This is what is called the “hook”. It’s to get viewers to watch the next episode but it’s also a mark of effective storytelling.

Billing order is essentially the show’s ranking and is usually decided when the actor or actress signs the contract. Screen time, script, costumes can all be changed later on an actor or actress but once the contract is signed and it’s officially announced, billing order can’t be changed without repercussions.

A lot of people are getting confused because they watch romantic idol dramas and in most of those dramas, first and second billing are usually ML/FL, the official pair, and usually have the most screen time. This drama doesn’t use that system. Its ranking is based off a myriad of things including commercial value, audience base, and achievements, etc. So Peng Xiao Ran is not a FL in the traditional sense of being a romantic partner, having tons of screen time, or even being deeply involved in the storyline. She is the FL based off a multitude of factors including that the show producers were willing to give her the position of second billing. If they didn’t think she should be FL, they would not have given her the position.

I mentioned Yang Yutong being fifth billing because some people wrongly assume Yang Yutong would be second billing if Peng Xiao Ran was a guest star. She wouldn’t be, she would be fourth. So even if Yang Yutong was the FL ,the MDL order wouldn’t really change.

Yes, I think it’s key to keep things respectful as much as possible. It’s only when the atmosphere is good that discussion and interaction can flourish. I’d just ignore the trolls. Many do it for attention and ignoring them takes away their motivation.

Well, MYM does have less screen time in the source material so I can’t be too upset. I think I was prepared for little screen time because I watched the anime and I follow her Chinese fans who mentioned her appearance rate in the script.
If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d recommend Goodbye My Princess. The sense of transformation in Xiao Feng is really stellar. And it’s a really thorough exploration of corruption arcs and fatal flaws driving characters.

Yeah, it’s a shame . She has a lot of potential and I think she’s one of the few actresses in C-ent where you can see actual growth in her work but she just doesn’t have the backing and backing is everything. I mean even with this show where she’s 2nd billing, her already limited screen time was cut to the point that it’s affected the character’s portrayal.

Love&Crown is supposed to be landed (non-fantasy) although there is a martial arts aspect. She has a modern drama in stock but it’s not been released yet. I’m not sure when she’ll be able to get a modern drama. A few months ago she said she hadn’t been market tested for modern dramas so didn’t really get any scripts from that genre.

Love & Crown should hopefully be a step in that direction. Pang Hongmei from Huamei is also a step into the mature role arena. She plays a stony faced police officer. It’s got 0 romance but watching her catch spies and trying to guess the identity of the big baddie, Snow Wolf, is really fun.

Rather than FL by screen time or storyline, it’s more Peng Xiao Ran is second billing so she is automatically the FL of the drama over Yang Yutong who is fifth billing.

Her appearance is inline with the book and anime. MYM doesn’t appear as much and the drama respects the source material. I can understand some Peng Xiao Ran fans are upset but Peng Xiao Ran herself said she’s okay with it so true PXR fans will respect her choice. There’s no need to bring ill will to her by putting down her colleagues or the show. If you want to see more of her, Love and Crown should be premiering later this month.

I mean she became poisoned through experimenting with poison so I don’t see why she wouldn’t be able to still make them. All being normal would do would make her less competitive in the field.

Why wouldn’t he care about her? Even if she’s normal now, she’d still be a poison master.

Didn’t you drop it at episode 6? Anyway it’s pretty much nonstop brawling for the first third of the show so if the action isn’t appealing now this show might not be for you.

I doubt it given its promotion in the past. It doesn’t have the same style as BR.

Tang Lian! I kept wondering who he was! I saw his name mentioned because Lin Xinze, the actor who played him as an adult, has filmed two dramas with Xiao Ran and people kept joking in the comments that he had stolen his master’s wife.

The styling of this show is really nice. The heroine’s clothes look quite pretty.

True. And it doesn’t help that new titles are constantly being made up too😂
