Wow! Those old laws were really something π Thank God, we're lucky to be existing in an age where the laws are much, much better. π
And yay! DYX is back. π That's my favorite CP (DYX + LXN) DYX is witty, calculative, and when pushed to the deep end, likes to behave like a martyr but at least he has his reasons. 1) He wants to actually be responsible for his loved ones. 2) He absolutely does not want to repeat his father's mistake. 3) He genuinely wants to repay his step-mother and mother-in-law.
LXN is stoic, stubborn, placid and almost cold yet 1) Her tragic past and the traumatic experiences post it. 2) The harsh days that she's been forced to live
All of these made her unable to reciprocate her emotions freely.
This romance has a lot of layers and draws realistic parallels. And so I resonate the most with it. Plus, for a story to be relatable, it needs to have many twists and plot points to be able to make us wait for the next episode in anticipation. I wish that DYX+LXN can now enter the second stage of their relationship.
4th CP - HD + SHZ The thing that I find most refreshing about them is that HD decided to be honest to SHZ from the beginning of his accident. And SHZ is now slowly getting used to her liveliness , kindness and compassion.
I mean, he has plenty of chances to apologise. He is just too proud. Two son-in-laws have already been grounded.…
But I don't want him to feel the need to apologise. That doesn't justify the natural behaviour of this character.
DYX has to feel some kind of a genuine emotion for LXN in order to apologise to her.
LXN said herself that she's given up on worldly love. She knows DXY's character. She nursed him back then without thinking of anything in return. She knows that the Du family got the short end of the stick in that marriage.
She's shown as mature and worldly-wise. So, why is she taking offence now when she doesn't even have any relationship with him? This goes against her projected character profile.
loll DYX didn't really give LXY any chance to talk to him. Considering they are the next main couple though we…
I meant before their marriage. LXY was the eldest sister overseeing everything. She should've just talked to him instead.
And yeah, even I'm hoping for a more rounded character development for both.
Be it miscommunication, angst, despair or understanding, I hope they give the audience enough time to absorb and process the emotions the characters are going through.
I'd hate them both to behave like paper cutouts....
She expecting herself to be treated as a true wife without having developed any camaraderie.
He being blown away by her beauty in one second and slapped back to reality immediately after listening to a stranger.
Episode 11: The show promotes itself as a light-hearted comedy types, but I'd like to see a little bit more depth added to its characters.
Liu Xie Ning (LXN) - She's portrayed as a sombre, mature woman who had to grow up very fast due to her family's conditions.
So, when the marriage between her and Du Yang Xi (DYX) happened, she should've known what the blowback was going to be.
She was the first to point it out to her sisters how DYX would react if they decieved him, during the marriage negotiations with Kang Ning. And she's intelligent enough to have analysed DYX accurately.
Then, the modifications to the same marriage was discussed with DYX's mother and he wasn't even consulted. Anyone who is treated like DYX, would have a similar response. He couldn't openly disregard his mother's decision but if LXN had an honest conversation with him, it would've helped.
And now, in the name of conflict, they're introducing another character who may or may not be telling the truth.
DYX - He's introduced to us as a talented, proud scholar who's finally getting his dreams realised.
But they made him do a 360 so fast that it gave me whiplash.
He suppressed his annoyance at having to consent to a marriage in order to show gratitude. Plus, he's had to compromise again with the bride.
So, I wish they could show his displeasure for a few more episodes, coupled with the new character who is definitely going to kick up a storm.
I'm hoping to see more layers in these characters, in the future episodes. π€
He was right tho, no other man would love her like he would. She has a temperament that matches his. Any other…
Yeah. Kang Ning is the Beta female type. She has an intelligent mind but is willing to shoulder the responsibility of her large family, at any personal cost. She's a nurturer. Chai An is gonna get loads of lessons in humility, sensitivity and empathy towards others before she becomes his partner. ππ
The person who is Chai An's true equal is Kang Ning.... obviously because she matches his intellect and can thwart his shrewd intentions.
However, it was revealed that Chai An had to become ' The Man of the Family' at a tender young age of 13. So, his ruthlessness and manipulation skills are what helped him survive and thrive till date.
But I think, Chan An with his compulsive need to control everything around him, is going to get a redemption arc at Kang Ning's hands.
I'm also very intrigued by the story between Du Yang Xi (DXY) and Liu Xie Ning (LXN). Till now they've yet to interact one-on-one.
One (DYX) is an exceptional talent with a humble background, yet with high morals and self-worth. And, the other (LXN) is the self-sacrificing oldest child who's living for the sake of her family.
I'm super excited as to how these two will meet and how their lives intersect. Is DXY really as humble as he claims to be? Is LXN going to give herself another chance at life or continue to accept her past as her fate?
maybe if itβs just me, but the MLs asshole-iness doesnβt seem realistic, they feel like 21st century assholes…
We can't claim that the men written in the story are inadequate in sensibility and emotional depth, based on 5 episodes alone. I beg to differ on this. Maybe watch the entire series to see what this drama has to offer. πβοΈ
I think the show started with the premise of showcasing how - 1) A widowed mother of 5 surviving children and an adopted one, refuses to be at the mercy of the cruel world and cruel fate.
2) Her husband died early and so did her only son. The timeline is of the Song Dynasty when women were limited to their boudoirs.
3) The men from that timeline would generally be considered assholes if we were judging from the 21st century POV.
4) However, this is a story of how women, from that timeline, struggle to create a better future for themselves.
So, I think
1) The men being how they are is a part of the story's conflicts.
2) The mother-in-law being insufferable is how some privileged women would actually behave.
3) The character progression for each of the characters and how they achieve their heart's desire, is the whole point of the story.
4) So, we can't have knights in shining armours and paper princesses since they don't exist in reality. We mostly have to put in a great amount of effort to get the life that we want and our personal choices.
I think this is a great show which is going to showcase all of the above. So, all of us here let's watch it together and let the DRAMA UNFOLD... ππππ
(P.S. General Song Mo is the father of 6 kids..... I can't ππππ)
Maybe I'm greedy but I think this show needs a Season 2 cuz:
1) Fan Yue + Bai Shuo need to explore more of their relationship from the past (Ik the last 10 episodes are gonna highlight this but there are other side plots too.) and the present which would evolve their relationship to a deeper level.
2) I need a reincarnated Mu Jiu + Tian Huo story arc with a HE.
3) A reincarnated Cheng Tao + Fan Yue brotherhood because of Fan Yue's traumatic childhood and loss.
5) Fu Ling being accepted by Bai Sho and them with Chong Xiao being a family again. (All three of them were torn apart from each other due to brutal circumstances).
6) A Chong Xiao + Fu Ling slow-burn romance with a proper story arc with both being each other's antidote to their inner demons.
7) A new peace pact between the Eternals , Divine Race and the Demons. π€
OMG! The Fox Clan has too many tragic love stories. Please tell me that all the sacrifice of the previous generation is enough to sustain Mu jiu + Tian Huo's love story. They're so cute together π€π
Ditto. But please let the story matter π. Considering his acting portfolio right now, a rom-com with the same, formulaic structure would be so boring. Manifesting a rom-com drama which can propel him to even greater heights of his career. π€π€
Mermaid / Intercross movie. It will be released on October probably. But Yibo and his team always keep the news…
Thank you π Ya the haters are a menace. But, I thought he was only working in movies until War Of Faith. And I've loved all his projects so far. He's really talented π
After 30 episodes, here's my review Pros: 1) Love the CP. They're perfect. π 2) Second chances resonate more, especially if it's a romance that was meant to be but ended up being star-crossed. β 3) A strong Antagonist whose tragic fate justifies his actions. β 4) The CP seeing each other clearly and learning from past mistakes β 5) Secondary characters having their independent stories that actually support the main plot.
Cons: 1) Crisper storytelling - I wish they'd edited the script a bit more because it's via the camera lens now. So, it should be more visual.
2) Character development -
Pei Wenxuan needs more screen - time and better camera angles and dialogues with Su Rong Qing.
Su Rong Qing needs to portray more emotional conflict and pain, due to his trauma from the previous life. His character arc has to be more agressive.
3) Cohesiveness - The story jumps from plot to plot and then shows us the reactions of the main characters. I wish they'd designed it to follow the actions of the Antagonist (SRQ) due to his trauma, and then, make the CP react to those.
4) The Crown Prince - The entire story happens because of the crown prince's past-life actions but now, they seem to have forgotten that he's the main catalyst. Hello! He's just treated as a prop now. π€·π»ββοΈ Please give him his share of the action π

This is a slice-of-life Drama. And, I'm looking forward to seeing this family navigate their life in Imperial China. ππ
