As I was watching, I kept thinking "this has to be adapted from a novel" and sure enough, it was. The best way to describe this movie is as a short story in visual form. It's actually crazy how accurate they got the book vibes.
And as expected, it's slow. Very slow. Shots that last forever, a whole lot of not much going on, very 'life' genre core, which the synopsis did not prepare me for. I watched the whole thing at 1.5 speed and barely felt it. There's a lot of name-dropping, which gets confusing, as well as some flashbacks/visions, which are also confusing. Even after watching the whole thing, I'm still not sure what the point or even plot was past "tea master died". I didn't completely lock in on the story but I didn't skip anything, so I should know more than I do, lol.
I think the story had potential, but it was just too vague, uninteresting, and slow for a movie. As a short film of 40 minutes max, maybe.
Trust is love? More like "How to emotionally, psychologically, financially, and even physically abuse your boyfriend and then gaslight him into thinking he's the problem." but I guess that's a bit of a mouthful π Truly a woman in men's field
Hands down THE best matriarchy drama I've seen. This commits so well to the trope. It actually writes the characters in the reversed roles and commits to the world it establishes. If you want to actually see feminine men and masculine women, this is the drama for you!
I loved how ML was written as the feisty type who needs to play the coquettish role to fight off love rivals and how he goes from wanting to get divorced to trying to get his wife's affection back through seduction (though he never lost it, haha). Also, how absolutely smitten FL was for him and how she supported him. Loved the positive depiction of a FL in a matriarchy! Very refreshing.
I did find it a bit unfortunate that ML had no buddies that were actually decent; a little bromance would've been nice. Same for FL btw. It also had a handful of moments that were made traditional for seemingly no reason? But since everything else was so well-done, I'll give it a pass.
Huge shoutout to the empress's concubines for being ICONS!! Especially the homme fatale. LOVE him
oh my GOD!?!?!?!?!? We're getting a season 2?!?!?! WHAT?! That's actually crazy. I was NOT expecting this drama to get a second season!! I'm so stoked!!!
Also, "In the sequel, Ichika and Amane welcome a new member into their family." Are they having a BABY??!!? AAAWWWWW
The synopsis makes it sound like Qiao is a selfish brat, but tbh, it seemed more like she was suffering from severe depression and not getting the treatment she needed.
Especially what she said about AI, "why bother doing anything when you (the AI) can just do it with a click. but you can't give birth" felt pretty bleak and very relevant with the rise of generative AI we've been seeing lately (especially relevant to her as a creative)... Not sure what the movie intended its message to be, but it certainly was an interesting watch.

This having a "happy ending" was diabolical.
