I love Ao Rui Peng,and I wanted to love this new drama as well,but,oh boy,AvenueX was absolutely right in her critiques,it is beyond mediocre. You will be much better off just reading the book,if you can manage the 562 chapters.
I know many disagree,but after years of CSIs,Bones and NCISs the cases and the autopsies were just awful,childish and cartoonish.
The characters of Qin Wan and Yan Chi were reduced to mere shadows of the book ones,and I especially hated that Yan Chi was turned into her assistant who just writes stuff and stares longingly at her. Ao Rui Peng had nothing in the script to work with,after his wonderful performance in Moonlight Mystique and Seven relics of omen, and Li Landi had all of two-three expressions throughout the drama.
So many plot holes and illogical actions with the ending worst of all offenders leaving me with no sense of satisfaction whatsoever.
The only good thing I can mention is how beautiful they made Ao Rui Peng look,great clothes,hairstyles and makeup.
What a waste of talent and disappointment of a drama.......

Can't remember quite exactly,but I think prince Jin,Yan Che and Yan Qi were the emperor's sons,while Yan Chi,Yan Zhe and Yan Li are the sons of the emperor's brothers

prince Jin died because he had figured out the truth,as he was the one to find consort Jin's body (who had written the name of the murderer in blood before her own blood spread and covered it).Yan Qi dies executed by Yan Chi because he betrays their rebel alliance and he loses thousands of his soldiers.Yan Che I think simply gives up the throne,so yes,at the end there is only Yan Chi.

That's what happened in the novel.

I find him brilliant in almost everything,even in Beautiful time with you,he is support character,he loves the main girl and doesn't get her,of course,but boy,at the end I was screaming at my screen : Are you an idiot,how can you not fall in love with him?he absolutely stole the entire show!
I also loved loved him in Love is written in the stars,he has such a wide range from comedy to tragedy,from lonely emotional hedgehog to a fiercely loyal friend and lover.I truly think he is the most beautiful and talented Chinese actor of the moment.

Actually you should be happy you didn't read it before,the change in Yan Chi and Qin Wan's personalities threw me off so hard I was furious for 10 episodes,and I absolutely love Ao Rui Peng, I only stuck around for him.Igot over the anger and I am enjoying it for what it is now,but I do wish I hadn't read it first.

In the novel the emperor was actually the brother of the former crown prince whom he had killed in a rebellion,but having been burnt almost beyond recognition he was brought back as the crown prince,when he woke up and realized the truth he went along with it.

no competitors.There is one foreign tomboyish princess who chases after him and he pays her no attention not even remembering he had met her once.She realizes he treasures Qin Wan and tries to "test" her by making her ride a horse which almost kills Qin Wan (who manages to stab the horse). Later Yan Chi sends the princess as a gift her favourite horse's bloodied bell,which I totally loved as it showed his ruthlessness when it comes to anyone harming his girl.

The first ten episodes made me very angry,because the personalities of the main leads have been altered by a lot.I have resigned myself to treat the drama as something parallel and different,and I do enjoy the humorous scenes.I would not have continued if it hadn't been for Ao Rui Peng.
Having said that, I did enjoy the novel quite a lot,even though some of the cases seemed to drag too long,and I managed to last up to chapter 503,at which point I felt it had been too long and jumped straight to the end. Hope that helps.

Qin Xiang has an affair with the crown prince's brother and gives up on an appropriate mariage to become his lowly concubine,Qin Shuang marries happily the guy who was supposed to marry her sister

Once married,he proves to be quite insatiable in the bedroom.

She has the Grand Princess' protection,in the capital she saves the Empress Dowager's life so she has her protection as well,and in solving a national crisis the emperor names her commandery princess which puts her above the marquis rank so technically no one can force her into an unwanted marriage.At some point there is a bit of a risk as in the competition between the crown prince and his brother they both put her name on their consort candidates list,but Yan Chi manages to have her name deleted from both lists so quietly and discreetly behind the scenes that both princes think the other one did it.

562 chapters,at the end they become emperor and empress.

In the novel Han Yue(the dagger) was extremely sharp and she did manage to give him a deep cut before losing it.

What was so quiet about her hysterical outburst?Which was only done so he could hug her like the assistant hero he was so stupidly written to be?I am beyond disappointed with this drama.I love Ao Rui Peng and seeing him reduced to a two dimensional character as someone so aptly said above is heartbreaking.He's played support characters that outshone those dramas' main leads.Had they kept Yan Chi's novel character Ao Rui Peng would have embodied him to perfection. Landi Li is utterly miscast and directed here.Novel Qin Wan was brilliant,freakishly calm and serene and just as strategic as Yan Chi,who was always prepared and had plans for every contingency.
I can't believe how badly they adapted the novel.I kind of wish I hadn't read it,maybe now I wouldn't feel so sad and insulted at the same time.
