I am a novel fan as well and i loved the first and second season and i am sure i will love the movie as well. An…
Yep, the second novel is extremely Hira focused. As a matter of fact, I think the only novel that really focuses on Kiyoi and his acting career is the third one. Utsukushii kare and Nikurashii kare are both Hira focused in my eyes.
The only thing I can even complain about this movie is that it's too short lmfao. Somehow in a very short span of time, they still managed to focus on all important details. Anna's problem, Hira's connection with Shirota(we saw them connect in the second season too), Kiyoi's anxiousness towards his acting career and Hira... they were all there.
I actually think it was actually a great idea to remove the fighting scene between HiraKiyo before Kiyoi's kidnapping. Because the series was different from the novels then it would really make no sense for adaptation!Kiyoi to be petty and actually expect Hira to go after him. Kiyoi has already realized that he needs to be direct with Hira. It was literally his monologue in the last episode of season 4. I know some people would've wanted Kiyoi angst, but Kiyoi being mature and actually show his growth is more important to me.

You are another recent account who has given utsukare a bad rating and a high rating to Jack O'frost. Are you guys from the same circle? What's your intention?
First of all, why does having 10 episodes makes something a negative? lol. I was mainly comparing season 1 of utsukare to Jack O'frost. If you include season 2 of utsukare then it's just game over for Jack O'frost. I made a comparison between only season 1 of utsukare with Jack o'Frost to make it fair for you.
Your argument about Jack O'Frost applies a lot more to utsukare. Yes it is totally realistic for characters to not just solve their issues immediately but an acknowledgement is a step forward. For utsukushii kare, you have Hira who puts Kiyoi on a pedestal and Kiyoi who has a very hard time expressing himself to the point that he cannot even successfully say "I love you" as an actor. By the end of season 1, not only Kiyoi makes sure to tell Hira to not put him on a pedestal because he is a mere "human" but it's also Kiyoi who ends up confessing, twice.
Did they solve their issues? Absolutely not but the show obviously was aware of the main conflict between it's characters.
Jack O'frost? The show sounded like it just wanted to have a drama without thinking too much about the core issue. The main characters both had flaws but even by the end of 6 episodes, it was never really mentioned in any type of way other than maybe Fumiya speaking up a little.
I enjoy Japanese dramas in general and if people like something and dislike what I like it's cool but utsukare is arguably way more though out that Jack O'frost. Jack O'frost really sounded like it just wanted conflict for the sake of drama and Ritsu remembered everything for the sake of the plot rather than something they really thought about in general while in utsukare most of the words and actions of the character matter.
So only season 1 of utsukare is better than Jack O'frost without even needing to bring up season 2.

"the story telling/flow is a little weak compared to Jack βOβ Frostβ¦and they had 2 seasons to really make it the bomb."
I respect your opinion but it's completely other way around.
First of all, utsukare season 1 only has 6 episodes just like Jack o'Frost and actually I think Jack o'Frost happens to have slightly longer episodes. If you combine both seasons of utsukare, you'll realize it's only 10 episodes which is still much lesser than most popular bl out there.
The ending of Jack o'frost was rushed, the characters remembered everything out of plot convenienc and they learned absolutely nothing by the end. Ritsu never pays attention to things around him and Fumiya keeps everything bottled inside until he loses his temper but it was never actually addressed or worked on in the entire show. I can only give Fumiya some props for talking more freely I guess
In comparison, utsukare did this almost perfectly. The ending of utsukare season 1, was not a happy one for the sake of being happy. It was basically an acknowledgement of their issues. Kiyoi and Hira didn't and couldn't suddenly change their entire dynamic but they still addressed the main problem and tried to move forward.
We see more of this in season 2 as Kiyoi has really grown to learn and communicate much better but Hira's insecurities are too deep for him. But even if you exclude season 2 entirely, the first season of utsukare stands at least a head and a shoulder above Jack o'Frost in terms of writing .
(My spoiler free review) I watched this and the previous season back to back and I don't want to rate this drama because of how disappointed I was and I don't want to potentially drive people away by giving it a low rating.
One of the things that I personally really care about in a "sequel" is that it should actually look like a continuation of the previous story instead of looking like a new story and forgetting all the elements of the previous and all the character developmental that happened.
The first season of this drama was not necessarily the best romance that I have seen, quite the contrary in fact the romance isn't good, but it was one of the most "interesting" ideas that I've seen in any romance. First season showed me obsession and being addicted to what you don't have. Colors can be addictive and I never thought about it until color rush. The first season was mysterious and full of colors that looked magical and it had a good plot twist at the end which made me understand the actions and obsession from the second lead.
This season has non of those elements. Introducing a new character to the story and suddenly getting rid of the previous guy with an apparent time skip at the very beginning of the story, this sequel focuses on trying to solve the puzzles and mysteries from the first season. This sequel looks less like a sequel and more like a new story with the same main character and the same settings. It has non of the interesting elements of the previous story and it has a different genre. Instead of being mysterious and colourful with a slight focus on obsession (with colors) this sequel mostly focuses on bullying and drama. The main character seems like a different person in the sequel instead of the same character who grew up in the previous and the problems are entirely different . Unlike the first season, this sequel doesn't give people much room to think about stuff and just rushes to solve things . It doesn't even have any plot twists the way the first season did.
I think if you want to enjoy this sequel, you have to forget what you "liked" about the first season and think of this sequel as a new story which has a lot of angst in it instead of magic and mystery. If you manage to do that you might actually find this enjoyable but a fair warning, even as a new story, the pacing of this sequel is rushed due to it being only 8 episodes and 15 minutes each.
OK someone who I replied to deleted their comment and I kind of feel bad about it eventually I don't think I did anything wrong
Guys I swear your opinions are valid even if they are negative. We are just passionate fans who like to talk and give our insights. That doesn't mean that you aren't allowed to talk.
This is exactly why I think Koyama was a mistake. He shouldn't have even existed. He represents nothing and adds nothing to the story and Koyama fans suddenly start thinking that hating on Kiyoi , is going to make Koyama relevant.
Lmao fr tho he even was like this dude doesn't stand a chance dating me ever even tho he was already hella attracted…
Why is comparing Hira and Kiyoi becoming a trend?
I disagree. Hira doesn't try to keep a distance. He simply doesn't think he has a chance. The entire first 3 episodes we see Hira trying to follow Kiyoi around, stare at him, even take pictures of him and even tell him that he likes him. Kiyoi's reaction was far more normal. He wanted to get closer to Hira out of curiosity but couldn't communicate so he was being cunning. The idea that Kiyoi initiated everything when Hira has always been following him around and staring at him is just wrong
I feel this was a really good drama because the way they used the romance in this drama was psychological. Maybe…
Good insights. This series is adapted from a novel and the novel is listed as psychological. Obviously it's a part of both Hira and Kiyoi's character.
I admit that I have no idea what limerence is but we have already seen Hira's reaction to losing Kiyoi or Hira getting jealous because he thought Kiyoi was in a relationship with another guy. He doesn't do much about it. He tries to be as respectful as possible even if it hurts him. This series does have a second novel which I never read but from what I hear , Hira and Kiyoi have a healthy relationship although Hira still has his bad habits which annoys Kiyoi sometimes and causes issues because as you mentioned , it's not exactly easy to get rid of someone's problems by just talking. But overall , they aren't bad or unhealthy. I've actually heard that Kiyoi is more of the jealous lover than Hira but Kiyoi isn't bad either.
1_ Hira doesn't stay like that. He grows by the end of the show2_ getting bullied to the point that you don't…
I respect your opinion. I really do .
I also wish we could see Hira differently at one point or two. But I feel like that's the point. Hira's behaviour is meant to annoy the audience so you can understand Kiyoi's feelings. Even Koyama pointed it out. Hira definitely needs to gain a lot more confidence . Sadly Years of bullying can not just be reversed in a short amount of time. Hira suddenly changing just makes it unrealistic. I am still glad that he managed to beat his bullies at that one point at least.
About the novels, I haven't read them either actually. I've been spoiled . I honestly thought it was obvious that Hira was bullied from the start because of his stuttering issues. He said it a couple of times in the show and he acted like he was completely familiar with getting bullied all the time.
1_ Hira doesn't stay like that. He grows by the end of the show2_ getting bullied to the point that you don't…
1_ Hira was bullied first, then lost all his self esteem. This is a show and all but if this was real then you calling a kid "toxic" because he was bullied and saying that he "chose to be bullied " or it's nothing less than chosing to be bullied because he doesn't have enough self esteem to fight back is equivalent of "victim blaming"
2_Actually Hira starts gaining confidence both with help from Kiyoi and without it. By the time he left highshool he was so much better than he used to be and still it's very hard to change years of bullying. Regardless of that , I don't understand how that's a bad thing for Kiyoi to point it out for him .
Americans are the ones who go around shooting up high schools and yet they judge a culture like Japan that has…
I am not american. I imagine shooting people out of anger all the time. For me, it's nothing but imagination. I have only ever seen a gun in video games and movies and that's how they are to me. Imagining a gun for me is like imagining myself using magic.
Whether you Americans can understand it or not is not my problem. Or Japan's problem.
Sorry but I disagree with you. If showing character flaws and anything that is slightly off to the norms of society…
Look who's talking lol
Your brilliant answer to everything I said was "why do you care" and now you came with the worst possible arguments .
Who cares if people call it toxic? I care obviously. Because they are wrong and because this is a discussion. You can't go around just using the word toxic without expecting people to engage in your discussion.
If you bothered reading any of my comments you would know that I never attacked anyone for saying their opinion but I am allowed to say mine and mine is that, it is in fact a baseless accusation to call an entire show toxic only because you don't like the character flaws and the dynamics. I am allowed to talk just as anyone. And OP did in fact, say that people are downplaying toxicity which is not true. I don't see the toxicity whether you like it or not. That's blaming people for what they didn't do.
lol at your last sentence, maybe you should learn to either read the comments or simply don't jump in others discussions without even reading them. You seem to have no idea what the discussions around here even used to be and what I am (or OP is) even talking about. That's on you. You try too hard to call me out for being upset over an opinion (which I wasn't, I disagreed with the comment stating my reasons) but apparently the fact that this comment got someone like me disagreeing with it bothered you a lot more .
It was a jab at the fact that literally every single Japanese drama and bl on MDL has a very low ranking in comparison to dramas from other countries.
I apologise if I made you upset. That wasn't my intention. I am just frustrated with MDL and how it rates their dramas
Utsukushii kare and Nikurashii kare are both Hira focused in my eyes.
