I think the problem is GJM marketed this show as the ZYZ/WX pairing not the ZYZ/ZYC pairing. And he sold Wen Xiao as more than he allowed her to be. He’s a former author and has been directing for a decent number of years-he should be able to integrate her into the story but it’s obvious from the depth and development of other characters that it was a conscious choice not to. There doesn’t have to be a competing level of romance but there should be the level of development and growth (in any form) that a main character should have. Wen Xiao doesn’t even get to be beautiful on her own like the show suggests in the opening scenes which is a pity and weakens the overall story because ultimately GJM is not selling on the key things he promised to deliver, which is one of the ultimate sins of storytelling.

MDL accepts the FML and theZYZ/WX storyline being heavily suppressed to promote the ZYZ/ZYC storyline but domestically one of the running criticisms of the show is that GJM shouldn’t have done this. If he wants to sell ZYZ/ZYC then sell ZYZ/ZYC from the start. And if he wants Wen Xiao as a pendant, don’t sell her as some sort of maverick. If he had sold FoF as ZYZ/ZYC then the audience would have set their expectations for them. Don’t trick the audience and sneak in another loveline at the expense of the marketed loveline. It’s selling horse meat as beef and breaks the trust of the audience.

I think maybe the bad ending is more that the characters themselves have a “bad” end rather than the ending is bad if that makes sense.
I used to love BE but then I saw the BE juggernaut, Goodbye My Princess and switched to the HE team😂

It’s the terminology used in Cdramas for tragic endings. It’s weird though that while so many like HE but so many of the Cdramas considered to be classics that I’ve seen are BE😂

It just means it’s not their cup of tea but it’s not actually a bad ending objectively speaking.

Sometimes I really dislike the term BE. A sad ending is not a bad ending. The best ending for any drama is the ending that suits.

If you want to see what would happen if LCY was less ruthless-Royal Nirvana.
If you want an anti-hero male lead/complicated relationship -Rise of the Phoenix.
If you want a tortured FL- Rise of the Phoenix, Royal Nirvana
If you want a cute yet believable heroine like FL- I don’t think there’s anything out like it.

It’s a costume drama but not historical. It’s more a fantasy story.

This is why I didn’t really think it was completely fair to criticise the number of photos and filming videos uploaded for this show. It’s natural that some things don’t make it into the show but the level of record keeping that went on is now literally serving as an excellent archive for what didn’t make it.

For me, it’s the world building + a cast with a developed enough sense of character creation to support that world building. There is a sense that somewhere in a parallel world, these characters could exist and I think that’s really key to creating an engaging costume drama-and potentially why Cdramas have been struggling lately. There are a decent number of actors with character creation abilities, but there are not enough Cdrama directors with the ability to world build or pull any of those abilities out. When it comes to eating, presentation plays a huge part. A dish presented well will give a greater sense of enjoyment and engagement than a sloppily prepared one even if they taste the same. I thinking picking up a drama is quite similar. Without directors who know how to “serve” a story it’s harder to find something to “eat” and to fully enjoy the meal.

It’s set in a fantasy world so I don’t think historical accuracy should matter so much. It’s like one of the cast members was getting dragged for having brown instead of pure black hair when it was shooting and it’s so weird. Like there’s literally people with magical powers walking around and a few guitar chords breaks the suspension of disbelief?😂

I do this. But I focus more on what is making a story work despite obvious flaws. That’s stuff I can pick up and use in my own work.

“There was no need to put FL aside to present other plots. ” I agree with this. And this is the biggest problem with the show to me. I feel like any show that does this does itself a disservice.

Tbh, I feel like GJM wasted an opportunity with the two of them. CDL is really charming and Peng Xiao Ran can pull off sisterhood really well.

This^Sometimes the bashing gets so bad, it ruins the vibe of the show. And on MDL, I often feel like I have to spend most of my time defending a FML when I watch a show otherwise risk seeing the page become a cesspool. There was a drama with a FML who didn't have much of a fanbase on here and the comments were absolutely terrible. I ended up not watching the show because of it.

Haha, cute! It’s a shame they didn’t have more screen time together. A lot of people were looking forward to them in the same frame.
