I don't think it got simplified. They just emphasized some performances over others. Supposedly the slow director ran out of time and didn't shoot all of Xu Kai's scenes. Saving the best for last doesn’t always work.

Makes me wonder if dad's appearance changed when he was in demon form.

Wu Zhen becoming a full demon wasn't explained. Maybe having the Infant Demon core in her prevented it.

We saw a few examples of Mei Zhuyu letting off demons who had done no wrong so his walk didn't match his talk. He was much more lenient than he let on.

If Wu Zhen had seen him purify and release the goose demon, this would have been a very different, but I think very watchable, story.

Why read the novel when the word is out that lots of drastic changes have been made?

If a character is willing to do anything to protect a woman, his family, or his friends is a simp, then I question what kind of characters you don't assign a derogatory label to.

Do you really think he comes off as gray in the trailer? Backhanding a grandma is much closer to red flag.
