Ending has another callback to a super early episode:
When Wei Zhao told his comrades to burn the bodies of fellow Yue Luo people's corpses into ashes because it did be easier to bring them back to Yue Luo... and how he turned to ashes in the end so that Jiang Ci too can bring him back to their home.
I am quite reluctant to watch this drama because I am not Allen Ren's fan, as I have always been let down by his…
Do watch, I think RJL did good in this drama. I think it helped that this cast in general have some really great actors/actresses, so they were able to bring out each other's best abilities.
Jeremy did great here too, and he actually had a lot of scenes, so I did say to watch it even if it is just for him.
Thinking how in an alternative universe if the current emperor was dead 20 years ago:
Prince Qi takes the throne; Jiang Ci becomes a princess. Liang State and Yue Luo have a peace alliance. Xiao Wuxia is set to become the next City Lord. I can see Jiang Ci and Xiao Wuxia having an arranged marriage to bring Liang State and Yue Luo even closer. And they too in this alternative universe, fall for each other. But at least this time, they will have a long and happy lives.
Wei Zhao from the beginning had always wanted to clear his father's name. It was his main purpose. He felt isolated from Yue Luo as a whole because back when his father was labeled a traitor, majority of the Yue Luo people turned their backs against the Xiao family. Because of that, he had always had mixed emotion about Yue Luo. That was the place he swore he did become the next city lord to protect and be a hero to. However, the people of this land abandoned him (except for a few). Viewers can see this especially when he was in Yue Luo and how he looked gloomy most of the time he was there.
At the very end, he realized the lesson his father was trying to teach him. It is not about being a hero, sometimes it is about ensuring your action will lead to peace. Yes, Wei Zhao could have cleared his father's name, but this would have led to more Yue Luo people dying. He had to then weight, was clearing his father's name more important than even more Yue Luo people dying?
He made the decision to rewrite the story the emperor was trying to write. The story is Wei Zhao betrayed the emperor and no one else (Yue Luo) was involved. Even though the Xiao's family's name wasn't "clear" in public, the Yue Luo people does know now, and the name Xiao + Xiao Wuxia will live on as their savior.
In terms of Liang state, Wei Zhao doesn't really care about them to begin with to care if they think his father was a traitor or not, he had always been more concerned with what Yue Luo thinks because that was their home.
And in Liang state, the rumor of emperor killing Prince Qi already spread so I am sure a lot of the public already thinks the "truth" pushed what happened 20 years ago might not be the actual truth. And with the crown prince (who became the emperor) pardoning Yue Luo and rebuilding a relationship with Yue Luo, that action ultimately gives more evidence that Yue Luo/Xiao family were the victims. The truth might not be spoken, but most of the people know deep down. And perhaps, that is justice too.
I have a question. Why is that when Ci received the red flower, the messenger says that they are engaged? I thought…
In Yue Luo, Jiang Ci said she was Xiao Wuxia's wife to protect Wei Zhao. Both treated it seriously at that point despite it being a short-term measure back then.
Both had their hearts set for each other regardless of the conflicts they had with each other. In Jiang Ci's eyes, Wei Zhao is the one for her and she made her decision back in Yue Luo so no regrets. Same with Wei Zhao, he already decided she did be his only wife.
Side note: Li Landi mentioned that filming some of these intense scenes led to her having low grade fever (she basically got really into acting these scenes). After this drama, she then went on to film "Filter" with Tan Jianci (which leans toward more comedy + romance). Her last couple of dramas were all either OE or straight up BE and it seems like those dramas drained her a lot emotionally.
-It was likely that Jiang Ci knew Wei Zhao was poisoned as she started tearing up when she saw WZ's hands trembling…
When the hair is tied up in a bun aka their hair has been "raised". It means only their husband would be able to untie their hair. Someone on C-side also pointed out that since meeting Jiang Ci, Wei Zhao has "raised" hair too (instead of his hair being down as often like in the beginning) which can also mean he subconsciously saw himself as taken too (by her) thus also tied his hair up.
The flower they used to represent the Lingjiu flower is called 马θΉθ² (Calla Lily/Arum Lily). Another name for this flower is ζ ε§θ± (Ci Gu Hua). The same Ci as Jiang Ci.
