Yup, this is not some "realistic" style drama either, it is an idol modern type romance drama, this type of ending doesn't elevate the genre of the drama nor make it stand out like what the scriptwriter probably thought it did happen.

I think BE (bad ending) dramas can be written really well if there is logic and build up to it, but this drama's scriptwriter seems to force the BE for no reason. There is no "lesson" nor "greater worldview" for this kind of storytelling in this drama.
Chen Xingxu deserves better scripts. This drama is the epitome of talented actors in the C-industry not being able to get good scripts/used to promote other actors/actresses instead.
It is a sad reality for these actors/actresses when they have no backing/sponsors and don't buy into the whole traffic culture, but this is the end result. At least he has another drama with Reba to air and that drama might treat him better.

I think so too, Wei Zhao is a great character to have acted as an actor, I am sure he felt accomplished too.
I also think the overall atmosphere of this drama filming was done well enough where there aren't any complex feelings about it (everyone got along). Often times, a drama might leave a sour taste with how the production/other cast members act during filming/promo. There are always cases of actors/actresses fighting over name credit order, over popularity, etc.

Yes, the rumored actress was Ma Sichun but something happened where she dropped out, and Li Landi basically was casted in an emergency situation. Based on her weak resources, she would not have been able to touch a script/drama like that if it hasn't been for that chance. Her Yetan role was almost taken back then by Tian Xiwei when Landi was already doing the pre-filming one month training with the production/cast and TXW was just a newbie back then (but with a decent backing) 💀.
Landi and Wang Yang has like an age gap of 22+ years (and they even acted as dad/daughter on an acting variety show before) but their acting really saved it and got people to ship them like no tomorrow.

She was a baby back then (18 years old when she filmed it) and she just started college then. That drama was just super bad timing for her because Tang Ren (her company) was about to lose the copyright of that drama so needed to rush to film and they basically rushed her to film it when she just finished her Gaokao & didn't have the time to manage her weight.
She was also super stressed at the time, and she had to keep flying back and forth between school and the filming of that drama because the acting college she went to doesn't allow them to film the first 2 years when school is in session (only when they had breaks) so that drama was filmed really quickly when her school was on break. In an interview, she even said she barely ate to try to lose the weight + ran daily/did ton of exercises, but she was so stressed out too that it ended up not working at all.
She was massively dragged for that drama on the C-side back then for her weight (part of it was also black marketing since she was already a threat with her acting with the acknowledgment she got from "My Huckleberry Friends" + "Never Gone" + an acting variety show she was on) and it didn't live up to the hype of "Scarlet Heart" with the script. But yeah, her company really screwed her over with that drama. But I am glad she overcame it, and she is doing better and better now.

No problem! This drama is destined for a BE regardless just based on the Chinese title and in a way, all of their fates were set since their birth. Wei Zhao being the Yue Luo City Lord's son can't escape this fate. It just so happens he met the love of his life before his ending that allowed him to have some happiness in life.
Their personal endings might be BE, but they all bettered the world, and the rest of Yue Luo and Liang State will now be better than ever.

Haha the glow is meant to show "his spirit" is watching over them essentially. He is /dead/ for sure (the ashes, him being crushed by those pillars, etc.). But Jiang Ci can "sense" him being there at the house he built for her aka he is gone but waiting at that house because he is her home.

That drama actually did really well in China in terms of TV rating, it was #1 back when it aired. It was also nominated/won some pretty legit China awards so it definitely got acknowledged for sure. And Landi's ship with Wang Yang blew up over there too LOL (which also caused people to be extremely upset when they became open-ended).
That drama made Landi one of the few 95-99 gen actresses with an achievement of over 1+% TV rating. I think she was the second one of her gen to achieve that.
International side yeah, that drama isn't really an "idol-romance" drama so it is not really to people's taste here but it definitely showed Landi's acting range and the different genres she can do.

She is just amazing. I don't know if you had watched her Li Mujia role in "All the Way to the Sun" but her ability to adjust her acting from a character in their 20s to then in their later 30s... She is so impressive and just keeps getting better every single year.

You can like Yetan's character better but objectively, Li Landi's acting here has improved even more especially her vocalization during scenes that required her to raise her voice and "scream". In TSL, her dialogues during the scene when QingKui died was not as clear and it was something she noticed herself and has since worked on and mastered (as seen in the scene with the emperor).
Jiang Ci's character requires more inward acting with more micro expressions (while Yetan is more outward). So, it might seem like she is "acting" more with Yetan but Jiang Ci's character actually requires more acting skills IMO (it is more "reality" based).
But Li Landi is already way far ahead than actresses in her gen because Yetan is a pretty hard character to act (needs to be "naughty" but not to the point where her facial expressions are all over the place). Jiang Ci is not an easy character to act either because it is very easy for this character to come off as straight up pure "saint" in the beginning or "annoying" since she acted as a foil against the ML. She really gave this character life, and the audience can believe someone like Jiang Ci actually exists.
RJL added this drama to his representative works on Weibo (he hasn't added another one since "One and Only" back in 2021) which just shows how good this drama did.
LoN also currently rank 30th on Tencent's Annual List and yes this is a big deal. This list takes in consideration of all the drama, variety shows, animation, etc. that Tencent had released throughout the years (some of the other dramas on the list are like "Joy of Life"). So this drama did REALLY well especially for a S ranked drama (Tencent's top dramas are usually S+) and lackluster promo. Tencent probably made banks off of this drama LOL.
All ratings posted prior to airing are "invalid" on Douban so thay should have no effect :)
I saw but these same people went back on Douban to rate 1-star again. 💀 There was an increase in 1-stars too even after the drama ended so the black marketing push is definitely not over yet. Though fans have been fighting back for sure to try to at least maintain the current rating.
