Netflix is the worst about this. Thankfully on Viki, they use fan subs and I feel like they are generally better…
I agree with you 100%. I felt my intelligence insulted during Untamed on NF because they kept calling Yanli big sister but NF put in her name. It really takes a viewer out of the moment to have such a technical translation in such dramatic scenes. I'm so glad I'm not alone in these thoughts.
Love this article. One of my biggest translation angst is when the Chinese or Korean characters call others brother or sister (oppa, hyung, jie, uni, gege, etc) and the translators use the name of the character instead. I actually find it rather sweet that they have these type of nicknames they call each other.
I think there is more to the story when using the terms older or younger brother or sister. And I have co-opted the word Oppa and use it in my own vernacular whether my English speaking friends understand it or not.
My very 1st Kdrama I ever watched was Falling for Innocence and I had SLS for Lee Joon Hee from the 1st episode. Well anyone who has seen that show knows how quickly that became heart breaking.
