Title The Wanted Detective Spoiler
I understand Tong Shuang and why he became Yesha. But I’m not going to lie when I say that it’s a disappointment…
Love reading posts like this one. It truly shows the plot and characters were well-written. My two cents about some of the things you mention, or well my POV.

"I understand Tong Shuang and why he became Yesha. But I’m not going to lie when I say that it’s a disappointment in his entire reasoning. I get that he is trying to avenge the people of Haiya."
-> For me that is not his main reason for what he did. This was more of a justification/excuse to make himself feel better.

In reality he was bitter to the world for the way he was treated and he felt hate that he ended up in such an unfortunate situation where he was bullied, beaten, hungry especially compared to his brother that even if he didn't have the best childhood, he was raised with care and love. That's why he framed him after all, he wanted him to be miserable like he was.

Tong Shuang's character reminded me of that saying that goes like "instead of turning the knife towards himself, he turned it to the world".

If Bei Hai did not seek fame and created the pill, do you think the chaos of Haiya would have existed?! Bei Hai was the root cause of the what happened in Haiya. Granted, the actions of everyone else after that helped escalated the situation, but I feel that Bei Hai took the coward way out and let everyone else take the fall.

-> I disagree to a certain point.
Was it truly only his fault for creating the pill?
Besides the fact that he didn't know the consequences, Bei Hai was just an everyday person with some serious capabilities. The one who was truly greedy was the emperor that chose to listen to him for the "greater good" of his empire. He ordered him to make more pills so he could use them on his people. If we see it in a more extreme way, scientists made the atomic bombs, but were they the only evil ones or were the ones that chose to drop them more evil?

Just because someone is responsible of making something, doesn't necessarily mean he's evil. The one choosing to use it in an evil way is the true villain. A knife can be used in different ways, you can use it to cook but also to kill.

About Bei Hai he chose to die, what else was he supposed to do? Even if he went to the emperor, he would just be excecuted. Even if he didn't he still would be excecuted.
He also found a way to make the next generation know what happened in Haiya, cause the "soldiers" chose to massacre everyone to hide what truly took place, even innocent people that managed to survive.

For me they were more evil than him, cause they chose to protect the emperor and the "fame" of the empire, instead of saving the innocents that had already watched their families die. Yes they saved some young children, but killed their entire families.

Whatever the reason, it is sad overall. Many innocent people died at the hands of Yesha and what happened in Haiya. -> I agree...

I believe that if it was reversed, I don’t think XBM would turn evil at all. He was on the run for 3 years and not once did he resort to evil. He may not have suffered at the hands of Madam Tong, but he did suffer nonetheless.

-> I've had an entire debate about this and even though I don't disagree, I don't agree either.
I don't think anyone should judge how they would turn into if they were hypothetically in a specific situation.

That was what bothered me quite a lot in the final speech Bei Ming had with "Tong Shuang". He was sure he wouldn't turn the same, but for me you can't know how you would turn out if you grow up under different circuimstances.

Bei Ming grew up loved and people around him cared about him. He didn't have to worry about food and clothing and he wasn't relentlessly bullied and abused. On the other hand, besides everything else, Bei Kun only had a dog that loved him and he loved and they killed and eat it...
That's too much for anyone to take, especially a child.

Bei Ming also managed to develop a "justice sentiment" because of him growing in the Unit and his work and because of the better circuimstances he grew up in.
Experiences and idiosyncrasy play a huge part in how someone will "turn out" and even though the current Bei Ming is ethical and righteous and he didn't go berserk after what happened to him (cause the justice sentiment that was the core of his personality had already been created), we can't know if the result would be the same if he grew up differently.

Of course, he may not have turned into a mass murderer, maybe he would chose justice under all circuimstances, but we can't know cause he never had the same experiences as Bei Kun. And no person has the exact same experiences as someone else. We can just speculate how he would turn out.

Even if other children of Haiya suffered, maybe their circuimstances were different or maybe they didn't have the opportuinty to "avenge". Even the fake beggar that went through shit, chose a different path, but why? Like Bei Kun he also chose to run away from his tormentors and he wanted a simple life.

I think in Bei Kun's case, besides his idiosyncrasy and experiences that made him choose that path, the fact that he knew about the existence of his brother made the situation even worse. After he killed the dog he was long gone and he only felt a tiny bit of warmth in this new team and I believe that is why he didn't chose to kill them, when he could have, like Bei Ming said.

But about the whole "justice prevails" thing Bei Ming said, I found it hypocrticial cause one he wouldn't know how he would turn out and two is justice just for everyone to know about the massacre and what happened in Haiya? What about all the innocents that died and the emperor that can't be truly punished?
Plus, it was also a censorship tool like all series in this genre, where justice must always win and there must be an extra long speech about it.

Generally, I found him a very well written villain and actor did a great job. Even though I don't justify his actions, I understand his psyche and why he acted like that and I think he's one of the best villains I have seen in quite a long time.

𝒯𝐻𝐸 𝒲𝒜𝒩𝒯𝐸𝒟 𝒟𝐸𝒯𝐸𝒞𝒯𝐼𝒱𝐸 - 𝐹𝐼𝒩𝒜𝐿 𝒯𝐻𝒪𝒰𝒢𝐻𝒯𝒮

✅ Cinematography/Director/Production quality
✅ Acting
✅ OST
✅ Characters -> equally significant, no one was there just for décor, felt like every character was a lead
✅ Female Characters -> smart, strong and important to the plot
✅ Romance -> Subtle and well-executed
✅ Warmed-up to all characters
✅ Bei Ming and Tong Shuang served some serious visuals, along with some other characters 🤭🔥🥵
✅ Plot -> well-written, connected
✅ Got better and better as it progressed and was even more 🔥 after episode 20
✅ Entertaining
✅ Antagonists -> well-written and great to watch
✅ Crime scenes
✅ The team
✅ CGI -> It may not have been perfect, but it was pretty good
✅ Has a bit of everything (and it works) -> mystery, action, drama, comedy, romance, bromance, sismance and multiple other fantastic relationships between different characters

✔️ Zhang Nan as Huo Dai Rong -> Liked her a lot at first, then didn't that much, then I liked her again (both acting and character-wise)
✔️ I wasn't that into second "romance" storyline at first, felt a bit sudden
✔️ Some exaggerations plot-wise, but I didn't care...

❌ Terrible poster
❌ Too many flashbacks at some points
❌ Never forgiving them for that one scene
✖️ Some censorship bullshit, but well it's insignificant

🔥All in all, a solid investigation drama from beginning to end, with some pretty great and equally important characters.

This is mostly a rant so please don't read if you loved this one.

✅ First 20 episodes -or so- were great.

✅ The series does a good job at portraying different cases of trafficking and how they affect the victims (both the ones that were trafficked but also the people close to them).

✅ Characters are generally well written and I liked how most cases were more on the realistic side of things, and didn’t have an actual happy ending even if victims were saved.

Unfortunately, after the first 20 eps the series keeps going downhill.

❌ We had the typical "trust the system" things that all of these dramas have (cause of censorship)

❌ There were some overly dramatic things that had no reason of existence and were added to the series mostly to make it more dramatic.
=> Ms Zhangs Alzheimer's for example was mostly used as a plot tool to make some things move forward. She tended to remember when the script said so and kept forgetting at times when it was useful script-wise. It also felt like a cheap plot tool to make the viewer sad, thinking that maybe she wouldn't remember her daughter if she ever returned.

❌ Last few eps were quite underwhelming, with a pretty rushed and frankly bland ending.
And no, I don't think there was a need for overdramatic reunions, But when you spend so much time in a series on Ms Zhang's story, Ran Ran etc, I expected something better than seeing Ran Ran for three seconds, especially when in most cases we got a deep understanding of the people being trafficked.

❌ They cut lots of things from the series something that undermined the great efforts they put on the first half.
=> Ms Zhangs restaurant.
We got introduced to many characters that were searching for their loved ones. They were actually supporting characters and not guest roles appearing in one episode or something.
Then suddenly we get informed they found their children/loved ones out of nowhere.
It was like they edited out their entire cases, cause the first few episodes focused a lot on the victims so there is no way the writing got such a huge downgrade later on.

==>For example we find out about a woman suddenly finding her child and going to meet him and then nothing. They threw at us that info and they didn't bother showing anything else.

==>Even "Fa Fa" that was bonding with Chang Rui suddenly disappeared from the plot and she appeared again in the last episode for her happy ending that also felt extremely unrealistic and out of literally nowhere.

First half -> quite well written in terms of showing on screen cases that are based on real life + They took extra effort to write dialogues and "reactions" of characters that were realistic. Heartbreaking and made me cry multiple times.

Second half -> draggy and fast paced at the same time + Characters introduced were boring to watch + They didn't give the adequate time for the story to breathe -> Cases felt underwhelming and not emotionally impactful. Made me roll my eyes.

Lastly, the series didn't dare to actually deal with one of the main reasons children are trafficked, which is sexual exploitation. We can say that it was implied (was it?), but that's it.

Plus I found it pretty unbelievable that some of the traffickers remembered what they did with some of their victims. Most traffickers because they traffic quite a few people and see them as goods and not actual human being they can't recollect info.

Also, even though it is implied, it would be nice for the series to highlight that there were many victims they didn't find, cause in reality the trafficked people that are actually discovered are not many and the "dark figure" of trafficking victims is probably huge. Instead, it felt like they found everyone they were looking for, but I suppose it may makes sense since most victims were connected with the same traffickers.

CONCLUSION
=== I appreciate the effort and the fact that this based on real cases, but at the end of the day this is also a series that needs to be coherent and well-executed in all aspects and this one lacked in quite a few aspects===

This was a very well done series from beginning to end and it got better and better as eps progressed. It's one…
I particularly liked the scene where Beiming and Xueman went to that dungeon.

They both knew it was dangerous. When they coughed up blood and Xueman was weaker there was no shouting, overprotectiveness, savior ML.

They both knew they went there for a specific purpose and they had no time to waste on anything else. I need more romances like this where characters are equally capable and know where their priorities lie.

This was a very well done series from beginning to end and it got better and better as eps progressed.

It's one of the few series that was good from the get go and got so much better each episode.

It's very well written in general and the production quality is great.

I liked many things, but I want to focus mostly on two.

One is that every character was important and felt significant. They weren't there just for decor. They all had their own stories and their own strengths and weaknesses.

The second one is that even though there was romance it was subtly portrayed something I truly appreciated. No overdone things, no savior ML protecting weak FL, no romance suddenly being more important that everything else. I like how all characters put the investigation in priority and they are all capable to defend themselves.
