Thank you for sharing this. Cheng Lei is really phenomenal. So far for me his best performance was in „Footprints of change“ but this here even tops that because the role here is even more challenging and he nails every aspect of the character. No one would root for only a cold obsessive scheming character but he manages to show his playful and tender side, his lost and wounded side, his fears, doubts, caring for others …

She is! Rotten to the core.

This is not a happy days drama. The era, the title, the plot, the themes - everything screams dark and sad things ahead.

Agreed. She’s pretty and very ethereal and good at portraying that pure and innocent character without seeming child-like, but her acting feels flat in the emotional scenes.
But hats off to Cheng Lei, he‘s brilliant!

I said it’s not a justification. Also I was looking for an explanation for the change in behaviour compared to ep11&12, not for the forced kisses. And I do not blame her. I just find her behaviour towards him also a bit problematic. From the beginning she scolded, confronted, slapped him (in public and just because of her bias towards him which then turned out to be even wrong), chose closeness when she wanted something from him and distance when she wanted nothing to do with him. From the beginning she did whatever came to her mind. She acted as though they were close, because honestly which stranger would act and talk like that to a person of power in those times in a realistic setting? It’s fiction. And within this fictional context I found an explanation for the change in his behaviour.

He‘s broken, extremely disappointed and angry at the same time. That she came to beg for SML‘s freedom was already audacious, but that she still wanted to marry that man, a spy who committed treason and who had no qualms to draw her into this by marrying her - this is what drove YCX over the edge. Apart from that, she never clearly drew a line between them. She kept saying they should have no contact but kept going to him. She scolded him, slapped him, anything that just came to her mind, but at the same time she expected him to stay put and do just as she wanted. Also she gave him mixed signals. This shouldn’t excuse his behaviour in the car but it’s some explanation.

At first I was wondering why YCX was so different in today’s episode in the car scene from how we have seen him in episodes 11 and 12.

Sml is a lying slimy ugly and weak man. He’s hiding a very ugly character. On top of that he left her and her mum alone for years to study abroad. In times like those! He would be the last man on earth I would choose. I‘m all team ML but otherwise I‘d think Ruiteng or the theatre director would be safe choices.
