While Silent Tides received 3% ratings when it was aired at CCTV last year. Countless newspapers praised the writing and plot of the story. Both of dramas received high douban ratings as well.

He is known as God of Costume dramas after all so he will still take them. The one he probably wont take anymore is XianXia dramas.

He is rumoured for CCTV1 Tang Dynasty Epic for his next project. So if the schedule is right, he will take them as the shooting will start in October. Really hope he will get this role since this will be his first serious historical epic drama.

Most actors grew out of XianXia genres. They will transition to more serious dramas after a while. If he keep taking this kind of roles, then you have to get worried as it meant he failed to transition to more serious roles.

These are all external projects that he took even when hes in H&R. Thats why you noticed its all have the same flavour which deal with important and serious topics and not solely focus on romance.

Sad ending like Love of Nirvana doesnt necessarily mean the drama is bad, the journey is more important than the destination and thats what Chinese audiences appreciate in their dramas. That is why RJL has many iconic roles in his resume since he brought to life these characters even though some of them have tragic ends.

And Fate Chooses You are set to be another excellent work from him since both the director and writer have many hit dramas under them. I'm a big fan of the writer actually since she loves writing scripts that made you think out of the box and a bit philosophical.
