Two things you should know about me before reading the rest of my post.1. My husband was killed by a woman who…
First, I'm sorry that you lost someone that you loved in a totally preventable way.

Second, I'm appalled at the things people said to you after your husband died. It's no wonder people drive drunk if they have so little awareness of the dangers.

Third, many people have never driven drunk just because they know they could kill/injure someone or themselves.

Fourth, thank you for being so real and doing something to educate. I wish driving while intoxicated were punished more severely in the US (where I'm from, too). It's sickening to see people getting second, third and fourth chances instead of having their licenses taken away the first time they are caught. I really don't know why we prioritize people who have committed a crime over possible innocent victims.

I don’t think this has anything to do with chauvinism, but all with realism. People actually fighting in battles…
I so agree. A pretty face isn't going to suddenly not be pretty if it's got a little dirt or blood on it. It never fails to take me out of a story when I see an actor/actress finish fighting only to look like they just came from wardrobe and makeup ready for the first shot of the day. Even a little realism would go a long way.

Meh...the criticism wasn't actually directed at ZLH.That's just one of Lily Malice-Phallus's standard, negative,…
I think some commenters either forget or don't know that MDL is not the only place in the drama world where people talk about dramas. And this is a minor platform compared to Chinese platforms, so I always appreciate finding out what's trending there.

I agree with your previous comment. However much I dislike seeing actors portrayed beautifully in battle scenes, it's not their doing. Unless they are also hired to do makeup and costumes they have nothing to do with how they look.

Loved this article. Too funny the way people get so up in arms when their favorite actor is criticized. I have favorite actors, too, but when they look beautiful and sweat-free after a vigorous battlefield scene I just roll my eyes. I would much rather see them looking a bit rough as if they actually had participated in the fighting so it doesn't break my enjoyment of the drama. (In fairness to ZLH I don't think he makes the decisions about what makeup he wears and I'm pretty sure he's cast for his visual appeal not his acting chops.)

It's a bit ironic for ZLH fans to complain about the criticism when a huge majority of the comments here during the drama's run were about how beautiful ZLH was. Obviously he's had a surge in popularity and endorsements so I doubt he's worried about his career. As they say, laughing all the way to the bank.

literally a year after this show is set 1937, during the Nanjing Massacre there was a Nazi Rabe working for a…
Thank you for this information and for his name so I can read further about him. What a hero, indeed!

You watched 584 shows? Wow! Do you sleep? 😊
I was nervous about Light Beyond the Reed, too, for the same reason as you. I did watch it and I'm really glad I did. The subject matter is, of course, very heavy. I can't say it's a light drama. But it was very well done in how it presented the topic and there were not a lot of scenes that could be triggering. You don't see the actual act in too much detail, moreso the immediate aftermath, but that was really hard to watch.

Why I was glad I watched it:
The FL grew stronger in spite of how her family/other people opposed her at the beginning.
Her husband supported her even though they had marriage problems.
Their relationship changed and grew as they learned to understand each other.
This serious topic was tackled and presented in enough detail to get the point across without being gratuitious.

It was ultimately a very uplifting drama. The actors were all phenomenal in their roles.

I hope you can give it a chance, but I surely understand your misgivings.

Judging by your rating I'm going to take a wild guess here and say this is satire! (I love it, though.)

If it's that confusing I'm glad to know ahead of time. Sometimes I have to go search for episode recaps to try to figure out what a drama is all about.

At some point I just have to laugh. The rating of this drama went from 9.2 to 9.1 and people are questioning why. For some reason the people who think this is the best drama this year/decade/ever don't understand that everyone might not share their same opinion. Just because you think this drama is nearly perfect doesn't mean that those who don't are haters.

The world is not filled with people trying to bring your favorite drama down. The world is filled with people who have different opinions on literally everything. Enjoy how much you love this drama, but let others feel their own way about it. Life is much less stressful when a drama rating doesn't make you unhappy.

I came in as a casual ZLH fan. The first 10 episodes were very well done and I actually like TXW for the first…
Have you watched DK in The Maid? I really liked him in that drama.

This is a very good drama. As usual when there is good drama doing well - the haters for sure will come knocking.…
Why are they unfair reviews? And why do you call people who have a different opinion about this drama haters? The reviews I've read have been very thoughtful with detailed insight as to why they disliked certain aspects of the drama.

I really like that you focused on a different aspect of this drama. It almost feels like the producers of it wanted to hypnotize the audience into loving it. And half the battle for ratings was already won by casting ZLH. Pretty he may be, but how much does pretty help the person who wants to watch an interesting, well-written drama instead of just gazing at an actor's well-lit and posed face? (Ngl, I like many pretty actors, but they are also ones who have real acting skills.)

Thank you for writing this, I've been thinking the same thing especially because there's a Cdrama airing about…
I wrote a reply to lina McRae also thanking her. And thank you for your comment here. I started this drama, but the fact that it's set in 1936 got me thinking and after doing a little research and reading this review and your comment I don't think I'm going to continue watching. However much the drama might ignore what Japan did, I would be constantly aware of it while watching.

I had been looking forward to this drama, but when it started out saying it took place in 1936 I started thinking about how I would react to a drama made about a Nazi officer and his wife before the war, just as you mentioned. I did a little research (including the info from lilili's comment about Unit 731).

While what I found out indicates that the officer in this drama is unlikely to have known about those experiments I can't shake the feelings I have about what Japan did during the war (two excellent books: Flyboys: A True Story of Courage by James Bradley and The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang) not to mention the ongoing rifts between Japan and China/Korea about what was done during the war. I got about 24 minutes in and I just don't think I'm going to be able to continue.

I want to thank you for writing this review. Yours is the only one I found online that talked about these issues. I was really surprised by that. Btw, who was the Nazi who tried saving China from Japanese?
