Most actors grew out of XianXia genres. They will transition to more serious dramas after a while. If he keep taking this kind of roles, then you have to get worried as it meant he failed to transition to more serious roles.

One & Only, Forever & Ever, Mr Lizard, Blue Whisper, Burning Flames, Twilight, Love of Nirvana, Demon Hunter, Silent Tides and Abyss are all his own selections. These are all external projects that he took even when hes in H&R. Thats why you noticed its all have the same flavour which deal with important and serious topics and not solely focus on romance.

Sad ending like Love of Nirvana doesnt necessarily mean the drama is bad, the journey is more important than the destination and thats what Chinese audiences appreciate in their dramas. That is why RJL has many iconic roles in his resume since he brought to life these characters even though some of them have tragic ends.

The only drama of his with terrible script for the past 5 years is Love & Crown which he is forced to film to leave H&R. Both Demon Hunter Romance and Love of Nirvana are praised for the its quality script. And Fate Chooses You are set to be another excellent work from him since both the director and writer have many hit dramas under them. I'm a big fan of the writer actually since she loves writing scripts that made you think out of the box and a bit philosophical.
This is a misconception that has been spread around which has no truth. He only has 5 sad ending dramas and 12 happy ending dramas and 2 open ending dramas.
Ren Jialun has only 4 dramas where he died. He has many happy ending dramas which is 14 dramas. And this drama is a confirmed happy ending. The writer told us last year. 😁

Love of Nirvana is actually one of his most iconic roles. He won many awards for that role. Viewership now has reduced so much due to the cold market since the last 2 years. Last time, its much easier to reach 100m/ep but now any dramas that reached 30m/ep is already considered as hits.
Also, Im glad he ended his XianXia dramas with a capable writer. So, we could expect another highly rated douban drama for him for FCY, hopefully.
