I feel like many wouldn't be on Zhang Zhe's side if he didn't reincarnate with Ning'er. Saw some comments where they were wondering why Zhang Zhe reincarnated too bc it doesn't seem to serve any purpose. It might be his second and proper chance at being together with Xuening. He put his principles aside for her last life and didn't deserve all that he faced. No one did so this might be fate's way of giving all the characters a second chance. This is why I feel like not just Ning'er but everyone in the story is getting a proper second chance to change their fates.

Also, Zhang Zhe’s reincarnation serves a purpose beyond just ending up with Jiang Xuening. His reincarnation adds depth to his character and the overall plot. Even though they don’t end up together, his reincarnation allows him to protect Jiang Xuening in ways he couldn’t in their past life. Zhang Zhe is aware of Jiang Xuening’s rebirth but chooses not to reveal it to her because he knows that she would feel guilty if she found out.

I wish what Zhang Zhe said to Ning'er near the frozen lake was an eye-opener for her and that's where their love story arc stops. He literally said wrong is wrong even if it's done for the right reasons. Knowing his principles, there's no way Xuening will forgive herself. In the novel, Xuening's guilt overwhelms her when Zhang Zhe addresses her as your Highness in the 2nd life, confirming the fact that he reincarnated too. That is why they part ways. Since they're gonna part anyway and given the fact that they are close now, i wish their romance arc could end here and not extend it, hurting everyone in the process

Although that's in his character, I truly think otherwise. He might consider Zhang Zhe a tool but wouldn't kill an innocent person. He seems ruthless but that's when you threaten his existence. He is morally grey but he doesn't drag innocent people into the mud. In the novel, he doesn't get in the way of Xuening and Zhang Zhe despite being in love with her. Although envious he never once acted upon it until his Ning'er died and was furious at everything and everyone including Zhang Zhe. He could have easily killed Zhang Zhe this life but he respects Zhang Zhe despite his black-and-white outlook on good and bad.

Ning'er is the reason Zhang Zhe confirmed his suspicion of Xie Wei's involvement with the rebels. She should have just hid in the prison instead of swaying with Zhang Zhe after getting her heart fluttered. yan family just got exiled, rebels are attacking the prison, and what do we get?! a slow-mo of xuening running away with Zhang Zhe, star-struck.
