somewhat in s2 so see you then :)

Many people will have different interpretations of the reason why but here is my take based on what I've read and watched so far in the show:

1. Because he really wanted to let XY go since he knew he did not have the right to covert her but in the end, he could not accept her being with someone other than him especially when he knew that she did not love that person and probably never would. So personally, I don't think he was initially planning on stealing FL's bride. I feel like these complicated feelings coupled with XL's "sudden" appearance and remembering XY's promise/the loophole allowed him to work with XL to steal XY away.

2. All the characters in this show have moments of weakness. That was XL's. You can see in that scene that for a moment he really considered "wandering around".

3. Character flaw meaning that this is one of Jing's negative characteristics. When it comes to his family matters, he always uses completely different approaches than when it comes to dealing with other things. It's explained more in the novel why he's like this but it's mainly because he wants to end the cycle of hatred in his family and feeling that taking/making certain actions will make things worse.

He gave his blessing for Jing and XY's wedding when he did not want them to get married. Despite their grandpa giving the okay, if he knew he could not accept her getting married to someone else, he should have just been upfront about that. Then when it's just them, he can explain to her why he can't accept that. There's a part in the novel where he tries to remind her of when she said she'd marry him but she doesn't remember. In that instance, he could have told her what she said and confessed. Xuan has had so many chances to confess to XY in the novel but chickened out every time. It's honestly ridiculous. He "lost" XY forever because he was never upfront about his feelings for her until it was too late.

I like Xuan but honestly I feel like he's .... a coward? (not sure if this is the correct word) when it comes to XY. Novel spoiler down below for my reasoning why.
