The editing for Generation for Generation wasn't great but at least the story was consistent and coherent, even though I still preferred the novel ending. But at least they laid enough pipe that the show ending made sense for the characters as they were presented in the show. Which is why ultimately Generation to Generation worked. I thought that initially but then the scene that they show during the wedding where the ML stops Gu Zhao Xi's carriage before it is attacked does not make sense. So by the time Gu Zhao Xi's carriage is attacked the ML is the one in it and he is the one put into the pit. And Wenshuang does not actually see what happens to the person in the pit, he walks away.
The person with the scar could be Gu Zhao Xi, in which case he is dead. Or he could be a fake, and the real Gu Zhao Xi could be safe somewhere, in which case it is an even happier ending. It's unclear.
