But that still doesn’t justify wasting the actress’s and audience’s trust or time. I don’t find the story any more profound because of it. In fact, I can’t get into the rest of the story because of it. And now I’m even more reluctant to watch anything with GJM in the future (even if he brings in someone I like again.) The actress’s fans were tearing her up the other day and telling her not to act in his next drama. It may even affect his casting abilities in the future. I have nothing against BL. Lord knows I was almost a fujoshi as a kid because I watched so much of it. But I watch BL to see the emotional connection between men not to see female characters suppressed or poorly written to support that connection. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth as a viewer. Like I said before in other posts , Wen Xiao doesn’t need to be a strong romantic contender but as a lead, her character should have been written with the depth it deserved. Especially if there were rewrites. That means that the show went through multiple rounds of review still didn’t correct such a glaring mistake. The thing is they didn’t have to market any romantic relationships at all if they were worried about censorship. There was a lot of interest in it being a group unit story. If it had been sold more as a group unit story no one would have blinked at the ZYZ/ZYC storyline because a group unit story implies any kind of relationship. They just would have to be a bit more savvy in presentation. And in regards to restrictions on BL, there have been a few that have aired, modified but in entirety, since the ban but they didn’t seem to be popular. But thank you for the discussion. It’s not that they put in WX to get past censorship but that this show specifically marketed the ZYZ/WX pairing and a compelling FML from the beginning. So if the show is going to sell ZYZ/WX and Wen Xiao so hardcore, the work needs to support it. Otherwise, there will be criticism.

By formulas, it’s less to do with the actual voting system and more to do with what content will get a high rating on MDL. Basically there are certain types of dramas/factors that will do well on MDL because MDL’s base likes them and the ratings tend to be higher despite the actual quality of the show.

While you’re not wrong about MDL ratings not really counting much for Cdramas overall, Douban itself doesn’t have the reputation it used to have either. There’s a lot of downvoting and other suspicious activity. In reality both are “gamed” rating systems. I’d argue Douban is more influenced by fan culture than MDL but MDL does have certain “formulas” that score high with its base. Anything or Anyone outside of those formulas tends to struggle on here.
