She’s not yet at a point where she can accept what happened and allow herself to be happy. She’s still overwhelmed by anger and guilt, and she needs to confront and work through those feelings with full awareness.

This period of separation is necessary for the writer to take PJ through the process of integrating her painful past, coming to terms with the promises she made, and ultimately choosing to stand by the man she loves.

I know Republican era dramas are often expected to stick fairly close to historical events because that period was such a major turning point in China’s history. But the show has really emphasized how reluctant CX is to join the central government in its fight against the revolutionary army, which eventually takes power in China. He wants what’s best for the people, and Jin will help carry on Ming Xuan’s dream through Chang Xuan.

All these little details make me wonder if the writer is hinting that CX might get to return after the final battle and reunite with Ping Jun and their child, leaving his life as a warlord behind. In these last few episodes, they’ve really shown CX losing his thirst for power and wanting nothing more than to serve the people

I know. But they’ve changed so much from the novel. They’ve given us one of the best redemption arcs for a red-flag ML, with so much character growth, so killing him off at the end just wouldn’t make sense from a storytelling perspective. I’m talking about character development and how it serves the story here.

I know what the leaked script says, but after 32 episodes of CX’s character growth, Yu Ming Xuan’s sacrifice, and all the hints that Chang Xuan genuinely cares about the people, it would make no sense for him to die without getting his happy ending with Ping Jun and their child

If you don’t like the ML, it might be hard for you to keep watching. The story is told from his POV, and you’ll see him make some big mistakes, but you’ll also see him grow, redeem himself, and become a better person without losing who he is.

During the tram scene, my stomach dropped when the tram passed between them, leaving her on one side of the street and Chang Xuan on the other. She was holding the baby doll, which felt like a metaphor for her and their child. It felt almost like a premonition. I’m going to be just as delulu as CX and say that, even though the scene scared me, I think there’s still a chance that after she waits for him through the war and the revolution, he’ll cross that distance to reunite with his family 😭

It can’t be more emotionally devastating than The White Olive Tree… well, actually, it can, because Cheng Lei is the ML. 😂😭 But I’ve already been through one heartbreaking ending that left me in a deep funk for about three weeks, so I’ll get through this one too if it ends sadly.

When I started watching this drama, I already knew a sad ending was a possibility, and I still hit play. I know what to expect from Republican era C-dramas. And as for whether I’d stop watching dramas if that happened, no, I wouldn’t.
