I see - thanks that makes sense. I just always wondered even with all these really amazing dramas conveying deep love that lasts beyond lifetimes and to hear them only say xihuan instead of ai seemed odd when you compare to western expressions.

I have a general question. Can anyone explain why it seems like in Chinese dramas, even the ones with deep love stories like this one, never have the characters say “wo ai ni”? Instead they always say “wo xihuan ni?” is this an uncommon thing to say? Seems odd that sometimes after some huge confession it’s an “I like you” rather than “I love you”! Or am I taking the words too literally??
