I wasn’t going to do this but since Liu Ran is getting so much unfair hate (on here and other platforms) I thought I’d stand up for the girl. I want to stress that you DO NOT have to like her character but I do think people are being too harsh on her.

She is a cosseted rich girl from a prominent family raised to be a good wife so marrying a good husband is her dream in life. That’s it. She’s unfortunately not a fully realized character by herself. She exists only as an extension of Baili Hongyi, to sometimes indirectly help him solve his dilemmas, to give his character a bit of humanization (i.e. warmth) and some character growth. To be honest, if there was no wife and all Erlang got in the end was to solve the mystery then what an empty life.

First, she didn’t blackmail ErLang to marry her with the workman’s manual. There were no threats made. She was trying to sweeten the deal by offering the as reward. Immature? Yes. But she ultimately left him the choice of whether to show up or not on their wedding day. His decision in the end had nothing to do with the manual.

She’s actually very smart and capable it’s just not overt in the sword wielding way. Smart; when ErLang visited the brothel it was she who suggested bribery for the info he was looking for. Capable; taking charge of father-in-laws burial/mourning rituals and accepting the Imperial Edict about Baili’s family’s corruption charges. Saving ErLang's ass from her uncle when he trespassed at the Liu mansion. Don’t forget all the times she shielded ErLang when he behaved rudely in social settings. They’re all shown in subtle ways but if you skip her scenes then I can’t help you.

The clinginess. Her motivations for it and her rashly ruining ErLang’s plans all stem from her insecurity in her marriage. She knows he didn’t want to marry so that’s why she was so desperate to prove to him that she was useful to him and marrying her was not a mistake. Once she had assurance of his love, she calmed down and settled into the happy wifey role. We might not like how clingy or annoying it was, but her motivations were very in character. I think it’s unfair to expect her to be a perfect character right from the onset while others are allowed to grow throughout the series.

ErLang is not innocent in all this. Yes he was forced into marriage but he could’ve been kinder to her in the early days instead of just straight up ignoring her. It’s not like they were strangers, they’ve known each other since childhood so to straight up ignore her was downright mean. He said himself his issue with the arranged marriage had nothing to do with her, it was his lack of choice in the matter he takes issue with. Considering his position in life, him getting away with not marrying was very unlikely. Arranged marriages at the time of his social class is the norm. So while he is not obligated to love her, he could’ve at least been cordial to her so their potential loveless marriage would at be least bearable. In fact, if he had acknowledged her from the beginning, she would've never interfered with his investigations for his attentions but then they wouldn't be where they are now emotionally. It would indeed remain a loveless marriage.

Lastly, I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to be JUST a good wife nor do I look down on her character for that. Women of all types exists in the world. Not everyone is a Wu Siyu who eschews the traditional female role. Some women are happy to inhabit that traditional female role. I don’t like it when people (especially other women) turn their noses up at these traditional female roles. It’s sexist tbh, the same as working women today thinking lesser of the stay at home wife/moms.

Who said you are not allowed to dislike her? Plenty of people on this comment section don't like her. But it's…
Why would I talk to you when your hatred was so prominent? I deal with toxic people by staying the f away from them... which I will now heed my own advice.

Saw in the comments section that apparently you are not allowed to not like a character, but you must love them…
Who said you are not allowed to dislike her? Plenty of people on this comment section don't like her. But it's very clear other people can just fast forward her scenes and ignore her. You on the other hand, only comment to shit on her. THAT is why you are toxic. I guess character growth is not a thing for you huh? How far has she come since episode 2 until now at 36?

Liu ran my cute pure baby that the comment section does not deserve 🥺🥺
This comment section has been infested with Yibo’s most toxic shippers. You can smell which ship from a mile away.

I’m not talking about just the people who don’t like her character, there are those here who goes beyond disliking her and are wishing for her death.

You can FF her if you like it won't change anything.
Except she indirectly helped ErLang figure things out several times. The romance is really not that prominent… and it’s not even stupid “oops I tripped and fell onto your lips” romance. It facilitates character growth for both of them.

We’ve got a few of them right here in this comment section being unusually cruel to Liu Ran. I’m not talking the about people who don’t like her, but the people who are calling for her to be killed off… they are so transparent 🙄

I’m not sure if you are being sarcastic or not with your question of who he is being shipped with… if you’ve watch TU then you know who the other half of the ship is.

They keep popping up like cockroaches b/c they twist everything Yibo does to be about their ship. My boy can’t even release a song about the hardships he went through in 2021 without those shippers turning it into about the other guy. There is so much brainwashing on new fans who discover The Untamed. I wish he never did that drama honestly. It boosted his heat but we now know he was casted in Legend of Fei, Luoyang and Being a Hero before The Untamed even aired… so that one role has brought him nothing but toxic shippers/antis.

I got SY confused with SQ for a sec there and was confused. Yeah I love SY too, I've been a fan of her acting since Brilliant Girls (terrible drama, terrible character but I STILL ended up liking her haha). I can imagine which shippers are sending her unfounded hate... those people are delusional and so toxic even towards Yibo.

She didn’t scam him into marriage. Was she immature to use that workman’s manual to entice him? Yes but she left the choice up to him and he made the choice in the end not b/c of the manual but for his father.

ErLang never held her uncle against Liu Ran. Even early on when he found out her uncle had something to do with his father’s death, he told Shen Fei that “Liu Ran and her uncle are separate people, don’t blame her for his actions”. He has never blame her for his father’s death.

I don’t know what episode you are up to but it’s very clear to me that ErLang loves Liu Ran. ErLang is not expressive so some big sweeping gestures to indicate his love is not coming. They’ve known each other since childhood so I don’t believe he’s indifferent to her. His issue with the marriage was his lack of choice in the matter, not that he didn’t want to marry her. And the storyline description from the production has always been marriage first then love.

Her previous actions were all spurred by her insecurity about her marriage. She knows well ErLang didn’t want to get marry and was desperate to prove herself useful to him. But now that she’s secure in ErLang’s love for her, she’s happy to settle into the traditional wifey she always wanted to be.

As there are already comments about this particular subject in this online discussion of the excellent drama Luoyang,…
Plus, I believe there’s even a special price for 1st time subscriptions. When I did it for LOF last year, the 1st month was free. Now I believe first month is $0.99??? Surely people can afford that? You only need 1 month to watch Luoyang, just cancel it before it renews!

They should not have push the GBZ & WSY romance... now all they do is weep and mope about each other. I have to skip their scenes whenever they're not in work mode.

I am operating under the impression that Prince Zhao died. Or something equally unpleasant happened to him. Otherwise why frame the conversation like that? And if it was something innocuous as an upgrade in title which would be recorded in official court records… why would it even be a mystery/secret?

We were talking about the possibility of Mr Chu being Prince Zhao. And yes DaLang faked his death but he also disappeared and wasn’t walking around Luoyang using another name. That was my point of why Mr. Chu can’t be Prince Zhao. From before your edited comment, even if he got a new name for exemplary service, all the nobles would be aware of his upgrade in status. It would be in the official record books.

Wouldn’t that be known though? Court people/nobles would know all of the risings/falls of each other. And WYJ clearly told ErLang that he died. I just don’t see how he can fake the death of a royal and still have that person walking around. 🤣

Oh you edited your comment so now my reply doesn’t make sense.

Prince Zhao has to be a peer since they got into school shenanigans. All of the people you listed are too old except for Mr Chu. But since he is actually a Prince himself, makes no sense that he was once another prince who is now dead.
