He was basically told that his engagement was cancelled. He was still basically a kid himself [just getting old enough to marry] and had zero say once his father had decided. And the EMPEROR condemned her entire family.... there wasn't much he could do to save her. As others have said, they never even met.

This is why I tend to avoid the novels. I find the kind of novel that gets made into a drama is usually a lot darker than I would enjoy as a reader.
