I felt the romance was a satire to the realistic modern day marriage/romance, at least that’s wot I felt the screenwriter was going for….

Don’t take the novel as a basis…. This is probably one of the minority of adaptations whereby the novel and the drama doesn’t have much in common aside from shared names…..

They changed the actor… this actor is a lot taller and also better looking. In S1, he was the aide of the 2nd Prince, the one who organised the poetry gathering… and I think the one who introduced him to Si Li Li, or at least the one who brought him to the place Si Li Li works.

No, I loved it, I thought all the episodes got better and better…. It was just in response to opinion of the FL… I actually think the ML is just as self-centered, everyone is in this drama… so the ML finally reveals his side of the story in Ep.27… it’s about 5 minutes… ML ‘forgives her for everything’ because of guilt, he is just as self-centered as the FL, and to be fair, he was the one who initiated everything, who wants to marry her….

You should watch Ep.27 when the ML finally came clean on his real intentions behind…. I mean, no harm done, it’s only an additional 5 minutes, since you already spent 23 eps

Loved that it was so different from the norm…

But to be fair, there is also emotion clouding judgement… he is after all her father…. And Fu Yun Xi is just too stuck in the entire web himself to see and judge things objectively coz he has too much too lose, which also makes him emotional….

Zhuang Shi Yang on the other hand, is not emotionally bounded by anything…. Hence the objectivity and ruthlessness… not to mention, he is also a lot older, a lot more seasoned….

lol, love your observation…. But it’s not only about smarts…. It’s the “slimy” bit… no matter how smart someone is….. they can’t beat someone who is smart and wicked, always lurking in the dark….. not everyone is innately cunning, and it’s difficult to outdo someone who is cunning…. Your brain needs to be wired a certain way….

LOL, I thought she’s super crazy… when I saw wot she did in Ep 1….. my jaw literally dropped………….. 😳😧 she was so random….. abrupt….

lol. Exactly my thoughts. I too don’t really understand the devotion to her mother BUT then again I found the whole concept of it very realistic esp given she’s only 17 yrs only in the drama….. damns but it’s super sombre to only know your mother for 100 days….

Haha, I was wondering the same…. I think it was trying to depict the lead’s imagination… like “how great would it be if…….”

I actually didn’t think of this as a revenge drama, the revenge was more of a subplot coz it only started around ep20… I found this to be a thriller… I do think the romance is probably as significant as the revenge theme, but it’s like you said, the way the romance storyline was presented and executed here didn’t meet expectations….

Think everyone is disappointed coz a lot of the mindset/mentality written here similar to our modern day times, like basically now….. and I found it veryyyy refreshing and cool that they injected this into a historical drama… so basically everyone in this drama including the FL and ML is very self-centered, but the audience was expecting the typical self-sacrificing thing…. Which frankly is more of a dream/hope or even fantasy in real life…..

I found the FL very cool though. lol. And I loved this drama coz everything was uber harsh and hardcore. lol. Like the screenwriter totally flexed his male point-of-view, I’m surprised some of the stuff passed Mainland censorship…

Same. But I also think it’s coz the whole revenge theme has been overproduced in the past 3 yrs……. Be it Kdrama or Cdrama….. The Double was like a pure revenge drama from start to end, so I can understand why you dropped it at ep5-6. I remember rolling my eyes towards the end of the drama too, coz revenge as a main genre is exhausting….

I loved this coz it’s not really a revenge drama, revenge was just a sub-plot, it only started around ep20, a lot of the plot and characters’ perspective were quite refreshing and unique. Actually I don’t think the romance is any less here than in The Double, but it’s just coz everyone in this drama is very self-centered including both the ML and FL, that’s why the romance becomes less “dreamy” and lovey-dovey…… Most Cdramas romance is always about self-sacrificing, i.e I can die for you any day etc.

Yeap me too…. lol, I try not to get acquainted in any way, but it’s difficult to avoid in a work setting……..

Ummmm not exactly like that, coz he broke a lot of laws in the drama including murder etc……. So this doesn’t happen in modern day times, at least I’ve never met someone that murdered anyone else, yikes….

but you know the main trait of the father in the sense he is such a softie, polite, gentle and docile character yet he actually always finds a scapegoat whenever he does something that makes him have a bad name/image…. Like everything is always everyone’s fault because theoretically he didn’t do anything directly himself…. In a way I do think these kinda people are very scary….. actually I’ve met a few people like that in real life, just the extent of it differs… hence I can understand when Zhuang HanYan asked him in the end if he loved anyone aside from himself….

Totally agree……….. the most amazing antagonist I’ve came across in a romance themed drama…… but I’ve actually met people like the father before in real life, of course I don’t know of them breaking any law…

lol, their relationship is really funny…. Super consistent right up to the end…… even with love there is no trust. 🤣🤣🤣 I actually think the screenwriter injected a lot of modern day thinking into the characters….. but this is probably the most brutal romance themed drama I’ve watched. I’m surprised it actually passed censorship……

He was the star of the show, if the actor for this role couldn’t deliver the acting bit, the drama wouldn’t have been so engaging……

I actually think his role was a parody to the society today… his expressions were so……. Realistic….. thank goodness he didn’t go for an exaggerated performance

His speech in Ep 27 was probably one of the most romantic things I’ve heard as a confession without saying “I love you”…. Actually it was super touching….

Wow, those last 5 episodes were awesome!! They were just as intense as the first episode!!
