I suggest you to take some time and give another try. Coming from the novel too before the Chinese drama, yes, this is way far superior to the cringe korean remake.
Qing dinasty used that handsome hairstyle meaning manliness. It's a kind of hairstyle suited for seasoned actors and handsome men, not youngsters. They hairstyle is a symbol of adulthood and being a man, children were used to this style only if they were in the Imperial family. Commoners apply this style only for adults.
They filmed a bit in the real Forbidden City and then they filmed in Hengdian in the replica of the Forbidden City.
The drama follows the real historical events perfectly close, and for the design they actually used real costumes for painting of that period. The actors are even more appealing and not childish like korean ones which i could not even find a single men in there, too young for a series like this even for their acting.
I appreciate your liking for the production and this is why I suggest to give another try because you missed the powerful plot, which is not as childish and cringe like in the remake.
As a novel fan, the korean remake is shallow and not even as dark as the original. I cried a river in the novel and in the drama ( the novel has a more tragic ending) but for the remake i never cried.

I support this. In September 2025 China prohibited pure entertainment. Cdramas should not be hyped to people not interested in Chinese culture. We need to protect it.

probably because it's the failure remake of my favorite historical drama ever? and korean fans should kneel to that drama because this trashy remake won't ever exist without the original? korean fans should learn chinese to read the original novel rather than begging and being ignorant. To each its own, don't worry. To me, humor and comedy remind me of a circus, clowns... and of untrustworthy and unserious people. I can't trust people living on humor and comedy.
We have two different point of views and it's ok, no one is better than the other. If you drop it it's ok, I will finish it skipping scenes only because IU is carrying the show as acting level, surprisingly. The scenes you don't find humor would have enough for me to drop it too, but I will continue only because of her.

I am referring to her shouting at her computer, and she is almost barking. It is ridiculous, maybe not funny for someone but it's ridiculous. In ep 2 too, same vibes. And sorry, i dislike it. I would have dropped it if the drama had no IU. I despise comedy, humor and things like this, I get annoyed and bored. It counts in the drama for me, since it is anticlimatic in the seriousness and heavy vibes it should have.

This is why IU was working alone in episode 1 because no other was at her level. I don't like humor and for me humor is a sign of illiteracy and ignorance. In episode 1 no sign of humor? Whe she barks like a dog when her request wsas rejected? is it normal to bark like a dog?
IU deserves better being the queen of sadness, I hope other episodes will be better
