In the novel the emperor was actually the brother of the former crown prince whom he had killed in a rebellion,but having been burnt almost beyond recognition he was brought back as the crown prince,when he woke up and realized the truth he went along with it.

no competitors.There is one foreign tomboyish princess who chases after him and he pays her no attention not even remembering he had met her once.She realizes he treasures Qin Wan and tries to "test" her by making her ride a horse which almost kills Qin Wan (who manages to stab the horse). Later Yan Chi sends the princess as a gift her favourite horse's bloodied bell,which I totally loved as it showed his ruthlessness when it comes to anyone harming his girl.

The first ten episodes made me very angry,because the personalities of the main leads have been altered by a lot.I have resigned myself to treat the drama as something parallel and different,and I do enjoy the humorous scenes.I would not have continued if it hadn't been for Ao Rui Peng.
Having said that, I did enjoy the novel quite a lot,even though some of the cases seemed to drag too long,and I managed to last up to chapter 503,at which point I felt it had been too long and jumped straight to the end. Hope that helps.

She has the Grand Princess' protection,in the capital she saves the Empress Dowager's life so she has her protection as well,and in solving a national crisis the emperor names her commandery princess which puts her above the marquis rank so technically no one can force her into an unwanted marriage.At some point there is a bit of a risk as in the competition between the crown prince and his brother they both put her name on their consort candidates list,but Yan Chi manages to have her name deleted from both lists so quietly and discreetly behind the scenes that both princes think the other one did it.

562 chapters,at the end they become emperor and empress.

In the novel Han Yue(the dagger) was extremely sharp and she did manage to give him a deep cut before losing it.

What was so quiet about her hysterical outburst?Which was only done so he could hug her like the assistant hero he was so stupidly written to be?I am beyond disappointed with this drama.I love Ao Rui Peng and seeing him reduced to a two dimensional character as someone so aptly said above is heartbreaking.He's played support characters that outshone those dramas' main leads.Had they kept Yan Chi's novel character Ao Rui Peng would have embodied him to perfection. Landi Li is utterly miscast and directed here.Novel Qin Wan was brilliant,freakishly calm and serene and just as strategic as Yan Chi,who was always prepared and had plans for every contingency.
I can't believe how badly they adapted the novel.I kind of wish I hadn't read it,maybe now I wouldn't feel so sad and insulted at the same time.

It's very bothersome,especially since in the novel.Qin Wan was a monument of calm and serenity.Drama Yan Chi is also too emotional and makes too many mistakes,and in the novel.he was very smart and calculated almost everything,having backup plans to backup plans.This drama is very disappointing,unfortunately.

Valid points,I would also like to add that Ao Rui Peng's Yan Chi has been reduced to a simple frowny/puppy eyed support,whereas in the novel he was always brilliantly strategic and manipulating behind the scenes.I was so looking forward to his performance after his amazing and wonderful Fan Yue and Yi Wan San,and so far he's been given almost nothing to work with....

Oh,I feel your pain.The one and only time I forced myself to watch a drama was when I thought there was something wrong with me that I didn't like Love between fairy and devil,and everyone else was raving about it.22 episodes later I swore I would never torture myself needlessly like that again.

I usually stand with people who dismiss such harsh critiques on a drama with an actor I love, and I do love Ao Rui Peng, but even I have to admit the first three episodes were really disappointing. The whole story was literally flash-forwarded so hard it felt like we were being slapped over the head with it(what, you don't get it ? style). Having read the the novel, I know what's supposed to happen, but this was way too fast,especially Qin Wan inserting herself in the coroner's job when in the novel it was really slow and hard for her to do it-what with her being a woman as beautiful and delicate as a divine fairy and the job being considered one of the lowest kind.
The clothes look ...somewhat cheaper than I would have expected for such a production.
The autopsies....wrong-one little cut and her inserting her hand and taking out one organ and that was that...The bodies so fake looking-again,making the production look cheap.
The editing and dubbing-subpar.
Yan Chi's character is less serious here than in the novel,but that may not necessarily be a bad thing.
Things got better though from episode 4 on.
But like I said,I love Ao Rui Peng,so I will watch this to the end,probably repeatedly.
However I understand your complaints-especially after my recent experience with the Princess' Gambit comment section where I was told to reassess my so-called intelligence when I complained after just one episode during which I was accurately predicting one scene after another, at first feeling amused then more and more insulted,especially after recognizing a bgm melody that I had heard years ago in the Korean Scarlet Heart Ryeo.
So if this drama is not good enough for you, it's absolutely ok. Don't feel guilty or attacked by the rest of us who will stand by it.
